A car hire from Oviedo Airport is by far the best way to explore the enchanting Asturias region of northern Spain. Famous for its Pre-Romanesque buildings, the old, pedestrianised centre of Oviedo is an UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts visitors from all over the world. The city is also on the Camino Primitivo, an ancient pilgrimage route which starts from Oviedo and finishes in Santiago de Compostela where Saint James is buried. Oviedo Airport is the main gateway to the Asturias, a land of river valleys, pretty fishing villages and lofty mountains where wild bears and rare Iberian wolves still roam. Culture lovers shouldn’t miss the world-famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, home to one of the world’s richest modern art collections. A car rental from Oviedo Airport from Auto Europe also provides good access to other prime locations in northern Spain, such as Galicia, the Basque region and magnificent Pyrenees mountains. The airport’s management company Aena offers free Wi-fi for passengers who register with the ‘Airport Free Wifi Aena’ network via e-mail, Facebook, Linkedin or as an Aena Club Client. After that, the log-in process is quick and gives passengers the option to access the Internet with multiple devices. Asturias Airport (OVD) is located 47 kilometres (29 miles) from Oviedo and is easily reachable by car via the A-66 and A-8 motorways. Journeys take around 30 minutes and the approach to the airport is facilitated by a convenient ring-road system.
Bus is the most cost-effective way of travelling between the airport and the centre of Oviedo. The bus stop is on the right (just past the taxi rank) as you exit the arrivals area and buses run every day from early morning until late at night, with journeys taking about 40 minutes in each direction. Taxis cost around €50-55 and take around 30 minutes; the airport’s taxi rank is located right outside the main door of the arrivals area. Oviedo’s coach station is conveniently located in the centre of town, right next to the railway station, and there are coach services to most towns in the Asturias region as well as most other parts of northern Spain. Madrid, Seville and Barcelona are well served from Oviedo coach station, while some international operators also link the city with Paris, Brussels and Geneva.
Oviedo is a walker’s city and best explored on foot, particularly the historic centre which is over a thousand years old with very narrow streets, which means that there’s limited space for parking. Nevertheless, there are plenty of car parks in close proximity to the city centre, most notably around the bus and railway stations. But be advised that in the summer months of July and August, the city is very busy with tourists both from Spain and abroad, so parking spaces are more in demand than during the quieter periods of spring and autumn. With on-site parking available, some centrally-located hotels such as the Hotel Nature Oviedo and Ayre Hotel Ramiro I remove the stress of visiting the city’s downtown areas.
