My AMEX was continuaslly declined and I had to callk them. Eventually the staff advised that just today AMEX was not accepted. Another work around was provided but after a wait of over an hour which left me totally drained by the whole experience. The guy then wrote down my email incorrectly and the confirmation of my rental never arrived ecen though my initial reservation went thru. When he couldn't have picked it up from the syatem is beyond underatanding. Totally unprofessional serivce. I was then in the rush hopur traffic so took me over 2 hours to get home. Public transport would have been far quicker "

" Nothing showed all additional local charges (eg Glas&Tyres) so thought included with Zero Excess. Only saw possible £103 claim fee on voucher (nothing before booking. Seems Hertz etc can do as they wish "

This was not expected and on their voucher this was not even mentioned on their "locally available options (drivers, seats etc)" Additionally, although £0 excess there could have been an admin charge of £103 in event of a claim (not exactly £0 if claim!) On pickup, fuel dropped to 7/8 from full within 10km. When I filled up I drove 95km before this happened, so could not have been anywhere near full. Will not rent from Dollar/Hertz/Thrifty in the future "

A week later found in my email junk a pre-collection report from the rental company (who are part of Hertz) and photos of various angles of the car and comments "no damage". You could clearly see that the light reflections showed some damage - emailed Hertz customer service and pointed this out and made comment that I felt thus was a bit naughty - they acknowledged my email within 24hrs, and had to wait until we returned the car to see if there would be any action / claim on my booking - there wasn't. " My New Year's Eve evening flight was cancelled, while I was sitting on the plane. I called the two numbers for Dollar (Hertz) provided by Auto Europe to tell them to keep my car as I would be flying out the following morning on New Year's Day. The phone wasn't answered by Dollar or Auto Europe. On arriving at the Dollar desk on New Year's Day at about 2:00pm, I was told they didn't have a car for me, and that Auto Europe wasn't honouring my voucher as a I failed to turn up. At the same time they offered a Range Rover for an additional €500 Euros, which made no sense. When i asked for any car for just a day so I could to get my wife and I to our accommodation, they quoted me €211 Euros for 1 day car hire for their cheapest car. After some time spent trying t get help from them I eventually rented a car from Avis for 1 day for €23. I have paid £241.33 to Auto Europe and have been told that money is not able to be refunded. All i wanted was a car which I had paid for. I'm entirely understanding that especially during the New Year period availability can be tricky, but Auto Europe and Dollar (Hertz) did nothing to help me. This is rather upsetting considering the amount of car rentals I have made via Auto Europe (easily over 20 separate bookings). I've had nothing but praise for them but this has upset me and left me not at all happy and £241.33 out of pocket. I also think that Dollar (Hertz) completely exploited the situation. I will be raising a dispute with Auto Europe. "

" on arrival we were told we had a limited mileage voucher, after finding the small print somewhere in the documents. We have hired cars through you before and never seen this. As we knew we would do more than the 600km allowed, we had no choice but to 'upgrade' at the counter to a car with unlimited mileage, at a cost of £243 euros. We were absolutely disgusted with this cost, but faced with either no car at all or paying for the upgrade we had no choice. The most frustrating part was that at the end of the hire period when we received our final invoice from Hertz, we noticed the excess mileage was only 30c per mile, and in reality if we had kept our oroginal car and just paid the excess mileage rate we would only have been charged about 60 euros. So overall we paid 180 euros more than we should have. We will simply never use Hertz or Autoeurope again after this. "

" The only car available at Faro airport was much smaller than the one we had booked but we were charged the same we could hardly fit our luggage in the boot . Because we were dropping off the car very early 7am no petrol stations were open although the tank was 3/4 full we were charged for a full tank instead of the amount to top it up. "

Arrived at check in and after short wait was encouraged to upgrade my car which would have made it twice as expensive. Told where the car was parked and left to my own devices. Considering that it was after 10.00pm and dark no one came with me to the car to explain where the light switches, windscreen wipers, and gears were. As I had told the receptionist that I drove an automatic car it was a good job that I had spent over 50 years in the Motor Trade otherwise I would have been in a lot of trouble. I feel that some one should always accompany you to the car and explain where everything is located. The receptionist only seemed interested in the customer upgrading your hire car. "

" I rented 4 cars over the summer and each rental went smoothly except for the last which was due to airport congestion and poor communication. "

" Please note the hire company I dealt with was Hertz. I took out an full to full fuel agreement. I covered just 234 kilometers during the hire period. I decided to refill with fuel as near to the Hertz depot in order to ensure I was complying with the requirements. I called at Propel fuel station just across the road from the Hertz depot only to be advised by the attendant that i was limited to 22 euros of petrol!. When returned to Hertz the fuel tank was said to be be 8.20 litre short of when I took the vehicle. (charged at 1.73 euro per litre. Propel was 1.49 euro per litre. total 14.24 euro) As i had failed to return the car with a full tank I was charged an admin charge of another 30 euros!!! I have no idea why Propel limit the amount of fuel that can be purchased, but given their close proximity to the car hire companies at Faro airport? Certainly for my part I had in good faith attempted to replace the fuel i had used, had i been able to I would have incurred an additional 12.25 euros for the 8.20 litre and not 44.24 euro Hertz have charged. "

When I got back they charged me for a full tank of petrol rather than the half tank I had used €67.55 for 196km driven and no time to go back an fill up. This is a new trick for Car Hire companies who I have learned from bitter experience are basically dishonest. My contract was full to full so I guess I have no argument, paying for the experience (literally). The one thing I didn't like is the insurance "top up" (this isn't just with Dollar) but I always like to upgrade when booking my car online to full insurance that covers wheels, tyres etc but then get told by the local agent that this insurance is inferior and that I should take out their own. " I can thoroughly recommend the Auto Europe base as very handy compared to all local providers, other than the nationals , etc. Staff polite and well trained. Cost per vehicle must be thoroughly checked, as luckily we hold a UK excess insurance policy, as non- comprehensive policy on offer as standard, unless premium paid. Always read what's offered in that regard "

" i had to wait for over an hour to get the car as only two counter staff were on duty when i got to the car it was one group below that which i had booked but there was so little difference in price it was not too important and i thought it would probably take another hour to change it. the car was covered in light scratches and I had to send for someone to make a note of this so I would not be blamed on return. the operator made a note of all the damage on his tablet and sent me a copy by e-mail. the return was very swift hence a good mark "

I tried ringing the roadside assistance but didn't know that the number needed a 1 infringement of it and I was cut off when I was put through to the Faro Office! I was nervous to drive the car too far afterwards in case there was a problem and Road side assistance was not easily available. I have booked again with Dollar and hope to have discussions about these things before I pick up the car. "

" We booked the hire car on the understanding from the web site that we had unlimited mileage as advertisd. we knew we were travelling a minimum of 600km. On returning the car we received a charge of £149 for excess mileage over 60km per day. This is unacceptable and we will be taking it further. The product information clearly states unlimited mileage. We will be going to Martin Lewis and any other media website to warn others of this miss-information. This ruined our holiday and was money we can ill afford. "
