I then had emails saying they had tried to ring (they had not) and had people running around the airport trying to find it, when it was in the right place. I was told via phone call to autoeurope that I "probably should get one". Not exactly a definitive answer... I then emailed Goldcar directly and was told in no uncertain terms that I would need this Permit. I dutifully obtained one costing me time and money. However, nobody at Goldcar bothered asking for it when I collected the car. Complete waste of my time and money and another example of meaningless beurocracy. The people at the car collection area were hideously rude and effectively threw the keys at me and seemed extremely upset I had the nerve to ask them for a car... They were just as miserable when I returned it. I parked it in the area I was told to but apparently this was wrong. I had to walk back and drive it to exactly where they wanted it. Never mind, worse things happen at sea... Despite my moaning, overall it was Ok. "

Two days later I reported this to AE but although the customer agent was very helpful and understanding her manager just said no consideration for refund or credit possible. " booking was fine. The problem was the state of the car and the subsequent extremely unhelpful attitude from Goldcar in Catanie "
" The car had unsafe tyres and also no oil in the engine. I only found this out after starting the rental. The warning lights came on for the oil and also the steering was really wobbly when I exceeded about 70kph but I only reached this speed for the first time after a couple of days. I took the car to a tyre workshop who would not let me drive any further because there was no tread on the tyres which were worn right down to the metal wires. They insisted I had to buy two new tyres before the would let me drive away. I think they were quite correct to do so. That's really dangerous. The car clearly was not inspected prperly prior to hire. Goldcar at Catania were not at all helpful. I have made a formal complaint to Goldcar and also informed yourselves already of the issue. I've never had a problem like this before. Sorry about the scores below but they are based on my experience so far. "

" Prices here are usually the best, and the free cancellation option is very convenient -- due to the flight cancellation I've changed my mind at the last moment and also had to drop the car in a different airport; everythig worked as expected. It is like 3rd of 4th time I used Autoeurope and experience was flawless every time. "
" Agency is mostly ok; it took like an hour to receive the keys as the clerk in Bergamo was pretty slow (like 10-15 minutes per client) so we were a bit late and the booth at the parking lot was already closed (so I have no way to check the car and compare the list of defects with the contract before driving off). On the contrast drop-off process at Malpensa was very fast: park the car, hand over the keys, 1 minute quick inspection and off we go. The car (small Lancia Delta) was good for the price, aircon struggled a bit in 40C but finally came to senses and after some fit of scary gurgling have started producing sufficient amout of cold air :) Will not hesitate to rent from them again. Auto Europe's office was closed , so there was no way to inform of our delay. In addition, we telephoned Goldcar, and their customer service desk was closed as well. There was no way to get through to the Goldcar Catania airport desk. Once we landed at 2am at Catania airport on 8 August, we had to wait until 8am in the morning to get our car. I was of course first in line, but the Goldcar employee told me that the car that I booked for 10:30pm on 7 August was gone! This happened in the span of 30 minutes from 10:30pm to 11pm when Goldcar closes! The only option was for me to pay an additional €105 to upgrade to a different car, otherwise they would not have had anything available! Rubbish service, especially from Auto Europe, who should have longer office hours or some type of assistance service when delays happen! "

I rang your service rep who concurred with GoldCar rep and said an International Drivers Permit was necessary citing the tiny text of the terms and conditions in the voucher of page 4 of 5 but not included in the "what documents do you need" part of the actual email: "* An International Drivers license is mandatory for any non-European license or any license which is not in the Roman alphabet, must presented in addition to home license." This is just wrong. Even GoldCar's FAQ on their website states specifically the UK driver's licence is accepted without requirement for an IDP as it is written in the Roman script and the UK belongs to the International Convention of Vienna 1968 and Geneva 1949, https://www.goldcarhelp.com/en/faqs/227-what-driving-licences-do-we-accept This is what your email to renters tells them they need: "You will need the following documents in the name of the main driver as stated on the voucher to pick up the car: a physical version of your credit card (PIN probably required), driver's license, passport/national ID-card and voucher. " On arriving at Goldcar in Rome ready for our holiday I was told it was a "legal requirement" to have a International Drivers Permit with a UK licence in Italy and that our car could be impounded (leading to excess rental fees) or we could be fined for lacking this simple documentation (that costs £5 but is ONLY available within the UK). I was forced to buy their expensive insurance package to use their vehicle as they claimed my insurance would not cover any damage. Later I learned it was UNTRUE my insurance would not cover it. It is NOT a legal requirement. There is no reason to have this demand except to cheat people into buying insurance. All the permit does is translate the language of the licence (usually non-roman text) into Italian and the Italian police DO NOT require it for UK licences. Therefore it looks a lot like a scam to force people to buy expensive insurance at the rental desk. I am confused and disappointed in autoeurope and GoldCar to be frank. "

" It was difficult to understand clearly the counter staff when collecting the vehicle regarding the level of insurance cover we thought we had already agreed to. WE think we have been overcharged since returning from our holiday and have emailed the company. We experienced problems with the vehicle during the first few hours of driving, with loss of power during driving. This was scary and dangerous for us and other car users. We tried contacting Goldcar on the Sunday and we were told we did not have cover for a replacement and that they could collect the car and take to a garage for repairs but we would be without a car until issue was resolved. this was totally unacceptable as we were staying in a rural location in Belforte near Radicondoli. We were cut off several times and received no return calls from Goldcar. In the end we decided we had no option but to continue to use the car as little as possible . Several warning lights kept coming up. It was a miracle that we were able to get back to the airport! Several times we had to stop and restart the engine. We felt totally let down having been assured that we paid the best price for the best insurance. "

" Goldcar turned down my original UK license, accompanied with my passport as photo ID in PISA despite the Italian embassy in London stating on their terms that it should be sufficient. They insisted on a photo ID license unlike the other operators at PISA. If that is not bad enough, they refused to reimburse the booking fee. Even allowing for their 48-hour cancellation policy, I should have had 4 days of the 6 reimbursed. Their actions were unreasonable. Auto Europe through whom I booked were helpful in enabling to find an alternative hire company but did not try hard enough to recover at least some of the fee. After an hour of pleading with her we had no alternative but to go to another rental firm who were more than happy to accept my documents & provide the vehicle. Hertz and Avis bith offered us a vehicle. So we were not provided with a vehicle from our booking with you and trust you will refund the full amount I paid back onto my credit card. " We were talked into paying an exorbitant amount of euros for extra insurance which I think, introspect was completely unnecessary. When we finally found the Cinque Cento, it appeared to have just been in a crash and had scrapes and dents to the front. I complained to the girl in the car park area and she eventually exchanged it for a Fiat Panda. At the time, I asked the girl to sign our agreement to that effect but she just said I would receive an email saying that we had been given a different car. That email did not arrive and when I telephoned the office they said that although the booking had been amended online, I would not receive any confirmation. During the first hour on the road the Panda flashed up a warning light on the dashboard saying the oil was dangerously low each time we went round a bend. My husband inspected the dipstick and found that there was no oil showing at all so we bought a can and put it in. There was also no water so we replaced that as well. The car has obviously not been checked between customers or maintained in any way and could have been dangerous to drive. I do wonder if the guy on the desk even knew that the Cinque Cento which he offered us had been in a collision. "

If the repair is to change or paint the same rear bumper, whey do they have to charge me twice? It doesn't make sense. It feels like a trap that you cannot avoid unless you are very experienced and took evidence in advance. "

" I will never use Goldcar again. The staff is very rude and not interested in customer service. The cars are in horrible conditions (dirty inside and outside, full of dents and scratches. Our car was so badly damaged that the passenger's door could not be open fully). The rear bumber had a large dent not on the damage report. This was reported before picking up the car and we were told it was ok because it was only the bumper and did not need to go on the damage report. When we returned the cara different person was on duty and tried to charge us for the bumper damage! So dishonest and unprofessional! Hated the experience and I will never use them again. "

And both times on pickup at the desk the staff tried to charge me 2.50 euros a day for the rent because the car was a Diesel engine.!! Likely Italian is my mother thong language and I've explained that is not my problem if they haven't a unleaded engine car!! So I've managed to avoid this extra charge both times. Also I've explained that on the term and condition of my rent trough AUTOEUROPE this DIESEL charges is not specified. So be aware! "

Furthermore this did not arrive until AFTER I had booked the car. I would not have booked the car through your company if it was clear BEFORE the booking that there is a credit card requirement. When I arrived at the airport (after over 15 hours of travel and with two children) I was told that I needed to have a credit card in my name, which I did not have. " This car rental experience was a nightmare. Counter staff at Cagliari airport tried very hard to sell their insurance lying we had no insurance cover although we told him we bought insurance with Auto Europe. We insisted not buying another insurance from him then this was the start of our nightmare. He charged us extra 2.5Euro *7 days for diesel car although we didn't request a diesel car (we understand this fee is charged only if a diesel car is requested). We complained we didn't request a diesel car but no use. He then gave us a faulty car with loose roof lights creating short circuit. After 9hrs (9:00-18:00) parking on the road the next day in Cala Gonone, car battery was totally gone. We called for road assistance, but road assistance came at 14:00 next day that was 20hrs after the incident! After the battery was charged and the car got start, we had to drive to the nearest airport which was Olbia to get a replacement car. After checking the car, the Olbia Goldcar staff was angry that Cagliari staff shouldn't give us this faulty car. When we dropped off the replacement car at Cagliari airport, we met the same guy. We told him our story and asked him to refund the diesel cost of 35 euro for the return journey from Cala Gonone to Olbia. He didn't accept the responsibility and didn't even say sorry. What he said was I told you to buy insurance from us. You didn't so it was your responsibility when car broke down. The Goldcar staff at Olbia is very helpful. "

" The rental was advertised as all inclusive on your website, when we collected the car we were told that insurance was not included and we had the choice of a 1400euro deposit (which we were told would be kept for a month?) or insurance at 200euro which covered everything. On top of that we were charged an additional 17.50euro environment tax for hiring a diesel car, i asked for a petrol car but was told that they are not available, given i had no choice this cost should included in the price quoted? The car had a large scratch down one side, the windscreen inside was filthy and the washer bottle was empty. I would definitely not rent a car from gold again. "

" With Goldstar it appears at the moment it can be hit & miss re car hire. However one cannot fault the price and we shall again look at Goldcar. We have our own place in Italy and have hired cars through Auto Europe for 11 years now and Goldcar we always dismissed because it was usually a shuttle service and poor reviews. They are now in terminal and are i believe trying to get better. The price is the attraction at the moment and we shall again look to rent from them via Auto Europe. "

No water in windscreen wiper box. 2 bad scratches/ small dents on side of car. We took the car back after 2 weeks full of fuel. The reason was simple, the price we paid for the rental was excellent. Pity about the missing fuel though. PS/ on drop off we picked up another pre booked Goldstar car a 500X again and this car was full of fuel and spotless. Well done on price Goldstar. "

" Auto Europe are every bit as much to blame as Goldcar, because it is hardly clear in the instructions that you are not able to use an Amex. This situation must have occurred many many times, and the issue should be in block capitals, and highlighted. As it stands, the information on the voucher was highly ambiguous. Read one way, it states that you cannot use Amex, read another way (from the top of page 2) it says "This rental INCLUDES Amex and Diners Club cards. The whole experience was a disgrace, which cost me not only the cost of my initial rental, which I was never even able to take up, but an additional €500. "
