Car hire at Cancun Airport - Discovering Mexico

Located just 16 kilometres (10 miles) south of Cancun city centre, and even closer to many of the city's top hotels, Cancun Airport is the main gateway to the popular tourist region of Riviera Maya, an idyllic holiday destination situated on the Yucatan Peninsula. Mexico's second-busiest airport after Mexico City, and one of the largest in Latin America, it currently handles in excess of 25 million passenger movements every year, many of them during the high season.

Opened in March 1975, the airport serves more than 130 destinations with flights operated by over 50 different airlines. It connects with 30-plus countries in North, Central, South America and Europe, with several new routes under consideration. Recently remodelled and expanded, Cancun Airport ranks as one of the best air transportation hubs in the world and has a wide range of on-site facilities and amenities available in its four terminals.

A popular beach destination since the early 1970s, Cancun today excels with its rich mix of superb beaches, pristine bathing conditions, pleasant weather, quality restaurants and easy air access. The city appeals to a wide variety of travellers, particularly those who enjoy outdoor adventure, spa experiences, history, culture, shopping and fine dining. Golfers also have a choice of more than a dozen first-class golf courses located in Cancun's spectacular surroundings.

A car hire from Cancun Airport gives visitors the opportunity to go beyond the city and discover some of Mexico's top tourist sights, such as Chichen Itza, one of the world's most important archaeological sites, and the Coba Ruins not far from the town of Tulum. Many of Mexico's most stunning beaches are situated to the south of Cancun along a beautiful stretch of shoreline running all the way down to the border of Belize (most notably Playa del Carmen), the majority of which are best reached by car.

With two large passenger terminals currently in operation, it has been extensively remodelled and expanded in recent years to become the second most popular airport in the country after Mexico City.

The Terminal is mainly used for charter flights while Terminal 2 caters for the makority of the airport's domestic airlines, as well as some international flights to Central and South America, plus a few long-haul flights to Europe. Most US carriers as well as some Canadian and European carriers use Terminal 3 with Terminal 4 the regular hub for several major airlines, including Aeroméxico, Air France, Lufthansa, Air Transat, WestJet, Condor, Southwest Airlines, Air Europa, Frontier Airlines, Sun Country Airlines and JetBlue. In all the terminals passengers will find a good number of restaurants, ATMs, cafeterias, convenience stores, Duty-Free and bureaux de change.

    Airport Facilities

The facilities and services at Cancun Airport are extensive and wide-ranging, particularly in the Main terminal which is the international terminal. Passengers can expext to find everything they need, including banks, large Duty-free shops, convenience stores, a beauty parlour, VIP lounges, modern business centre, food court, a video arcade, tourist information booths, lockers, medical services, vending machines, public phones and money exchange stores. There's a good choice of well-known restaurants and bars, most notably Baskin Robbins, Burger King, Domino's Pizza, TGI Fridays. How to get to and from Cancun Airport

When you rent a car at Cancun Airport you'll find that one of the city's best features is its road and transport links, especially between the airport and the centre. Autobuses ADO provides transportation services from the Cancun Airport to Cancun Downtown (journey time: 35 minutes), Playa del Carmen, and Tulum Downtown. Please note that these buses do not stop at any of the hotels in the city centre, nor any other location other than the official ADO bus stations. Other transport options include authorised taxi cabs, sedans, SUVs and minivans (shared or private). Cancun is very easy to navigate from the airport, which is to the south of city centre. Downtown Cancun is situated in-between the stretch of land between the sea and the Nichupte lagoon where many of the most popular hotels, beaches and bars are located in a zone referred to as the Zona Hotelera.

    Parking Tips

Cancun is a major tourist destination with lots of attractions and leisure activities to offer, so after picking up your car hire at Cancun Airport the first thing you'll probably want to do is head into the city centre to find somewhere to park. Generally speaking, if you are visiting downtown Cancun then you won't have too much trouble finding an on-street parking space, but if you plan to visit the hotel area (Zona Hotelera), then you might find it more difficult to park. Nevertheless, a few free parking spaces can sometimes be found at Playa Ballenas and other key areas where it is free to park in the hotel zone, but you'll need time and patience to find a space. Cancun Airport is also a good option and has both short-stay and long-stay car parking options available in close proximity to the main terminal buildings.
