    Airport Information

    Publicly owned by Hillsborough County Aviation Authority (HCAA), Tampa International Airport was called Drew Field Municipal Airport until 1952 when it was developed into major air transportation hub for the central Flirida area. Operating with three runways, Tampa International Airport covers an area of 3,300 acres (1,300 hectares) and lies at an elevation of 26 feet (7.9 metres) above sea level. It consists of a unique landside terminal surrounded by four airside satellites structures. Each Airside connects to the landside terminal through an elevated people mover (APM) known as a monorail.

    Where to pick up my car hire at Tampa Airport

    Picking up a car rental at Tampa Airport couldn't be easier thanks to the many improvements that have been carried out in recent years. Access to the on-site suppliers is by taking the SkyConnect train from the main terminal, many of whom now operate at the modern Rental Car Center which has space for over 5,000 vehicles. The new combined service and maintenance facility is located near the southern edge of the airport and is connected to the terminal via the SkyConnect service.

    Terminals

    Tampa International Airport's main terminal building comprises three levels. Level 1 is the baggage-claim area with a ground transportation information desk and some of the main rental car counters. Level 2 mostly caters for passenger ticketing and serves some of the larger airlines, such as Air Canada, British Airways, Delta and Lufthansa. Level 3 is the transfers’ area and provides access to all the gates of the airside satellites.

    Tampa International Airport offers a true taste of the Tampa Bay region with local favourites such as Columbia Café, Café by Mise en Place and Ulele, to name just a few. Other highlights for passengers include free Wi-fi in the main terminal and airside sections, specialised gift shops, a large Duty-free store, newsagents, fast-food outlets, smoking areas, banks, bureaux de change, ATMs, a good selection of cafés and bars and several charging booths for mobile devices. The airport also has a modern spa, chapel and a large conference and business centre is located at the nearby Marritt Hotel. Facilities for disabled travellers include dedicated toilets, lifts and ramps, as well as TTY/TDD telephones for hearing-impaired passengers.

    How to get to and from Tampa Airport

    Getting around with a car hire at Tampa Airport is quick and easy due to its close proximity to the city's Downtown district just five miles to the west. Access to and from the centre of Tampa couldn't be easier with Highway 60 passing the airport's entrance, after which it carries on across the bay to Clearwater. Interstate 275 branches off from Highway 60 at exit 39 and connects northwards to North Tampa and southwards to St Petersburg. Furthermore, a variety of ground transportation options makes it easy to access the city's surrounding areas from Tampa International Airport, with the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) and Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) bus-stop being located at the Rental Car Center. With a journey time of around 40 minutes, the number 30 bus runs to destinations in central Tampa every 30 minutes (its stop is located at the Red baggage-claim section), while the Greyhound bus terminal is located in Downtown Tampa on 610 Polk Street near the corner of Pierce Street and is accessible by bus from the airport. Taxis are also plentiful with Yellow Cab and United Cap being the two authorised companies operating at Tampa Airport, with average transfer times to the city centre around 20 minutes outside the rush-hour.

    Parking Tips

    There's a wide range of parking options (including valet) for visitors who rent a car at Tampa Airport, including short-term and long-term car parks loctaed close to the main terminal (note that pre-booking is generally not necessary as there are plenty of spaces available). You can park your car hire at one of the many car parks available throughout the city, with underground, overground or on-street parking options all available in the Downtown district of Tampa. In fact, there are more than 24,000 parking spaces in the centre, including thousands of spaces in conveniently-located car parks close to the many of the city's main tourist attractions, shopping centre, restaurants and night-life areas. Please note that most car parks or on-street parking spaces in the heart of the city centre will require some kind of payment, so please make sure you have plenty of change with you in case your plastic is rejected!
