" As this was our first experience with Centauro, there are a couple of points worth mentioning: 1) There is no clear indication of where the transfer bus is located – so we decided to get a taxi as we were already late for the car pickup, which leads me to point 2 2) The Centauro office address on the car rental agreement is out of date, and they have left that office for over a year now. 3) When we arrived at Centauro, we were told there wasn't any cars available for the category we have purchased. So we have decided to wait, as they were offering a very low category car for us. Then the availability was just for an automatic car, which we declined. Then the car we were given had an accident in their car park and there weren't any cars available – which is the car reg we have the receipt for. We then asked what cars they had available to take straight away and they had a Renault Clio, which we decided to accept. I then asked what to do, since the category was below the one we had purchased on, and verbally they told us to return the car with half the deposit instead of full deposit. As we didn't have any written word on it, we returned the car with full deposit. 4) I have now received their final bill. They took 156€ initially for tolls and everything else, of which they only returned 38.58€ - they have charged us 17.42€ for excess amount (which is acceptable as this is for the tolls, via verde as they called it) and 100€ for deposit amount. Can someone please explain why I have been charged 100 € for deposit??? "

" I purchased an advertised 'airport car collection' which turned out to be a wait 40 minutes outside the airport, walking up and down a line of vans until the right one turned up, then fight for a seat as so many people waiting. Then a 10 minute drive to the actual collection point. So, not as advertised! Desk staff tried to upsell me twice and sell me extra insurance that I had already purchased via Auto Europe. Tried telling me it wasn't the same when it was. Told me there was no damage on the car - when I walked over to it there was damage on every panel and every wheel. I went back to ask why the paperwork said no damage and the rude staff just said take pictures, they didn't want to come and see. They put a £1200 hold on my credit card! The car was a 1.2 Corsa which was not suitable for the crazy hills in Madeira. More than once the three passengers had to get out the car and walk up hill as it wouldn't move in first gear with them in the car! When I returned the car they tried to make out I had damaged it and luckily I had taken pictures of the exact panel so thank god! You must take pictures!! Had to wait ages for the return drive back to the airport. "

" Great value for money and friendly service. Best experience I've had with car hire which made the experience as stress free as possible. Picked up what seemed to be a brand new car from Faro (full to full, though in our case it was 3/4 to 3/4 full which was clear from document provided at arrival). Transponder for motorway tolls was pre-fitted which made things a lot easier with receptionist explaining clearly how this worked. Small fee was very reasonable. Shuttle from airport was efficient and drop off on return and shuttle via minibus could not have been swifter with staff member greeting us at car lot, inspecting car and summarising final charges without our having to set foot back into reception. Final portion of deposit return took 10 days which wasn't clear upfront. But very friendly service. Map of local petrol stations would have been extra helpful and only other minor missing factor which prevented a full score of 10/10. "

" The booking process was quick and easy. I requested to pick the car up at the airport, however on arrival I found out I needed to get on a minibus to the office. I raised this as a complaint and I don't think it was particularly handled well. I was told that I had received an updated email however I did not receive it and the reply did not state when the update was sent. If I was being cynical I think this is what happens all the time and it is too late to do anything about it as you're already on holiday. I would certainly be reticent about using Autoeurope again, for fear of it happening again. "

Centauro efficiently arranged a tow and replacement car, but I was unable to refuel the tank. The replacement car had 75% of fuel so I took it back ten days later with 100% of fuel to more than make up for the fuel I had used with the original car, but I was still charged £107. I don't think that is fair or right. "

" I have already complained about the fact that my voucher clearly stated that the pick-up point was at arrivals. In fact it was at P4 some distance away. We had no telephone number on the voucher to call so it was some hours later we found the transfer point. This was after 10pm when we were already tired and having to drive to the hotel. " My flight was cancelled due to the ATC issues resulting in us booking onto a flight a day later. I spoke with Auto Europe customer service and explained the situation. The representative said they'd send a message to Centauro and ask if I can pick the car up a day later, saying that this should be resolved quickly. I arrived at Centauro 24 hours after initial pick up time/date and they hadn't received any message from auto Europe and they had released my car due to no show. They said that if you would have contacted them (as I was told that was happening) they would have held onto my car rental. I have lost the ~ £141 initial booking and then had to pay ~€448 to Centauro for another car rental booking upon arrival. Absolutely appalled at the customer service by auto Europe, if you had contacted Centauro as stated I wouldn't be £400 out of pocket! I would like this resolved. "

They're NOT (see above for problems) it's only when your print the voucher that you find this out, so that's a misrepresantation at time of booking. Won't be using Auto Europe again, couldn't recommend either unless I get my 114 euro "fuel deposit" back which I wasn't told about when booking another misrepresentation. Pay a bit more and go direct, it'll cost the same in the end anyway ! "

Took me an hour to find their rep and had to wait 40 mins for the single 8 seater shuttle bus to work through a qeue of about 25 people. When we got to the office we waited another hour to be processed. The car was not inspected by Centauro so we were told to take a video/photos of any damage which took another 15 mins, pleased I did. I didnt get a contract at the time because it was emailed to me (took about an hour to arrive). I been charged 114 euros out of an extra 181 Euros fuel "deposit" at the time of the hire not told about when we did the booking. Have taken this up with Auto Europe. "

They also charged me for petrol event though it was returned half full as instructed. The car itself was excellent and after we dropped the car back the transfer was only about 5 minutes. " The service was very inefficient. There were no signs at the airport or instructions to find the minibus. It said there was an office at the airport and there is not. The counter staff were very slow which meant we were waiting a long time to get served. 200 Euros was taken from my credit card for their use in case I did not pay for fuel and tolls. I paid all tolls as I used the car and the car was only 3/4s full of fuel when I collected it (I took a picture) and I filled it more when I returned it (I took a picture). To date this has not been returned in full to my card. I am going to follow up once and then look to main a small courts claim from Autoeurope group. IN the past car hire companies have put a block on the amount required however this company actually takes the money. I will be writing other reviews telling people not to use Autoeurope. "

Pay 18.65 for a toll activation - as well as the toll itself - total scam. The car was good, the drop-off was easy - though final cost was exorbitant - and feels like we were scammed. "

" Overall, extremely disappointing. I had click the filter for 'on airport sites only' but still ended up having to use a shuttle bus. On collection, the car was in a dreadful condition, there were the usual attempts of cohesion in paying for numerous (unwanted) extras, inaccurate details of existing damage to the vehicle, mercenary and unprofessional customer service, and attempts to blame damage causation on the driver thus pocket the £1200 excess insurance charge. Would definitely not recommend. There are plenty of other choices at the airport. Will be replicating these views on all relevant social media and reviewing sites including Trustpilot. "

" First thing was the shuttle bus driver on the way to their depot drove very dangerously and was clearly breaking the speed limits. When picking up the car in the dark was told there was no damages or marks. But on inspection with my phone torch discovered that the whole side of the car was marked and had dents and scratches. Had trouble finding the staff as they had relocated to a room round the back. The car was then re inspected and all the marks identified. The passenger seat was stained and the car smelled of cigarette smoke. On reflection I should have asked for another vehicle. "

" I have never had aproblem hiring a car in over 40 years of hiring until now. I was shown a plan of all of the damage marks to the car when I picked it up showing at least 14 scrapes one being a serious attempt to break into the drivers door. \i was aske by the in a jovial manner by the lady if I wanted to take photos of the damage, i did not see a real problem so I said no as there were so many to photograph. I was met by a man when I returned the vehicle who asked whether I had taken photos and when i said no his face lit up and he made a cursory look at the driver's side and then went straight to the passengers side bottom of the front bumper and took a photo and showed me a "new" scrape on the bumper. He also showed me an undated photo purported to be taken before I hired it showing other scrapes but not the "new" one. I said that it could not have been us as a) the scrape was slight but you would have noticed coming into contact with anything and b) we had only used it briefly to go round the island and the rest of the time it had stayed in the hotel garage. He then said it would cost 220 euros to repair, this really set me off because there were so many scrapes on this bumper if he asked that off each hirer it would have contributed substantially to respraying the whole car. I then made it my point to warn other people hiring there that they needed to make entirely sure the condition of their vehicle before leaving the premises, this drew some very evil looks from the staff. We ha d alift back with another couple to the airport and they complained about thir mistreatment by Centauro. I have mentionend my disatisfaction in my survey back to Centauro. I am not sure who is benefitting from this scam or whether the Company know about it. I have had it deducted from my bond and do not know how to get recompense from Centauro. I have no problem with Auto Europe who I have always found helpful. "

" The worst experience ever, waited at the airport for over an hour for pick and when we finally got to their office it was total chaos, people waiting for hours to pick up their cars, we were to be picked up at the airport at 11:00 AM and at 2:00 PM we were still waiting for our car, after complaining several times and being told that we had to wait our turn we were put ahead of the line very hush hush and much to other customers dismay and dirty looks. It was very uncomfortable and irritating after a long flight and paying car insurance to your company and then having to buy more insurance from them or put a hold on our credit card of over 1200 Euros. At the end we feel that we overpaid for everything and received the worst service possible. This is no way to run a business, this is the sencond time which we used Centaura in 2 years and both occassions were a nightmare. "

Unfortunately our experience in Portugal with the car rental company Centauro was not so good, which is not the fault of Auto Europe. We would book with Auto Europe again but would not choose a car from Centauro. "

I was asked to check the car for dents etc but it was dark outside. There was no introduction to the car and there was no handbook in the car, The washer bottle was completely empty. The low tyre pressure light can but all the pressures were correct. Good handover at the end but there was only two, out of four, vans running. No queuing system for people wanting a transfer to the airport. Our van had a faulty rear wheel bearing. I told the drive who inform me it had been reported but nothing has been do about it. "

Insurance should be explained in more detail to the customer and told that Centauro will also insist on their smart insurance @ €264 or make you leave a €1200 deposit in case of damage. Some people have already planned their holiday finances and simply can not afford the additional cost. It should be one insurance payment at time of booking and that should be it. "

Getting to the car hire shuttle through the airport was difficult to establish where the waiting area was - the shuttles seemed too small for the volume of people needing to be transported and then on arrival at the offices there was a horrendous delay in hiring the car - no seating was available- no refreshments offered and no explanation as to how long the wait would be (over 2 hours in my case). There appeared to be a lack of staff provision for the volume of people. Then on drop off - no one to accept the car readily available thus making the return quite tricky in terms of the time looking for someone to check the car and hand in the keys. "

When we did get the car it was inadequate for 4 adults ,2 children and the luggage . There was nothing larger available so 2 of our party had to take an uber. Only 3 staff were on duty checking the documentation, and there was another member of staff that potentially could have assisted but seemed to be sitting a desk that had no 'Priority customers', perhaps they should have stepped in which would have reduced the line itself. It was more efficient the previous year, perhaps just bad luck and timings this year!! "
" The pick bus from Faro Airport Car Park 4 as rather long time arriving, and nobody seemed to know anything at Car Park 4 about Centauro and the their timings of the bus. Its only because we had used Centauro previously that we knew the process at Car Park 4. Arrived at the Centauro car hire office to be met with a large line of customers who were hiring vehicles which took over 1 hour to clear which was frustrating. Upon being given my vehicle no, then only to be told that it would be delayed as the allocated vehicle was not available as it was to be valeted, another 20/30 mins. I found the vehicle in the lineup awaiting the valeting and it was no 5 to be done. l found a member of the team and they secured another vehicle, as this was nearing the end of the valeting process. Then as a result the paperwork had to be adjusted as the vehicle no had changed along with the fuel tank capacity etc, which to be fair was done quickly. The car itself was fine and the return process was relatively quick although somewhat confusing as I had to go looking for the check in representative, when found this was done very quickly and very efficiently, "

" The transfer from Faro to the Centauro offices was a little manic due to the minibus only being able to carry 8 Pax and there were many more people than that waiting hence it was a bit of a bun fight with sharp elbows to get a place, then upon arrival at the collection point, there was a huge queue and it took over 2 hours for us to get our car. Despite having all our details already, we had to go thru the rigmarole of providing our details all over again. They had no idea that the gap insurance had already been paid as part of the contract and so we had to argue that we didn't need additional. There was no system of car logging so when we finally were given a car, we had to spend another 20 minutes trying to find it in the car park. It was chaotic , we had two elderly family members with us who were exhausted and when we finally got to our accommodation, 3 hours later than planned, there was no food available on site due to the lateness of the day. It was a really bad start to our holiday. On a positive note, the car was clean and comfortable and we had no mechanical problems and the drop off experience was much less painful, thank fully. "

We will not use this company again. We chose it because we were under the impression that because they were local they would be efficient, convenient, quick and cheaper. They were none of these. We chose them too as we thought they had a second office in central Lisbon as well as their ( very inconvenient) airport office. We hoped to drop the car off in the City to speed up the drop off but there was no central Lisbon office. "

Once there, we were given the hard sell, "scare tactics" for their extra €147 weekly insurance, including "if you scratch the car wider than 4cm diameter, that's €200, if your tyre runs flat, that's another €200, plus any damages to the wheel/car (apparently it had just happened to a German guy and his son and "they arrived as friends and left as enemies" according to the agent who served us - that's really professional of him to say that, I'm sure it's not the first time he's said it either!) A couple were checking in at the same time and got embroiled in the conversation with the agent serving us, that I just sat down, waited patiently and let them get on with it for 5 minutes, which again I thought was very unprofessional. They block €1050 off your credit card if you don't accept their extra insurance (as I didn't) and I honestly thought (and was scared) I wouldn't see most or all of that money again, but I returned the car the same as I had accepted it and they didn't charge me. They didn't have any of the Fiat 500 left, so we were given the Punto instead. It was newish and already had damage to the front and back bumpers, which was noted on the paperwork. By the way, they ask you to sign a contract in Portuguese only, which I'm not sure is legal. I was honestly just glad to get the car back and leave. Autoeurope also quoted me "collect and drop off with a full tank of fuel" which wasn't accurate at all and the agent poo-pooed it when I quoted him! The car had 20% fuel, we were charged €13 for that and had to return it with 20%, which we did and the money was refunded, minus credit card fees, as they didn't accept my cash! Although I paid only £49 for a week's car hire in Madeira, I would not recommend using the company, as it was too stressful and unprofessional. In fact, it dawned on me I'd used them 4-5 years ago in Alicante and had exactly the same, unpleasant experience, but unfortunately I'd forgotten about it. Sorry Centauro but I can't see you getting repeat business, if this is how hostile you are to your clients, can you? "

" Staff did not come out and show you the car, you got a form at the desk to sign, not detailing car condition etc. You pay a fuel deposit at the desk and if you don't fill it up you get back the difference on fuel level on your deposit. The car was not in best condition, it had dents and scratches all around and the gear stick cover was ripped out. The OSF tyre was badly worn, down to 2mm, which is not best when driving in wet conditions. Other than these issues the car driving experience was ok, rented for a week and had no issues and hire price was very good, so over all you get what you pay for. "

" 1 - The car I have specifically chosen was not available at the pick up. They have provided a car of the same group with a smaller boot space which wasn't ideal as I had large baby items to carry. 2 - Before going for the long trip across the country I had to request for an upgrade to be able to fit it all. They nicely offered a 6 groups up upgrade for the price of two upgrades. However, I still have been charged the full upgrade price. Also found out that upgrades can only cover the number of days of the original request and not from the date the upgrade was requested. At the drop-off, I asked for a explanation of the higher than expected value on the contract, the staff wasn't sure why. After around 30 min they finally made sense of it and informed me that there was a mistake at their end and I have been overcharged. They gave me an email to complain and request a refund. However, I'm still awaiting for an acknowledgement since my email on the 4th of September. 3 - After the upgrade, I also had to request a GPS SAT NAV since this car did not have it included. Again requested it on the 1st of September and handed over on the 3rd. Had to pay 72€ for it (8 days). The cheapest car is around 7.92€ per day. I believe that charging 9€ per day for a SAT NAV is over pricing. 4 - The cars had exterior marks larger than the accepted size which were not specified in the contract. Luckily I checked and they promptly manually marked it in the contract to avoid issues during the drop-off "

" There was no obvious place to meet the Centauro staff at the terminal building. In fact I spent 15 minutes trying to find the person with the clipboard to direct me to the shuttle bus. When I arrived at the Centauro building, I only had 8 families in front of me but because they are so inefficient, I waited for 1 and a half hours before I got to the front of the queue. This meant that I didn't leave there until nearly 22:00 and was late for check in at my accomodation. When I drove the car the following morning, the tire pressure light came on. I drove back to the Centauro building as no one was answering the telephones. They looked at the car and told me it was just a dashboard malfunction and that the tire pressures were probably fine but they couldn't check the pressures there and would not give me a different car. They managed to remove the light but it came back on when I used the car again. The queue that day was significantly longer than the previous night but because I already had a car, I took priority. The employee that came to look at my car said that people can wait up to 5 hours to collect their hire car. There were elderly people and families with small children and hardly anywhere for people to sit down - I find this totally unacceptable. The drop off was seamless in comparison with the rest of my experience. "

" The whole experience with Centauro was unpleasant, to say the least. The shuttle pick up from the airport to the car rental was not efficient. The shuttle service they provided was simply to small to deal with all the people who arrived at the airport. After waiting for more than an our, I decided to take a taxi (and pay MYSELF) to finally be able to pick up the car. Centauro did also not pick up there phone at the car rental, which made it impossible to get in contact with them. After arriving at the car rental, the problems continued: Long queue causing long waiting times, rude stuff and various extra costs. We also received the car with 60% of petrol which is really unprofessional as it is difficult to return it with exactly 60% again. All in all, it was a very unpleasant experience and I would NEVER recommend this car rental to anybody else. It totally ruins the start of your holidays! "

" Frankly the experience is awful. Firstly the rental place is nowhere need the aiport. We had to wait over an hour fpor a shuttle bus to get there. When we arrived, we had to wait over an hour to get seen by counter staff as it was so busy. When I was finally seen, the bookign was quite fast, however, I had paid for insurance with Auto Europe booking. Ce nturo told me this wasnt with them and I had to pay an additioanl €158 for insurance with them. The car was not what I selected and although in mint condition, it was had no power at all and was a pain to drive. In addition the drop off again we had to wait for ages to be seen just to drop off the vehicle. I wont be using you or Centuro agian "

" This is the subject of a complaint involving car not properly serviced and charges to tow it in. The car should have had as blue but did not and after about 40 Kim's the management system shut down and had to be towed on and I was charged for that rude staff On our return we encountered a pot service and bad mannered awkward staff particularly a man called nelson Milton who appeared to be under the influence of drink or other substance and stood by the car for over 10 minutes tecting and would not check it in making us late for our flight possibly the worst experience I have had "

" Our car hire was booked through Auto- Europe who in turn offered Centauro as the hire company. Having paid Auto - Europe the quoted amount which we were led to believe included all insurance cover. Upon arrival at our destination Centauro required another £ 69.24 for so called insurance cover. Please be aware of these underhand practices. "
