The airport was originally built as a base for fighter and reconnaissance aircraft during World War II and continued to serve the military until 1969. Since then it has operated as a general aviation facility and periodically hosted a series of civilian/military air shows and static displays before being upgraded and improved for commercial use. Today it is served by a growing number of local and international airlines, including Allegiant Airlines, Flair Airlines, Swoop Airlines, Sun Country Airlines and Surinam Airways with over 3 million passengers passing through its terminals every year.
