Ended up wasting over an hour on our first evening emailing photos to Hertz to show all the damage. Why was the car presented in this manner and not repaired prior to being rented out? Arrangements in Santander to return the car were poor, had to queue at the main desk for 15 minutes to get somebody to come and look at the car, they were busy with clients wanting to collect their cars and there was no one specifically to deal with returning cars. Given all the damage on collection expected more support from them in speedily checking the car back in. Would have been very uncomfortable to have just left the keys given the condition of the car. Disappointing. "

I thought he was writing a novel. Also for constructive feedback his breath was a real issue and not pleasant in a customer facing role. The the vehicle was not ready. Only waited 15 minutes but on top of the time to get booked in 45 minutes passed. More time than we were in the airport. Then the car had dents and damage on most panels. Ask them to send you pictures! Finally would be helpful if the screen wash hadn't been empty. Never again would I book with you I'm afraid. You give the job to Dollar and they sub it to Hertz. There's no control and we have never given a negative review before but this was a terrible experience. "

But I took the £80 insurance cos last year when we booked with Auto Europe it took nearly two weeks for the £800 payment to be repaid on my credit card . When you are told it won't be taken off your card , just held . So I felt I had no choice but to pay their £80 insurance as I didn't need the worry of having to pay their insurance £800 before it was returned to me . So my advice is . If you're taking out a car hire don't do the insurance in this country cos it's just not worth it . "

Meaning that you ONLY have one other option to collect the car which is to BUY the extra insurance and pay with another card or cash etc @ €149.50 ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS BE VERY VERY AWARE It makes sense why it took so long in the queue to collect the car lots of people "struggling" to collect pre-paid cars ??!!??!? If you want extra confidence in what I am writing is true. Please visit wikivoyage.org (the travel advice website) which clearly states that the scam is commonplace with most of the rental companies in the Canaries "

The car we were given had lots of damage dints scratches scrapes ect thankfully I took at least 20 pictures of all the damage as anticipated maybe an attempt to try to blame us after we hadn't taken their add on. We were correct as on return the lady checking the car homed right in on the smallest of scratches.Thankfulky I had photos which clearly showed this scratch was there so was done before we took possession of the car. We felt that this was just an attempt to scam us and get us to pay for something we had nothing to do with on a car that already had damage. Awful and I feel sorry for others who may not have the evidence to prove their innocence, "

" Shocking hard sell tactics to take out extra insurance at Hertz desk. He said if I didn't take it we would have to wash the car before bringing it back. My wife was very upset. He said there are always extra marks on the car when it's brought back so very unlikely you would get your 820 euros deposit back but pay 162 up front and you don't have to wash it. I've hired cars in many countries over the years I'm 57 now and visit the island often. He even tried to say you have no insurance. I said you couldn't let me take tge car without it so he said OK you only have 3rd party insurance which is all I wanted. I'm back now but still angry as he obviously does it with everyone making lots more money at the customers expense "

On returning the car, however, although I was the only customer at the desk, I was disappointed when the staff member refused to check the car with me. She kept repeating that she could not until she phoned someone first. She said that would take up to 20 minutes and then she could confirm whether or not the car was OK and that the block was removed from my credit card. Anyway she said she would email me to update me. I had to go away but came back a couple of times between 20 & 30 minutes later but no one was at the desk. Then I had to go and catch my flight. I have still received no email from dollar. I was left anxious about the block on my credit card. But on checking my credit card account, it seems to be removed. I don't understand why - in this small airport with the car close by and no customers at the desk - this employee could not just step out and check the car; or at least keep her word to be back in 20 minutes or send an email. I was disappointed. "

As this occurred at 2350 on Sunday we had no alternative but to pay. The next day I attempted to contact Hertz by phone/online to cancel the insurance. It proved impossible to reach the airport office/Hertz Espana/Hertz Europe as their systems did not recognise the 'K' reservation number. Latterly I lodged a complaint via Resolver.co.uk. Hertz refused to deal with this until the rental was complete. On completion they replied that I used their insurance so we had to pay! If they do not accept to refund via the Resolver system it provides for a free of charge resolution under consumer law and/or the supplier's policies. Extremely poor customer service "

In this with case Dollar (Herz) I incurred two sets of foreign exchange admin charges of £20, one when the Euro Excess Cover Charge was converted to pounds and then back again into Euros. " Your instructions on finding dollar were not very good. We followed the instructions to the letter which led us to the external doors where many other pick ups were taking place. The dollar van flew by this area twice. On the third time around I stopped the van and was given directions. The pick up was actually in the bus station about 300 metres from where your directions ended. There was not an easy route to this without actually walking on the road. In the bus station dollar have an office at stance 6 and the minibus picked us up there. "

The brakes were not very good, the clutch did not bite until almost fully returned, the engine autostop tried to engage with clutch problem and stalling. The other car offered to me did not have a spare wheel, only a foam to inflate the tyre if a puncture occured. I have had this before and was left stranded in the middle of nowhere waiting for hours because the side wall was ripped out by a kerb when I was forced off the road by another car. At least the Hyundai had a spare wheel that could be fitted if required. "

Hertz/Thrifty processed the collection and refused to accept my credit card details insisting that I make alternative payment by debit card or cash £95 to avoid excess and liability. As I had already paid this online at time of my booking this was a complete rip off. Hertz staff upgraded the car without asking as they seemed to recognise my predicament. On return, Dollar again had no one available and Hertz staff sent me dashing across the airport to collect a bus which was not necessary as I eventually found the Hertz officer who could process the return. Having arrived with over an hour to spare this all took me until I had just 15 minutes left before I needed to be through the security check in I was exhausted stressed out and very unhappy. "

Telephoned the helpline who stated if I was to purchase the oil myself I would be reimbursed when I dropped the car off at the airport. On dropping the car off at Hertz I was met with am extremely unhelpful female member of staff who also very rude. No note had been placed on my file as the initial help desk had stated would - the female at the drop off point even suggested I pay for the oil myself. After some argument and huffing and puffing from the female she then agreed to refund the amount. I then had to queue at the Hertz helpdesk inside the airport for a further 20 minutes to obtain the refund. Obviously the cars are not serviced regularly and potential customers should be aware of the challenge ahead. Poor poor poor. "

" The Auto Europe bit was fine. You need to stress the issue with your additional insurance policy that you take out in the UK and how not to get pressured into taking additional insurance. You also need to highlight the fact that whilst you might book through AE and the car is via Dollar, the staff on the desk work across multiple providers and you might actually be given Hertz paperwork as we were. Totally confusing for customers, and possibly something that they rely on whilst informing you that your insurance through AE is not with them... and pushing additional unnecessary insurance on you. "
" The staff on the counter desk asked for additional payments for insurance and claimed that the cover that we too out with Auto Europe wasn't anything to do with them and implied that we needed additional insurance. My friends also booked the same car through the same company and they did the same to him (we stood next to each other at the same desk picking up our cars). My friend was offered another car at £120 extra payment and the staff suggested it was a better fuel efficiency. When he rejected it, he was offered the waived fee for the insurance if he paid the extra £120.... which he rejected. The Spanish staff really came across quite pushy. It was only due to the fact that my friend and I were there at the same time that they backed off. Would question their integrity if the payments were negotiable and unnecessary! Car was damaged (lightly) more than was declared on the paperwork so further fuelling suspicions that the staff operated in a questionable manner. "

Car collection was in a nice office with uncoordinated line - I had a bad experience personally on the return of my vehicle in the car park with a very rude male Dollar employee who was extremely blunt towards me. I was subsequently assisted by another male employee who screened and received the car. Inside the uncoordinated line of people waiting OMG to collect cars and those such as I who were returning cars were kept in the same line and it took almost 20 minutes to hand over an empty envelope with an "ok" comment to the lady assistant - very frustrating! "

" In April 2018 I booked the hire of a 9 seater vehicle online with Hertz, paying £531.30. This included basic insurance which I had decided was adequate for the purpose. On Tuesday 17th July at approximately 6pm we landed at Barcelona airport and went to collect the vehicle. The Hertz representative took my details and driving licence etc and in broken English said "insurance" to which I replied "Yes thanks, got it". He then completed some paperwork producing a card for me to sign, there was no explanation or dialogue at this point and I believed I was signing for the vehicle. There was no summary total and I have attached a copy of the document, which whilst in Spanish (which I am not fluent in) is also extremely diffciult to read. The representative then informed me the vehicle was on its way from terminal 1 and would be 15 minutes ...maximum. 45 minutes later I had to go back to the Hertz desk and enquire where the vehicle was as no-one at the kiosk desk could tell me....to be told it was in the parking lot somewhere. I went back to the kiosk desk and was told the vehicle was in lot 46, about 300m away. My family had been waiting outside the kiosk desk the entire time, yet no one informed us that the vehicle had arrived, or indeed where it was in the carpark. I was astounded, not only that I had to go and collect it when I had watched other customers either being taken to their vehicle or have it delivered to them, but that there was no explanation of the vehicle controls, no checks for any prior damage; I was just given the key and left to it. Having completed my own checks I discovered that there was a light on the dashboard indicating that the 'Add-blue' required topping up. I informed one of the drivers at the kiosk desk who promptly scratched his head as he had no idea what this was, yet was still able to tell me it would be OK and he couldn't do anything about it. My own experience with Add-blue has led me to believe that the vehicle simply will not start if it does not get topped up. Facing a 4 hr drive to get to our destination and having waited over an hour to collect the vehicle, with no help what so ever from any Hertz staff I made sure I had recovery / breakdown details and set off. On Thursday 19th, the vehicle was on a 1000km countdown to stopping due to lack of the Add-blue and I had to contact the recovery agent (who I was on the phone to for over half an hour) hoping they would put the relatively simple matter right. They in fact informed me that I had to take time out of my holiday to source some Add-blue, spending money out of my own pocket to replenish the Add-blue ! On Tuesday 24th July we arrived back at Barcelona where the vehicle was checked for damage (none – though I wonder what this would have been compared to as this check was lacking on collection of the vehicle) and I went to the Hertz desk for my 14.99 euros refund that I had spent on Add-blue. It was here that the unprofessionalism of this organisation really showed, I got the refund on a card that also said I owed 420.12 euros, a card that is ridiculously overprinted and virtually unreadable, I can accept it is written in Spanish, although why a global company like Hertz can't print readable document in English to assist customers is not for me say. This card should have at the very least been explained and itemised at the point of collecting the vehicle, when I questioned this the representative said it was for 'super insurance'. Confused and by now a little annoyed I asked why was it there, I was told that I asked for it when I collected the vehicle. This is categorically not true, I am now of the opinion that the representative saying "insurance" when I collected the vehicle has added it to my account. I hired the vehicle with the required insurance and certainly did not want anymore. The signature he showed me is now explained as I believe he wanted to somehow cover his actions. The representatives actions were at the very least dubious; I'd go as far to say fraudulent and dishonest; I cant even say he mis-sold because he didn't explain anything, he said "insurance"....which I had, that should not and cannot be taken as wanting extra insurance, if he had explained the cover that he was adding I would clearly have stopped him there and then. " Car was 88 days overdue a service which I raised with counter staff but they were happy for the car to be released. Car also had multiple instances of marks etc on the bodywork, but was otherwise fine. Biggest issue was at drop-off. Counter staff "found" an apparently new mark on the door mirror which they tried to charge me 130 euros for. Given the limited time we used the car I am completely clear that this was not caused by us but appeared to be an attempt to increase their revenue. Also, when I pointed out that our car rental had CDW insurance with zero excess their response was that we had to pay the 130 euros and reclaim the money paid from auto-Europe insurance. Only after I pointed out that the zero excess was part of the rental agreement with dollar did they check their records of our rental agreement and eventually agree with me. I now don't trust dollar and will be checking my credit card statement to ensure they haven't charged me in any case ! "
