Car Hire at Marrakech Train Station - Exploring Morocco in Style

One of the city's most recognisable landmarks, Marrakech Train Station (Gare de Marrakech) is operated by ONFC (Office National des Chemins de Fer) and is a key component of the Moroccan state railway network. A striking reminder of the colonial era, it offers visitors a reliable, safe and comfortable environment in which to arrive at or depart from one of the country's most thriving tourist destinations.

Situated a short walk from Marrakech's famous medina and main square (Djemaa El Fna), the station serves regular daily routes direct from Casa-Voyageurs Train Station in Casablanca, as well as the main station in the northern city of Tangier. Gare de Marrakech is the southern end-point of the Moroccan railway system, although plans are in the pipeine to extend the line to Agadir on Morocco's west coast sometime in the future.

With its abundance of unique attractions and lively souks, Marrakech offers the modern visitor the ultimate travel adventure. First stop for most newcomers is Djemaa El Fna where much of the tourist activity takes place, especially in the evening when the city's best street entertainmers are in full swing. Another must is a stroll around the lush, subtropical Majorelle Gardens named after the renowned French patiner, Jacques Majorelle.

Picking up a car hire from Marrakech Train Station is one of the best ways to explore this fascinating city and its unique environs. Drivers visiting the area are quick to discover that the roads in Morocco (particularly in and around the Marrakech region) are generally quite well maintained and traffic-free outside the rush hour, which means that exploring the city and its environs by car is a surprisingly easy and enjoyable process.

With enough time available, you'll be able to head for the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n Tichka Pass, one of the world's most scenic routes and particularly exhilarating by car. From there you can visit the Gorge du Dadès, Todra Gorge and the historic town of Aït ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is considered to be a very rare example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture.

    Station facilities

Sporting an impressive glass-fronted façade with a stylish Art Deco architectural design, Marrakech Train Station is one of the most photographed buildings in the whole of the city. Its facilities are wide ranging and include a variety of shops, fashion boutiques, coffee shops and fast-food outlets, as well as an excellent restaurant on the second floor with a shaded sun terrace offering wonderful views over the nearby Theatre Royal and other parts of central Marrakech. Besides several cash machines doted around the station, there's a low-cost hotel (Ibis) located close by, along with a number of restaurants and handicraft stores.

How to get to and from Marrakech Train Station

Conveniently situated just to the west of the city centre, the station is very easy to reach either by car, train or local public transport. The distance from Marrakech Airport is only three kilometres, making it a quick and seamless transfer for travellers arriving to collect their car rental at Marrakech Train Station. Many visitors arrive by high-speed train from Casablanca, which is one of the fastest ways to travel between the two cities with a journey time of less than three hours. Being located near the medina and the Ville Nouvelle (New Town), the station is within a short walking distance of many of the most visited parts of Marrakech, as well as many of the popular hotels. There is a regular bus service into the city centre from the bus station next door and a taxi rank right outside the station.

    Parking tips

Travellers who rent a car at Marrakech Train Station rarely have a problem finding a safe place to park when exploring the city. There are ample on-street parking opportunities in and around the city centre, along with numerous car parks with round-the-clock security. If you park on the street, it's important to be aware that you'll have to pay the parking attendant who will help you park and watch your car whilst your away. If you’re planing to visit the Medina, a good choice is the car oark opposite Jemaa el Fna just behind the Koutoubia, which is reasonably priced and well patrolled. The city's shopping centres often have their own car park (sometimes underground), plus it’s also possible to park at Marrakech Airport, which uses a ticket system.
