Located in Tokyo's vibrant Ota district, Haneda Airport (also known as Tokyo International Airport) is the largest airport in Japan and one of the busiest in the whole of Asia. A primary hub for the country's two main carriers - Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) - it serves the majority of domestic routes to and from the city as well as a rapidly increasing number of international services. Situated just 14 kilometres south of Tokyo Train Station in the heart of the city centre, the airport currently handles around 85 million passenger movements a year to and from destinations all over the world.
A city of extreme contrasts, Tokyo is a one-stop shop for globe-hoppers looking for the ultimate dream-trip destination. It's the place that simply has it all, from ancient temples and world-class museums to scintillating neon-lit night-life and centuries-old street festivals. Set on a tranquil bay, this proud capital city ranks as one of the biggest and liveliest urban centres in the world, and travellers will need several days to see all its main sights, which include the stunning Imperial Palace, magnificent Meiji Shrine, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (don't miss!), Skytree, National Museum of Nature and Science and the Ginza shopping district.
The surrounding regions are also full of promise when it comes to exhilarating road-trips in and around the Japanese capital. With a car hire from Tokyo Haneda Airport you can enjoy all the city's top attractions before embarking on a relaxing drive along the Pacific coast, stopping for lunch in a charming Japanese seaside town like Atami en route. Having your own transport will also save you money and lots of time if you plan heading into the country's vast interior to visit some of the gems in Japan's glittering tourism crown, such as Nikkō National Park, the Tōshō-gū Temple and Tokyo Disneyland (with nearby Tokyo DisneySea an added option). But it's the chance to get up close to the majestic Mount Fuji that draws many of the city's annual visitors, which is an awesome sight and typically covered in snow for most of the year.

Inaugurated in 1931, Tokyo Haneda Airport has mostly been used for domestic flights for much of its existence, but that changed quite drastically with the opening of a brand-new purpose-built international terminal in 2010. HND is blessed with an exhaustive range of on-site passenger amenities and leisure facilities and its three domestic terminals cater for a succession of flights throughout the day and much of the night across Japan and the rest of the world.

Tokyo Haneda Airport currently has three large, modern terminal buildings - Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Until 2020, the first two were domestic and the third international, but Terminal 2 is now used for both. Terminals 1 and 2 are home to the two major Japanese carriers Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA). In addition to the international flights of some Japanese airlines (including ANA, JAL and Peach), Terminal 3 also hosts a number of large airlines from all around the world, including Air Canada, Air China, Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair and Korean Air.
HND is a world-class airport that's full of excellent restaurants, great shops and a whole host of useful services designed to make the life of its many passengers as pleasant as possible. For travellers with time on their hands, there’s a good mix of Japanese cuisine available, including tempura, sushi, tonkatsu, curry, green tea desserts and even some excellent Japanese-Italian food. Haneda Airport also excels in Duty-free shopping with everything from the very latest Apple devices to a rich selection of crafted products. It's a great place to pick up some stylish gifts for friends and family members back home, like some upmarket ceramics, precision-made porcelain and hand-made Japanese candles. Look out for the 24-hour on-site spa which has hot springs, saunas and a fine-dining area, as well as the popular observation deck for plane spotting and a fun-filled flight simulator experience.
HND is well situated for visitors looking to pick up their car rental at Haneda Airport and be on their way in just a few minutes. Located in the Ota district of downtown Tokyo, it is by far the most convenient option for travellers flying in and out of the Japanese capital. You can reach the airport by bus (it's about a 1-hour journey from Shibuya Train Station in the heart of the city centre), train (which takes just 15 minutes on a rapid Keikyu line train from Shinagawa Train Station) and the city's superb monorail service, with a journey time of 13 short minutes from Hamamatsucho Train Station). A number of courtesy buses also serve Haneda Airport from the city's main train stations and hotels dotted around the greater Tokyo area. Plans are in the pipeline for a new train line to connect Tokyo's main railway station with HND in less than 20 minutes.
Tokyo Haneda Airport has a total of five car parks, P1 to P5, with P1 and P2 serving Terminal 1, P3 nd P4 serving Terminal 2 and P5 serving Terminal 3. Parking your car rental in Tokyo presents more of a challenge because the Japanese capital is often awash with cars, especially during the morning and evening rush-hours! Most parking spaces in Tokyo can be found in traditional car parks spread across the inner city and the good news for travellers who rent a car at Tokyo Haneda Airport is that there are dozens of large ones located in and around the centre. Good parking options include Times Parking located at 4 Chome-5 Shibakoen in Minato City or Tokyo Public Yaesu Parking or 1 Chome-10-1 Kyobashi in Chuo City, the latter of which is open 24/7. Due to very high demand, Tokyo has introduced a number of innovative parking opportunities for locals and visitors alike, such as car parks where a steel plate flips up under the car to stop it from leaving until the parking is paid (monitored by security cameras).
