Change in Car Type Without Notice Upon arrival at your office, I was informed that my reserved small compact petrol car was substituted for a large diesel vehicle, without any prior notice or consultation. This was not the vehicle I had requested or paid for, and no explanation was offered for this change. 2. Inconvenient and Illogical Pick-Up Process To add to the frustration, the car pick-up location was a 15-minute walk from the office, requiring me to carry two pieces of luggage across streets--an unreasonable inconvenience for a rental service. What is typically standard practice--providing car pick-up at the store or arranging transport for customers--was not adhered to. Having to walk this distance both ways was entirely unnecessary and reflective of poor customer consideration. 3. Lack of Support at the Pick-Up Point Upon reaching the pick-up location, the staff there made it clear that they were not responsible for rental issues, leaving me unable to raise my concern about the inappropriate vehicle substitution. This lack of accountability and cohesion within your team was frustrating and unacceptable. 4. Poorly Maintained Vehicle The car I was issued was severely under-maintained: It was delivered without sufficient AdBlue, critical for a diesel vehicle. After driving only 200km, the car displayed a warning that it could not start within 200km without a refill. This situation could have been entirely avoided had the vehicle been serviced and inspected properly before being issued to me. 5. Inconvenience and Personal Time Lost Due to this negligence, I was forced to search over 10 petrol stations before finding AdBlue, costing me two hours of travel time and considerable stress. The responsibility of maintaining and servicing the vehicle lies entirely with Europcar, and this failure on your part caused unnecessary disruption to my trip. "

" We collected a Fiat Tipo (as ordered) from Bologna airport on 4th April. Upon collection it was apparent that the car was covered in dents and scrapes, which was disappointing but we accepted it. We then set off for Florence where we were staying for 3 nights, approximately 30 minutes into our journey the engine management light came on when we were on the Autostrade. This obviously gave me some concern but we managed to get to our accomodation okay. We did not use the car for a day as we were using public transport to view Florence. On 6th April, the car would not start using the key. Luckily I'd parked on a slight slope so I managed to bump start the car. We then set off for Siena for a day trip. Again, approx 30 minutes into our journey, the engine management light and power steering warning light came on along with another light that I did not recognise. This caused me some real concern as we had 3 children in the car. We googled the nearest depot and luckily you had one in Siena. I must say that the staff there were extremely helpful and exchanged the car for us.The replacement car was however a petrol, not a more efficient diesel that we'd ordered. Also, despite the car being an SUV, the boot was much smaller and did not fit our suitcases in, which was an issue as we were touring around a bit. My other concern is regarding the fact that I have received a 'return report' a short time after i'd returned the car to Bologna airport this morning. Despite me filling the tank in Modena last night (at a cost of £76.25) and topping it up 1km from the airport this morning (at a cost of £6.79), the report says that we returned the car only 7/8 full. The staff member did not mention this to me as I would have checked myself.I categorically disagree with this. I would really appreciate it if you can please review this case and come back to me. "

But Europcar dismissed that saying I ought to pay an additional 200 odd GBP to have proper cover otherwise there is a risk they would see a scratch after I returned it and have to charge me. " I was told I could not take time to check damage to the car against the schedule as staff were busy (with the one other customer who arrived after me). I was told I should not worry that listed damage was not accurate and should just take photos and leave. This was rude and stressful. In the end it worked out OK. "

When I conveyed my concern that the car was not big enough for 4 people and their luggage the surly Europcar counter staff woman just kept on saying 'similar' and added: Do you want the car or Not? What an attitude especially as we had paid over £600 for a week thinking that the car would have been suitable for 4 people. Wont make that mistake again and I encourage you to ensure that we get something near the oft quoted 'similar' car instead of fobbing us off saying there was no other car available. It came pretty close to defrauding us and you were the agents for this. I think we should have a refund. As it was we all squeezed into the Clio and put up with it. "

After spending time researching prices, insurance information and reviews, I paid £70 -£80 extra for the recommended full cover insurance to avoid potential issues. I read the extra detailed information for this add on and I was confident everything was fine. The total hire was around 100 more expensive than the cheapest available but I felt better having the peace of mind. On picking up the keys from Autoeurope at Palermo Airport I received a VERY aggressive sales push from the Autoeurope rep. He virtually demanded that I buy the extra top up insurance from him. He told me that the insurance i had bought through Europcar's website was the broker's insurance and didn't mean anything and was worthless stating that any scratches more than 20mm would be charged for and could work out very expensive for me. Sicily's roads in towns can be very narrow and driving is very difficult be stressed. I held my ground and refused which seemed to annoy him. We arrived quite late at night and were tired after our long journey. On inspecting our hire Fiat 500 we were amazed and disappointed to see there were dents and scratches everywhere! The car was so dented and marked it would be difficult to find a door, wing or bumper without a mark. I videoed the entire exterior of the car in case we had any problems when we returned it. The car was great inside though it hadn't been cleaned! It performed flawlessly during our stay and I really enjoyed driving it! I usually drive a much larger automatic car but this small manual car was fun to drive! However the insurance threat was always in the back of my mind throughout the holiday. Returning the car was easy and the gentleman who booked the car in on my return couldn't have been friendlier and made the process very easy. 5 stars to this gentleman and 1 star or actually zero to the guy in the desk who tried to force extra insurance on me and made me worry about this during our holiday! This is usually after a tiring long flight or journey. At Catania airport there was not enough European staff to deal with the pick up/drop off process. "

He refused to wait and told me to come back in the morning. This was incredibly inconvenient but I managed to make it back by 11.30 when he told me there wasn't a car available because he'd told me to get there by 8.30. He never said 8.30. I would never have been able to make it for 8.30 so I would have told him that at the time. I managed to keep my cool but his manner was horrendous. When I switched off the car a dialog box was saying low pressure on tyres When I took the car to drive to the airport one wheel was flat. I had left extra time to stop at the garage to check the tyres and then drive back to Malpensa airport. It was 1.30 and my flight I called the assistance and at the same time noticed that there was no spare tyre but just a compressor but the foam was coming out from the wheel and did not work. In the mean time I was asking for a replacement car and was told that there was ony one in Guarene the opposite direction of Milan and 70 km away. I had no choice but take a taxi in order not to miss my flight and my daughter's back to London. At the airport I went to Eurostar where I was told to email my taxi receipt, which I did. I have not received an acknowledgement of my email. When tryimg to call Malpensa Eurostar there is no answer and after 20 mn wait the line drops. Eventually a guy took the keys and tried to con me for the damage. I pointed out my video and he shut up. I then found out that I did not have to hand it back until 24hrs. I had booked for a specific time scale and took that as the agreement so am actualy out of expense for this too. I will peruse compensation for all of the above. Appalling service. " Europcar initially failed to provide us with an acceptable car The nominated automatic car was filthy dirty and damaged and they could not offer any alternative automatic car of any size or make. We were forced to accept a manual car which was also filthy dirty when offered to us but, after washing, proved to be a very nice car for me but not entirely for my wife who much prefers an automatic. It took the best part of two hours to resolve the situation. The desk clerk was pleasant and as helpful as he could be but let down by the poor management of Europcar. "

We booked in for our car (an Automatic Golf) and then went to the parking area to pick up the car only to find that it was filthy dirty (covered in what looked like white foam). " Firstly I have been charged 197 euros and I don't know why (an extra 36.60 Euros), I thought the price I had paid was full rental price, I did not take any extras. Secondly, the vehicle return was a disaster, the girl at the desk told me as I collected the vehicle to collect from P1, and return to P2, parking but not the area where normal hire cars go because ours was a minivan. I brought it back to P2, parked as close as possible to the desk (about 10 mins walk), the man at the desk said I should not leave it there and I should go back and get the vehicle and bring it back to either P1, or the standard car collection area. After arguing, I retuned to the car, 28.5 mins later and had to pay my own money to take the car from P2 and take it back to P1. When I got back to the Europcar desk, the staff refused to reimburse my extra parking charges saying I should not have taken to P2. I was also by this time 45 mins of messing about that I did not need, I was hot and bothered. Extremely poor service. I expect the issue is because the instructions given about returning the vehicle were not clear enough, maybe they should do a printout for minivan return instructions in different languages? Thirdly, the snow chains included with the vehicle, one of the 2 chains was smaller than the other and it was broken. I needed to use the chains during my trip, and was only able to put one chain on the vehicle making it dangerous to drive on snow covered mountain roads. Otherwise the vehicle was in very good condition. I have hired cars at Bergamo for the last 7 years, I have never previously experienced the issues I experienced with Europcar. Very very poor, and I am out of pocket. "

" In addition to my comments above, as there were only 1.5 operatives at the pick up desk, there was a massive queue which spilled from the pavement onto the roadway outside the Europe area office and a driver, not familiar with the car he collected reversed back out of control and knocked over suitcases on top of children waiting with their oarents to collect cars, trapping them betwee the suitcases and the window of the office. Thankfully no one was hurt but the kids were in shock. This was very distressing to observe. "

As there is no nearby petrol station having filled the tank outside of Venice €60, I was still charged for an additional 6 litres of petrol. Overall this was very disappointing. "

I was told I would be given a Panda, but it would have to come from the garage which would take 20 minutes maximum. We went to the compound to wait. The first car to arrive was a Fiat 500 and very apologetically the driver went off to get a Panda. 50 minutes later he arrived back with the correct car, handed us the keys and left. The gentleman in charge of the compound was very apologetic about the wait, but said there was nothing he could do but await the arrival of the car from the garage. As our flight from Cantania was half an hour late getting in, surely the car should have been in the compound before we had landed? "

They only had one member of staff working, who had to take calls, returns, and give out new cars when possible - she tried hard, but there was too much for her to deal with on her own. The queue was badly organised. I waited from 9.45 to 12.10 before a car was ready for me. The car itself was great, and the return process was very easy (and excellent that it could be returned to an alternative Milan office free of charge). "

" On pick up the car we had to wait for a clean car and then our pre-hire inspection identified some scratches not on the damage sheet. On return a further scratch was identified which you would need to bend down to see as it was low on the front number. I am sure I would have noticed causing this but as I had not found it earlier I have got landed with an excess charge. This has left a very sour taste and I am sure that it will not get repaired so it feels like a classic tourist rip off. "
