I have rented many cars on this basis but I was told that the car could not be rented to me because I don't have a "new" style license. Only after some lengthy and difficult exchanges was I allowed to take the car if I signed a waver to say I'd be responsible for all financial consequences of being stopped by the police and the car being impounded for up to 3 months!!! I can find no reference in the t&c's for AE or Dollar to say my style of license isn't acceptable. "

The supplementary insurance is goof value (comparade to the rates charged by the hiring firms) and on the one occassional I have to use the cover the application process was straightforward. "

As I had paid for the car I was completed confused as to where the difficulty sat as she had her license and i was there with the credit card that booked the rental. The staff were completely indifferent to our situation. I then contacted your out of hours office team and was given the same statement. So now I am out of pocket the original rental the 200 euro taxi ride to my destination and the additional 300 euro for the new car rental. Abysmal client service and dented our entire holiday "

Child car-seat: we needed a child car-seat but could not pre-book this online so we put in a request. At the pick-up we were told that this would cost €125 for the duration of the rental! If we had known how expensive this would be we would have gone to a shop and bought a car seat for less than the rental cost. Dollar should have made their pricing transparent to us at the point of booking. Lying about the insurance: when I picked up the vehicle the counter staff told me that I did not have insurance. This is a lie that I believe they tell to upsell optional insurance cover to customers. My rental contract includes basic insurance cover that I was happy with. " Before committing to renting a car via AutoEurope I called and specifically asked if my UK paper license was valid for Italy. The agent checked AND CONFIRMED that my UK paper license was valid. On that basis alone I proceeded to book the car with your good selves. Upon arrival at Catania airport I checked in for the car rental only to be told that my paper license wasn't acceptable/valid for the car rental. We called AutoEurope in the UK and agent stated that my paper license was indeed NOT VALID for the car rental, contrary to what I'd been previously advised by AutoEurope pre rental. Further to this the agent stated that since I hadn't taken out a cancellation policy with AutoEurope they would not be able to help me further with any other car rental options and that the money I paid for my car rental would be lost and I wouldn't be able to claim any monies back. I was left high and dry by AutoEurope, in Italy at the start of my holiday without a car rental. I feel strongly let down by AutoEurope. I know calls are recorded and I'm sure you can pinpoint my conversation with the agent who clearly stated that my paper driving license would be valid for my car rental in Italy. To help you trace that call, I called yourselves within the hour prior to booking the car rental online. I await, with interest, your considered response on this matter by return. " We flew into one terminal, no-one at Dollar desk , person on Hertz desk says car at other terminal, bus every 20 minutes. Offered us a special deal of an upgrade, for approx €230 which I reluctantly took rather than journey to other terminal, but the car , a DR, was very disappointing, hopelessly under-powered and certainly did not feel like an upgrade. Because it ran GPL, she said cost only 15c per litre, so we would save on fuel, however actual cost around 80c per litre, and not as efficient as petrol, only around 25 MPG, so no saving at all. "

" Upon receiving the car in Bologna I noticed the warning light for air tyre pressure was on. I went back to reception and explained to them there was a problem with the back passenger seat tyre. An employee put some air in the tyre. During the course of the next two day's driving I had to get air at the service stations 3 times. The air pressure dropped from 2.9 to 1.3 fairly quickly. This in my opinion was very dangerous and time consuming. They should have changed the vehicle at Bologna wen I indicated there was a problem with the air pressure on the rear passenger tyre. "

" I'm afraid that I was deeply disappointed by the whole experience for the reasons stated above. "
" We feel extremely disappointed and frankly cheated by Dollar, who took every opportunity to add spurious costs onto our booking. The first problem was that I was automatically registered as the driver just because I had made the booking - although I had never stated that I would be the driver, and indeed, have never driven an automatic car. But I was not allowed to put my husband on as the driver instead, so we had to add him as the additional driver at a substantial extra daily cost. Then, although we filled up before returning the car, the indicator was just off the full, so we were charged not only 30 euros penalty - apparently the cost of taking the car to a petrol station, which I was happy to accept - but also the extra cost of a whole fuel tank, at 70 euros, which is frankly dishonest when about 5 euros more fuel was all that would have been needed. As a result, what looked like a good value rental turned out to be outrageously expensive. We will not only never use Dollar again but we will also make sure that others are aware of our experience. "

" The fuel reading on pick up was 8/8, however I had only travelled some 5 kms when it dropped to 7/8. Mid hire I filled up and managed to do 100kms before it dropped to 7/8. This was about 13Euros worth of fuel. it seems suspicious that a previous renter would have been able to judge filling just enough to fill to 8/8, it is entirly possible that fuel was removed and then topped up to just 8/8? "

" We had to change our flights due to covid cancellations. On ringing auto Europe to advise them of this I was told that there would be another £1300 approx to pay? because the pickup was over 2hrs later that day. I was transferred to Dollar to discuss this but after several attempts to contact them with no answer autoeurope gave me a direct number. This number was not answered at all! On calling auto Europe back I was informed that during the summer months dollar was only open until midday. I tried contacting them over the next couple of days with no success. We therefore rearranged our flights to fly out a day earlier at extra cost just so that we could pick our car hire up on time as prearranged and not lose our booking. I then received a call from dollar 1 week prior to our holiday checking if we still needed the car because they were having difficulties and if we were not sure what time we were picking the car up it would be cancelled. I categorically insisted we would be picking the car up. On arrival at the car hire approx 1 hour prior to our allocated time of collection at the airport the office was closed. We also were not advised that dollar, Hertz and Firefly share the same office and had spent over 45 mins looking for the dollar office which in fact was Hertz office. We were eventually sorted out with our car at 5pm where someone came to open the office for us. The car was scratched but in a reasonable condition and the lady was very helpful. All in all I will stay clear of auto Europe and Dollar as no one seemed to have a clue what was going on and also the lack of information passed to us was shoddy. Also contact with companies unreliable. "

" This car rental could have gone very wrong for us, because the vehicle had not been correctly prepared for rental. Also the original vehicle offered might have been in a similar class as I had booked but it was much smaller than needed. When you are accompanied by a child your not really in a position to argue with the receptionist at collection. Very disappointed by this experience. "

She didnt explain that was PER DAY, so in total was more expensive than the actual hiring of the car for 4 days, and then was not happy when I asked to have the added insurance removed. On return of the car, I had to pay £54. I was quoted £30 for adding my husband as a driver on collection, but when I dropped car off, I was charged £54, and nobody could explain why. However i rent every year at least once in Catania and i have never experienced such a wait. a couple of points: 1. There was no differentiation between the que for pre-booked and walk ins therefore i was waiting for people to negotiate cars and prices etc. which takes a lot longer than a straight pick up. I suggest Hertz/Dollar split out pre-booked and walk ins to speed things up. 2. After my 2 hour wait i was given my rental document and told to go to the outside desk, skip the que and ask for my car key. Upon going outside i walked past another long Que to find 2 staff busy with clients. When they finished (after waiting approx. 35mins) i asked a girl for the car key, she told me "the car was not available and that there was nothing she could do and that I should go back inside" her attitude was absolutely shocking didn't seem to care a customer had been waiting over 2 hours and essentially ignored any further questions from me. I went back inside and let the agent know, they could not understand this and told me the car was there and i should go back outside and ask for Martina. Again, I was met with disinterested staff, who seemed to be doing their best to actually avoid helping anyone. I actually had to announce in a raised voice, who is Martina to actually get attention. Low and behold it was the same girl who had 10mins earlier told me the car was not there. I am not sure what her problem was and why she couldn't give me the key the first time, however this should be investigated. As she was rude and unhelpful and had a customer running back and forth across an airport. i.e why could she not have called the desk inside to find my car???? In the end we landed at 1530 and didn't receive the car until 1900. We were 3 hours late arriving at our accommodation which inconvenienced both us and the gentlemen organising our apartment. please note: i used Catania every year and have never had such a hassle, general dollar or Hertz. " we had to go to the Hertz counter and it took nearly an hour and a half to get to the counter to be served. this is not the first time I have experienced long delay at Hertz, some years ago I experienced over 2 hours at Nice. I would therefore avoid using Hertz and partner companies again. once at the counter it only took us 5 minutes or so to complete the transaction but other people seemed to be their for around 30 minutes with the member of staff which I don't know why. this spoiled the whole experience for us. " A long queue at the pick up desk, only one person on duty. But I was plucked from the queue by a Hertz rep, who said Dollar was a subsidiary of Hertz, and she would process my booking. The car had under-inflated tyres, and when cornering, the front spotlights came on, and then went off when straightening. The brakes squealed when applied in reverse. Also, never been asked to provide proof of re-fuelling before, in many years of car hire in Italy. But the drop off was good. "

" When we picked up the vehicle we had to ensure that they wrote 2 large and obvious marks onto the form - otherwise they would have just left them and tried to charge us for them! One very small mark which was on there at pick up we did not notice (they should also be checking!!!) and we were charged for it on return. We did not make the mark and the counter staff were incredibly rude, insisting we must have. We understood because we didn't mark it on the form that we must have made the mark saying we did it and didnt realise it even when we explained we barely used the car and absolutely did not scratch it. We spent ages waiting around for them to charge us for it, obviously they were playing on the fact that we didnt have time to argue as we had a plane to catch. Terrible and rude service, would not use them again and given we own a house just outside Pisa they are missing out on what could have been a lot of repeat business, for the sake of conning us out of over £100 for a scratch they should have noticed before we took over the vehicle. " When I picked up the vehicle there was damage to the car, this was not a problem as the damage was indicated on the paperwork. When I arrived at my destination it was clear that the cars locking device did not work. Due to this I returned the car the next morning and was given another vehicle in exchange, I was told when I asked that there would be no charges made due to the condition of the first vehicle. I have noticed today the car rental company have charged to my credit card £9.37 which I think must be for the fuel I used in returning the car for a journey I should not have had to make in the first place. " I am in the process of making a formal complaint - and indeed I would wish for this to be picked by AutoEurope and for you to intervene and to act on my behalf to recoup the monies that were wrongly taken from my credit card. I was wrongly charged for Super Cover and Fuel; I was never asked about this and the charges were applied without any explanation or agreement. When I tried to complain the following day (via the Call Centre in Milan and direct to the office in Naples) I was told I'd have to take forward the complaint when I returned the car. When I returned the car, I was told it was too late. The charges have now been debited from my credit card. I am extremely unhappy about this. I feel your rental supplier has let you down. Your records will show that I regularly hire cars in Italy, so I am entirely comfortable with the hire process and the need, if asked, to refuse the Super Cover. I am left with the impression that this was an attempt to 'con a tourist' to boost commission. I would wish for you to investigate and respond to me. "
