Upon the return, I had to stress the need for a receipt and this took ages to be delivered. I was not expecting an old and tired car for a rental and this was completely unacceptable. I contacted Auto Europe and am quite honestly disgusted with the initial person's response. He basically could not have cared less, even suggesting that we cancel the existing booking and rebook - he could not be sure we would get our money back, but I very much doubted it. He did give me the telephone number, but did not offer to email and let Firefly know that we were still arriving. The impression I got was you have made the booking, we have done our bit so you are on your own and I do not care. The lass I spoke with secondly was more helpful. I have had this attitude from Auto Europe in the past. Auto Europe have been our car hire company of choice in the past, but I will now reconsider. "

" I consider that it is bad practice on behalf of Firefly to rent a car which had clearly not been properly checked. See Note 3 above for more detail. "
" I collected the Firefly rental car from Alghero Airport in Sardinia on 2/10/2018. After leaving the rental area I immediately noticed the sound of a warning gong from the dashboard and the dash display showed various text messages in German (a language I do not speak). I stopped and inferred from the display graphic that two tyres were probably underinflated; further more a light bulb icon suggested to me a lamp might have also been defective. A visual inspection of the tyres suggested all tyres were inflated to about the same level so I continued to a garage and inflated the two offending wheels to 2 bars (there was no handbook present in the car glove box). I continued the journey to Dorgali and the inflation warnings had now disappeared. In Dorgali I download an Opel Adam handbook from the internet and checked the tyres again, the front right was down slightly and the others were normal. I was concerned about the front wheel and contacted a rental representative 39-079-935054 the lady was helpful and suggested I took the car to a garage and said a puncture repair should cost about 20 euro which I could claim if I had a receipt. She also said I could substitute the spare wheel and I told her I had considered this option but the Adam does not carry a spare. The first service agent I visited said the dash indication was probably false and I understood the mechanic had found a general 'reset' procedure for the info display and had implemented this. Returning to the car the following day I noticed the front wheel was completely flat, using the electric tyre pump supplied with the car I reinflated the tyre to the correct 2.2 bar and returned to the same service agent. He said they did not repair tyres and suggested I took the car to another agent about 1km away. The tyre agent removed the wheel and following an inspection said it would be dangerous to repair the tyre and it should be replaced, which he subsequently did. I was very dissatisfied with the condition of the vehicle I received; I cannot believe the car had been properly checked before being rented to me, any experienced member of staff should have easily spotted the problems with this particular car with its high level of self testing just by driving a short distance. This experience of course had a detrimental effect on my holiday. "

" If you pay for a larger car, which we did, then are given a car that had been in the next category down at the time of booking, one feels somewhat cheated. The cars at Ciampino are always dirty and this one, a Fiat 500L, was not only filthy but the second choice, as we were initially allocated an even smaller car, (also badly damaged). Altogether unsatisfactory and WHY do they take so long tapping details in at the desk? All details should be sent in at the time of booking and you should be able to turn up with the booking confirmation and ID and be shown to your car. Time for a big and long-overdue shake-up of the whole process. "

" As above - car which had already done 78,000 km, full of unmarked scratches and dents, which puts a lot of pressure on the rentee to check everything on the car. My guess is that Firefly are able to offer a good price because they buy up cars from the more reputable hire companies, who usually have given me a car which was either nearly new, or had done no more than 10,000km. " The car had done 78,000+ and was full of scratches and dents. It was also not clean on the outside. I was told by the counter staff that every new scratch over 1cm would be counted. As a lot of the scratches were not indicated on the document I was given, I asked the person in the car park dealing with drop-offs etc. to scrutinize the car with me. He was very brusque, but eventually did come over to mark on the document all the scratches not mentioned. On the plus side the rental was one of the cheapest, on the minus side, I have never been told that every new scratch over 1cm would be counted, especially on a car where most of the scratches were not even identified. Would try not to use Firefly again. "

" The car rental site really needs to be on the airport at Florence. The shuttle service meant a long wait in a queue and the site was almost impossible to find on the return as there is no proper signing. A horrible experience, but, to be fair, not Firefly's fault. "

I tried to call the contact number on the voucher repeatedly (on about 15 occasions, at various times). Phone was not picked up. 2. A member of staff at the garage (Nicolo) offered to cash a petrol voucher for me and credit my card (petrol stations near Treviso airport do not give money back for after-hours petrol filling). I left €38 worth voucher with him and informed staff at the airport office. Money was not transferred, there was no attempt to contact me about this transaction and I was not able to get in touch with the airport office. "

Then through no fault of mine or Firefly, on starting up the car there was a loud whoosh noise which turned out to be a pipe join breaking apart under the bonnet. This turned out to be on the air conditioning and it lost all it's gas. As I say this in itself could happen to any vehicle so it was just one of those things but it was getting something done about it where things went wrong. I phoned the roadside assistance number and the man that answered spoke good English. We agreed that the car was still able to be driven and there was nothing that could be done at the roadside to repair this fault, it needed to go into a workshop for the pipe to be repaired and the system refilled with gas. He suggested I either put up with driving with no air con for the remainder of the holiday or contact an agent near to where we were staying to exchange the vehicle. Again, no complaints from me up to this point, he did his job properly. As the temp that day was 37 deg celsius and we had paid for a car with air con, we decided we would try to get another car. The number the roadside assistance gave me was unobtainable so I called the Pisa airport Firefly number where we picked the car up which was about 2 hours drive from where we were staying. Pisa airport Firefly did not answer even after several attempts. I then tried Florence airport which was slightly nearer to us. They suggested I take it to the agent in Arrezzo which was the nearest big town with an agent. The lady there was very helpful and spoke good english but she told me they did not have another car to let me have. We had a limited internet access but I managed to send an email to Firefly customer assistance in fact over the next 2 days I sent them 4 emails. there was no reply other than an automated acknowledgement message saying they pride themselves in good customer service and would get back to me as soon as possible after reviewing my problem. It is now over a week later and I am back home in the UK now and still I have not had any reply from Firefly customer service. When I dropped the car off at Pisa airport the staff were very friendly and helpful and apologised for the problems saying if I had taken it back to the airport they would have exchanged it but when I explained I had called Firefly at the airport and got no answer they were embarrassed. I was not going to drive 2 hours each way as well as the cost of fuel without them first confirming over the phone that they could exchange the car. So apart from a rubbish customer service dept I am happy with Firefly in general. "

" I advised we were using T1, it was a massive inconvenience to have to go to T2 to collect and drop off the car with 8 bags and 2 young children, due to this we decided to return the car on the evening before we had planned and had to get a hotel near the airport. If it say 'In-Terminal' it should be in the terminal I say that I am using. "

Nobody available to check car when I returned it, I had to leave key and documents in a box. Also it was extremely inconvenient to have to go to T2 with multiple bags and children to collect the car when I landed at T1. " The Car, even though it was of the goup chosen, was just like a small van and it stunk of cigar/cigarette smoke, was parked in a obscure place, very tight space with a bigger van obstucting the exit view (without help would not had been possible to get it out of its parking space). After point this out to the counter staff ie: type of car, bad odour (by the way my wife is allergic to smoke and I had to wait about half hour with all the doors open to dissipate the bad odour after spraying its interiors with perfume) and parking restrictions ,was told that it was the only one available but for an extra 10euros a day they could give me a different one. Then they refunded after I returned the car but I had to pay to the bank around 40 pounds commission rate and currency exchange. This thing that they took the money instead of only blocking the amount on the card is unacceptable, I never had it before with any other rental company, and I should be refunded the money it cost, as they did not tell me in advance that they had this kind of problems with debit cards. " The car was modern and in good order. Pick up and drop off was at Terminal 2, which was a bit awkward as we landed at Terminal 1. Fuel stops in or near the airport are limited and we did not have time use one and therefore had to drop the car off requiring a quarter tank of fuel top up, as we were in a rush to meet our flight due to our journey to the airport being delayed. The charge by Firefly to top up the fuel is very expensive at 37 euros plus fuel when compared to other hire companies at Milan who charge around 20 to 25 euros. "
" I only used a quarter tank of fuel and we looked for a fuel stop close to the airport but were unable to find one, hence I had to drop the car off requiring a fuel top up. I was told that Firefly would charge 37 euros + cost of fuel, which I think is overpriced as Sixth only charged me 25 euro recently at the same airport. Incidentally fuel stops are plentiful when leaving the airport but very rare when entering the airport, which seems to be the opposite of what is required. If the car hire company could provide recommended locations near the airport for refueling when returning the car that would be very helpful! "

" While I accept that the practices referred to above are standard for the industry , I think some greater degree of transparency in the booking process is called for, including what was covered by the additional insurance I took out at the time of the booking. "
" Vehicle condition was OK, though the Fiat Punto provided is not of an equivalent standard to the Opel Corsa which was the vehicle featured in the booking. I understand that an alternative may be offered, but having driven both vehicles, I do not consider the Punto as good as the Corsa. I was also annoyed that when , as far as I was aware , I had taken out additional insurance , which I imagined would cover all contingencies, the Firefly staff, gave me the "hard sell" about extra insurance products , which would cover me for damage to the vehicle. My annoyance was further compounded when , on returning the vehicle, a staff member drew my attention to some extremely trivial scratch marks on the left hand front bumper (which I do not accept had been incurred during my hire period) and tried initially to charge me for them. On collecting the vehicle, I had observed and drawn a Firefly employee's attention to some other superficial marks on the car's bodywork. My point is , since the hire company clearly does not repair such superficial marks on a vehicle before hiring it out again, why does it expect customers to pay for such damage. It seems the whole process was intended in the first place to pressurise me into taking out additional insurance and to punish me for not having done so. On the whole it left a rather nasty taste. "

Although we had paid excess waiver insurance at the time of booking, Firefly advised they had to block 1500 Euro on our credit card. This was above the daily transaction limit we had arranged prior to departure from Australia and as a consequence we had to purchase additional insurance for 194 Euro (despite insurance with Auto Europe). They blocked this amount as well as 250 Euro on our credit card. When we returned the car, they withdrew 194 Euro from our card, but the blocked amount was not released. Despite repeated phone calls, the amount of 444 Euro remained blocked until 24 June, causing us lots of problems. The car was not in the best shape either. "
" We were told that the car we were hiring was new & only had 7000 km on it, when in fact it had 77000 km on it and drove with very bad suspension. The car was dirty and scratched all over and we had to attend a wedding & were very embarrassed to be driving this car ! "

This was marked on the paperwork BUT the diagram is small and on a carbon copy it was difficult to see exactly what this referred to. Whilst we concluded that all damage had been marked this was questioned on our return, however, after we pointed out the rather pale carbon copy markings it was accepted that no new damage had occurred. Neither party is assisted by this documentation approach. With the potential for considerable cost if even a minor scratch is overlooked when picking up a hire car the system for recording existing damage should be reviewed and better methods employed. " I have found the staff at Firefly friendly and helpful. The cars are ex-Hertz and therefore not new. Firefly cars often have minor bodywork/trim damage and sometimes minor faults e.g. horn not working. However the price of the car hire is usually less than other companies. Also, the staff make it clear that bodywork damage of less than 20 cm is not an issue for Firefly. This gives some peace of mind as sometimes minor accidental damage occurs and could cause concern if you were returning an otherwise unblemished new hire car to a less tolerant company.. "

A 45 min wait at pick-up because two customers did not realise they needed a 1500 Euro deposit charge on the same credit card with which they booked the car. Not really the fault of Firefly (other queues also moved slowly). Staff spoke good English and were helpful; the car was clean and full of petrol. Returning the car was also straightforward although the guy who checks vehicles back was nowhere to be seen on arrival. Make sure you take a mobile phone with you! Two pieces of advice: walking to the car hire building is quicker than the shuttle bus; speed cameras in Italy are numerous and well disguised "

" It was possibly an oversight on my part for not fully reading the small print but, until we arrived at Trapani airport, I wasn't aware that the rental company (Firefly) is not actually situated on the airport. Due to a late arrival into Trapani, I had booked an airport pick-up so was surprised to find that we had to be transported to Fireflys depot, just under ten minutes away, from where we collected the car. It was straightforward but, even so, arriving on a late flight, it would still have been preferable to have picked up the car at the airport thus saving time. In terms of Auto Europe, we got a good deal which represented very good value for money. Assuming that their prices remain competitive, we shall definitely use them again. "

If time is not an issue, this is not problematic, since Firefly provide transport between the airport and their depot. However, if time is short or, as in our case, if arriving on a late flight, this is something that might need to be borne in mind. Firefly staff were professional and competent. Only a verbal apology despite all the inconvenience i.e. having to follow a breakdown truck to Cassino to collect another car which meant our journey was delayed by several hours. No offer of refund or recompense for the inconvenience caused by the inadequate condition of the original vehicle, not even for the extra fuel left in the car when we return it. " We were very satisfied by the quality of the vehicle and by the service that we received at the rental office in Italy but we found the Firefly rental office at Ciampino airport very difficult to find. There are a number of different shuttle buses that go to different rental offices at different locations and it was not at all clear which bus we were meant to go on. The bus that we needed to get was not labeled with 'firefly' at all and neither was the bus stop so it left us very uncertain (& stressed!) late at night as to how to get to the rental office to pick up the car. The bus stop and the bus need to have a 'firefly' sign to reassure customers that they are in the right place. Other than that; great. "

This should have been made clear in the instructions. After several calls to them they did eventually send a shuttle but it was almost 2 hours later than the agreed pick up time. I/we, weren't the only ones who had to wait a long time for the shuttle to arrive. They gave me a map to find my way to return the vehicle but it was illegible. I would use Auto Europe again but definitely not Firefly. "
" Well not sure how this works, arrived at auto-Europe counter after queuing 20 minutes only to be told to go to the Hertz counter, so not sure what was going on. But staff very friendly on both counters and helpful. " Once I was given the car I was very pleased because I was upgraded. The problem I had was that the next day I found the front brakes were grinding and badly worn. After contacting Hertz in Naples they told me to go to there office in Avellino which I did on the Tuesday only to be told that Hertz was not the same as Firefly and their was nothing they could do, I would had to travel to Naples to change or repair the car, he tried the car and said I could carry on using it. So I did but was very concerned driving. But all went well. "

" having read some problems with booking car hire in Italy I was very pleased with the service provided. The desk was open, hardly any queue, attendant did all the necessary paperwork quickly - found the car - agreed the existing scratches etc and we were out of the airport in under half an hour or so. Similarly on return car was checked and no problems at all. The only one comment I would make is that signage is not the best either on arrival (you need to get a shuttle bus to the car hire building) or on returning car...but thats part of the adventure! "

" I understand that Firefly vehicles are ex Hertz rental vehicles, and that as such are going to be older and higher mileage. This does not however excuse Firefly for supplying poorly maintained vehicles in bad condition. Previous FF vehicle we had in April had to be refused because of filthy (interior), badly scratched condition and suspicious noise from engine. Our latest rental vehicle was slightly better although the steering was heavy, and upon checking the tyre pressures I discovered that all 4 tyres were less than half the recommended pressure!! (1 bar or less) which is a serious safety concern. Also on both occasions there were long waits in queue to check in/out due to insufficient staffing. Firefly need a good safety audit. "

We had just put in 70euros of petrol into the car via a self service pump which would not produce a receipt (tried over and over). When we returned the car the petrol guage was very very slow in indicating the petrol that had just gone in and so the firefly employees charged us 25 euros for more petrol and 40 euros for the 'work' involved in refuelling the car plus 13euros in tax. This was 23 hours "early" on our 7 day contract but firefly thought they had a 6 day rental. It would have been easier if we had said we would return car on the Wednesday rather than the Tuesday. This would have been a bit of a nonsense but would have prevented the argument with firefly. In the end we were not required to pay extra. "

" Nobody at reception when clients appeared for hire cars. Very off-hand receptionist eventually appeared. Surly manner. Car was a 78,000 km Punto without air conditioning and with stained seats. Its lights were inadequate for driving in the dark on Italian motorways and country lanes. It had a great deal more bodywork damage, including a loose wing, than indicated on the lease form - in fairness, the representative at the car park recorded all the faults and signed for them. Car's performance lamentable on hills (especially motorways). Car returned to Pisa before representative at car park kiosk present, but when, eventually, representative at terminal appeared he accepted my word that no extra damage had been done to the car. "

The number on the document I'd been given didn't ring through - luckily I saw the pick-up vehicle driving out of the airport and flagged it down. The car had marks all over and was not very clean. Worst of all - the place doesn't open until 8.00 a.m. (this only came to light when I was actually picking up the car) and this made for a stressful time in returning the car and getting to the airport in time. The car was a Doblo 1.6 with 60k mileage and was like driving a minibus, nothing like the Ford Fusion I was expecting. I was also filthy inside and out.
