    Driving Licence Requirement

    The driving licence requirements in the Dominican Republic state that you must be at least 18 years old to drive and have a full driving licence valid in your country of residence.

    Age Restrictions

    Generally, the minimum age to hire a car in the Dominican Republic is 21 years old (in some cases, 25 years old with major suppliers). You will need to produce a valid Passport, a valid Driver's License (International or from your own country) and a credit card, in order to secure you rental car in the city of Santo Domingo and other destinations in the country.

    Driving Rules and Petrol Stations

    • Drivers are to carry a valid driver's licence, registration documents and insurance documents at all times while driving.

    • Petrol stations in the Dominican Republic generally close at 6pm, although a few do offer 24 hour service. Many are closed or only open for half a day on Sundays.

    Tolls are charged on all of the main roads from Santo Domingo.

    Parking Information

    Parking in most areas tends to be free, although you may come across charges in larger towns. Many hotels offer free parking with your stay. Check when booking your car hire in the city of Punta Cana or any other city in the island.

    One-Way Car Hire

    One way car hire within the Dominican Republic is possible, but usually will incur an additional fee. These fees will vary depending on your collection and drop off destinations but you can find out the price in advance. A minimum three day car rental contract is required for all domestic one way bookings.
