Station Information

Opened in 1871, Stockholm Central Train Station is a striking building in the heart of the city centre with many key architectural features, most notably its main departure hall which is refined both outside and in. Known locally as Stockholm Centralstation, it is the city's main hub of public transportation and caters for regular high-speed SJ trains, Intercity trains, Arlanda Express trains and others to link the Swedish capital with many international cities. To get to Stockholm by car is easy since the good connections to the motorways. The traffic situation is relatively good most of the time, but you can expect traffic jams during rush hour. With a car rental at Stockholm Central Train Station you can connect with long-distance trains, regional trains, local transport, long-distance buses and the Arlanda Airport Express. Many regional and national train lines stopping there also serve Stockholm Södra, Stockholm Odenplan, Flemingsberg or Älvsjö Station. Being so centrally located, it is also is directly connected with the famous Stockholm metro system (called the Tunnelbana) by an underground pedestrian passage. A busy taxi rank is located right outside the station and several bus services arrive and depart a few steps away. Travellers can take the Arlanda Express or SJ trains to reach Stockholm Airport (ARN) with a journey time of just 20 minutes. Another major plus for tourists is the fact that Stockholm's historic Old Town (Gamla Stan) is an easy 10-minute walk from Stockholm Central Train Station's main exit.

Parking tips

You'll find that there are plenty of good parking possibilities when you rent a car at Stockholm Central Train Station. You can park in the many multi-storey car parks located in and around the city centre, or look for designated on-street parking spaces. There are numerous car parks in the inner city, especially in the popular Norrmalm district. Some car parks charge on leaving, so have cards of enough cash ready to pay the machines before reaching the barrier. If you prefer to park in the street, and are able to find a spot, you will be charged by the hour (note that most of the parking meters accept regular credit cards like VISA and MasterCard. Don't forget to pay close attention to the street signs in order to be sure that you are actually allowed to park your car in that street. Another excellent option are the many Park-and-Ride facilities with over forty such facilities situated just beyond the inner city and close to public transport connections. Leaving your car at one of these will contribute to a better environment, plus it's cheaper and often a lot simpler than trying to find parking in the centre of Stockholm. It's worth remembering that to take advantage of the cheaper Park-and-Ride day rate, you must be parked between 5am and 9am. You should also bear in mind that there is a congestion charge on weekdays between 6.30am and 6.29pm where road-toll cameras register all the vehicles travelling in and out of the zone.
