Known locally as Mazowiecki Port Lotniczy Warszawa-Modlin (WMI), Warsaw's Modlin Airport is located some 40 kilometres north of the Polish capital and caters for a large number of scheduled services around Europe, with the number of regular flights increasing sharply during the summer holiday season. Originally built for military purposes in 1937, it later became one of the first airports in central Europe to be specially adapted for the use of low-cost airlines and charter carriers.
In 2012 the airport was extensively remodelled as part of a plan to establish it as a complementary facility to Warsaw Chopin Airport. The main terminal was expanded to a total of 13,380 square-metres across two floors to accommodate some of the industry's largest low-cost carriers (most notably Ryanair and Buzz Air), with services from many of Europe's most important cities, including Glasgow, Belfast, Shannon, Dublin, Liverpool, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands and London.
Highlighted by its magnificent Royal Castle, Warsaw is bursting with tourist interest, particularly in and around its historic centre. Don't miss the Old Town Market Square, an area rich in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical buildings, while the Warsaw Rising Museum and the Museum of the History of Polish Jews portray in compelling detail the tragic story of Poland’s Jews during World War II.
With a car hire from Warsaw Modlin Airport is the best way to enjoy the best of this fascinating city and its environs. Evidence of the city's long history is everywhere, from the Old Town and all its architectural splendour in the centre of Warsaw to the abundance of medieval castles set amidst verdant forests in the heart of the country. Having your own transport will also provide you with the opportunity to go further and explore other cities, such as Lodz and Lublin not too far away.
