" Unfortunately, this is the second time I've had a disappointing experience with Goldcar rental. While the desk clerk was very friendly, it was clear that there is a strong push to sell Goldcar's own comprehensive insurance. Despite having purchased full comprehensive insurance in the UK, Goldcar did not recognize it. As a result, they demanded a deposit of €3,500 on my UK credit card. Since my card limit is £2,000, I was left with no option but to purchase Goldcar's full comprehensive insurance, which cost an additional €348.11. Only after receiving the contract did I realize that I could have paid the €3,500 deposit using a debit card, with the amount fully reimbursed upon returning the car undamaged. This option was never explained to me at the desk. When I later raised the issue via email, I was told that the required deposit should have been between €1,200 and €1,600--an amount that my credit card could have covered. Therefore, the purchase of Goldcar's insurance should not have been necessary at all. Goldcar refused to refund the €348.11 I was unnecessarily charged, despite reaching out to them twice via email. "

The hehicle had no windscreen washer fluid whatsoever, I wasn't given a vehicle walk around the check its condition, nor was a given a sort of familiarisation of the vehicle by staff. I was simply given the keys and told to return it with a full tank of fuel. "

" We are GOLDCAR clients for sometime, especial at Faro Airport, but this time went to Lisbon and was an absolute chaos. Doesn't make any sense, taking the ticket to make the contract in one building with a few counters waiting an hour or so and when is your turn you're redirect to another counter in another building. Did not happened with us specifically but with other families with young children and loads of bags, just awful, no empathy what so ever. On arrival, we had 18 people waiting to be checked in. We have to wait more than an hour only to make the contract. The staff member at the counter was polite and quick to answer any questions but unfortunately after waiting an hour for this, they did not have the car that we had booked, so they have to give us another one (upgraded- not much) that we could choose. After that we went to collect the car in another building, first floor of car park. Over there we were asked at least 3 to 4 times by different members of staff what was the contract number to get the car. In the end, when finally the car arrives driven by a member of staff, surprise, we had another member of staff, with his headphones around the head getting a lift to reach his destination that was exactly the place that we were waiting for the car. To finish, the interior of the car was dirty, full of dust. Not happy at all with, GOLDCAR service and staff at Lisbon Airport. A shame for an old car rental name which is not the most cheapest one. "

Fortunately it was dry and we drove quite sensible to our destination. I took the car to a tyre depot and had them check all tyres 1 was very low and the others had different Pressures even the reserve spair wheel. No dust caps on any !!! Once rectified all went well and we could resume our tour with safety. We have used your company many times and always been very happy. The toll system is very ingenious and transparent. " The car had more scratches and scuff marks on every panel. I had a bad feeling with it but i took the car, after being pressure about the "extra insurance required" at the counter and the person who was looking over the car did not speak very good english and missed a few items but as i was late, i did not want to spend an hour going over every single panel and scratch on the vehicle. On returning the vehicle, 0500 hours, there was no body there to inspect and had to drop the car off in the dark and drop keys in a box, therefore nobody inspected with me. A week later i had an email to say they had found another "mark" about 30mm and wanted to charge me £95.08 for repair. i couldnt even tell where they were referring to , it was so small but the point being, i believe it was a scuff mark that was done whilst left at their compound and could quite simply been polished out. I currently disputing the charge via credit card as i dont believe i caused this as i am very careful. Avoid "

" Auto Europe are always easy to use and offer a good selection of rental cars and prices. Unfortunately on this occasion the problem lay with the hire company itself. "
" Price and choice of vehicles were fine, as was booking experience. However pick up was made more stressful by them trying to sell us additional insurance and saying that the zero excess package we had taken with AE was a contract with AE and not Goldcar. I refused to make the additional payment as it would have doubled the cost of the rental. On return I felt they were trying to get us away from the rental site as quickly as possible, but I insisted on waiting until the car had been inspected for damage and signed off as clear. I did not trust that "damage" to the vehicle would be found after I left it. This whole situation marred what should have been an easy rental experience. I have used AE for some time and always choose the ZE package for peace of mind. I have had no issues in previous rentals with Hertz/Dollar and Budget. I have now realised that Goldcar have been part of Europcar since I last hired with them - unfortunately I had similar issues with Europcar in the past and have not used them again - the same will now apply to Goldcar. We did not opt for anything further from goldcar, then not happy to return vehicle it was inspected inside and out told all was ok then hit with €62 charges when we got home that were fraudulent in my opinion. " We had no explanation of how our brand new car drives which would have helped No-one knew anything about a warning light that came on, turned out to be a seat belt not properly engaged, immediately the answer was to return the car to Porto airport, which would have spoiled a whole day. We returned it early but had not filled it with petrol. When I offered to get some they said no problem, they would sort it out. But then when the final bill came we were charged an exorbitant amount for half a tank of petrol & a fine of 50 euros!! Worst of all was the badgering about our excess waiver insurance when we picked it up. This is a complete con & should be made clear at the start when you book the car, that you will be advised to take their very pricey insurance, as they say your insurance won't cover everything. I don't know why you let them get away with this nonsense. It is very unpleasant & leaves everyone feeling conned. I would alter my holiday in future specifically so that car hire was not necessary. " On returning the car, the attitude of the staff was extremely unhelpful , when first taking the car on the toll roads, by mistake I went through the ticket barrier, after that I continued on the auto transponder. On returning the car, I explained this and expected some guidance or help in what to do about this. The unhelpful member of staff just told me to call the No. on the ticket and sort it out myself. Also when we were using the car for our stay, we were parked in a parking bay on the side of the road in Tomar , on returning to the car we were told that a cyclist had hit the car and caused it slight damage to the front right wing, this was explained to the member of staff who didn't seem to care. When we arrived home, an email from gold car gave us 48 hours to send an accident report. There was no accident, as the car was stationary, and we were nowhere near it. Also WRT full insurance via auto europe, we were told, did not count in portugul, so we then had to pay an other 149 euro's for the correct cover. So when you look at the situation, its not very clear, auto europe is not telling the truth when some one like from the uk pays good money for full insurance, only to find in portgul its not worth the paper it is written on. The man who showed us the car had no idea how to fit a seat belt secured infant seat and initially fitted it front facing then rear facing after I explained that infant seats never face forward, but the seat belt was over where the baby was. I sent him off to get someone who knew but he came back and said to scan the QR code and do it ourselves! He took longer checking the car for scratches than the seat! The car itself was fine as was the hand back which was so smooth as to be a different company. It's a shame that pick up was so dire as I would be very reluctant to use them again. "

" Check-in and collection of the car took about 2 hours. We didn't get to our apartment until after 2 am. I was aware of the deposit to be paid but they tried to sell me an additional insurance. It was ridiculously overpriced and he kept on trying to get me to take it out. After the long wait I was getting very irritated. We only used the vehicle to get us across to Lagos. We didn't use it again until the following Thursday as the weather wasn't so good. After a short drive the pressure low light came on for one of the tyres. I stopped and did a visual check. There wasn't an obvious puncture so I restarted to get to a garage. Shortly afterwards 3 other warning lights came on. I got to the nearest town and called recovery. It took 90 minutes to get to us and they provided a taxi to get us back to Faro. This wasn't at all convenient as we were at the other end of the Algarve. Once there they handled it pretty well and gave us a minor upgrade. I then had to drive back to Lagos. It wasted around 6 hours in all and ruined our evening, getting back to the apartment at around 9 pm. "

However, upon arriving at the Gold Car hub, my frustration began to build as I had to wait for almost an hour to pick up the car. The delay was caused by numerous customers complaining and raising their voices about various issues. To my surprise, I was informed that I had to pay an additional fee of €1200 for insurance, even though I had already paid for it online. The staff at the counter claimed that the insurance I had purchased was from a broker and not valid. Furthermore, I was going to be charged €40 as a penalty for being late, although my lateness was a result of the extended waiting time caused by the number of customers expressing their concerns. Additionally, I was asked to pay €150 euros for toll charges and €60 for petrol, in case I forgot to top up before returning the car. As these were not the terms I signed up to upon reservation and payment. I was forced to cancel the reservation due to the extortionate amount I was asked to pay. With almost two hours passed and my two children and wife having to wait. As a last resort we had to take a taxi to hour hotel at 12:30 in the morning. It WAS returned full and since it was a Fiat 500 hired there was no way it could hold Eur 290 of fuel. They told me to contact customer services. " I was not sure whether I would use the Toll Road. They charged me for the full period (E 40.91) and said I would be refunded for the unused days. I used it on ONE day. I had an e-mail yesterday to say I would be charged E 4.10 for the tolls on the day I used it. That has gone through today. I have not seen the refund for the remainder yet. Also, the car was damaged in many areas, which didn't matter to me, however, there was no water in the screenwash bottle. I filled it up and only the rear washer worked. After inspection, I found the pipe to the front washer had become disconnected and water was simply leaking into the engine compartment . I managed to reconnect this myself. Not a very good pre rental inspection procedure. "

" I an very disappointed with the overall experience. I know it's entirely down to Goldcar for supplying us with an un roadworthy car but I feel Auto Europe should insist on better service from the companies they use to provide vehicles for their customers. "
" After the chaos of the queues at the check in desk finally getting to pick up our car the staff were nowhere to be found in the car park, just randomly wandering about with no interest in engaging with the customers. On being given the keys to an Astra I had to make my way around several other cars to gain access to the drivers door as it was parked up against a pillar making it very difficult to get into the car. The damage sheet for the car was incredible, it looked like it had come from Beirut! It was not possible to fully inspect the car as the car park was dark and there were so many people trying to get in and out of parking spaces etc that it was also dangerous. When we finally had our luggage in the car and went to leave we found that there was no fuel in the car. The staff then gave us the keys to another vehicle, a Crossland which also looked like it had come from a war zone. After carefully leaving the airport and heading out of Lisbon I was driving towards a toll barrier, pressed the brake pedal to discover that the brake pads were down to the metal! There was also a very loud whirring noise coming from a c/v joint on one of the drive shafts. A few days later while in the town of Caramulo for the motor festival the release button on the hand brake on the car fell out locking the hand brake on. It took me nearly half an hour to release the hand brake before I could move the car. As a result of the dangerous condition of the car we didn't attend the second day of the motor festival as we couldn't risk driving on the mountain roads, so I phoned the Faro office and arranged to exchange the vehicle on the Monday. That was another day of our holiday wasted as it was a five hour drive with over 40 Euros in tolls but ultimately easier than trying to get back into Lisbon in heavy traffic with defective brakes. "

You would not take my Amex card for the deposit and refused to take my partner's credit card - and are now holding onto my money for 30 days - for no good reason. Absolutely deceitful and bordering on criminal behavior. "

" Where do I start? Overall to call the service subpar would be a compliment! I was unaware I was renting through a 3rd party service and I will not make that same mistake in the future. We paid around £80 extra for some kind of liability cover which wasn't honoured by Goldcar and we had to fork out a further £200+ to insure the vehicle on the spot which for a young couple holidaying on a tight budget was a massive shock. The vehicle was clean when we picked it up as expected but the brake pads are clearly on their way out, I'm no mechanic but my brake pads have never sounded as worn down as the ones in this vehicle. Maderia's roads are precarious enough for a young driver without having a vehicle in which you can't trust the brakes. "

The man who served us picking up the vehicle came across as very condescending which I could've done without landing after 11pm. I wasn't aware that Goldcar wouldn't honour the liability cover I had bought from Auto Europe at the point of booking, so with this, airport taxes (fair enough) and the fuel deposit we were instructed to pay over £400 extra to release the vehicle. Despite having hired cars round the world with no issue, assistant refused to accept my credit card for deposit (husband main driver - he has no credit card), wouldnt change me to main driver, wouldnt refund booking (as our flight was delayed & therefore, according to him, rental had started already). Put us over a barrel basically & forced my husband to pay a further non refundable amount of approx £200 for full insurance (I'd already paid £220 for hire, including additional insurance). Shocking, I recommend you sever relations with these charlatans. Manner of agent was rude, bored & abrupt & another customer was having similar issue beside us & getting same treatment (he was VERY cross!). Also charged approx £170 deposit for fuel - even though a full to full policy, I've never seen this anywhere in years of hiring vehicles multiple times!! "

She was that rude I wanted to take a picture of her at which point she said she was calling the police on us. They would not accept the insurance we had bought via auto Europe and demanded we purchase theirs when we declined they refused to accept a debit card for the deposit they wanted to take of 1200€ and would only take it with a credit card. I only had a debit card but they would not accept my partners credit card. They therefore m'aide us purchase the insurance again from them directly or not hire the car to us. It was a terrible experience and ruined the start of our much needed holiday. I do feel that auto Europe should mention that this at purchase. We ended up with two insurances because of this. And wasted our hard earned money. "

" Everything regarding booking, collection and return was excellent except for how they handle problems with the vehicle. On the 2nd day of rental several warning lights came on advising of a problem with the brakes. The breakdown phone was initially not answered then was answered and when I asked whether they spoke English they hung up. Because of this I tried the customer services number who answered but were not interested and just told me to phone the breakdown number. I sent emails that were never answered. On the morning of the 3rd day I got through to the breakdown line and they advised me to drive to the nearest Goldcar rental depot some 100km away. The car was quite new and would be under warranty so I took it to a Toyota dealer a few km away to make sure it was safe to drive - it was and they could have fixed it but Goldcar wouldn't let them. Because rentals were busy I phoned and emailed to make sure a replacement car would be available - no answer to the email and the telephone helpline could not tell me nor could they phone the rental office to check for me. Cars develop faults but Goldcar need to review how customers are handled as this is really poor. "

" When i rang you the two operatives I spoke to also, like me, did not really understand what a "Driver Licence Code" is. After taking an age to get through to someone they kept putting me on hold and eventually transffered me to some phone number which after 30 minutes of waiting I gave up expecting a reply. I have been coming to Auto Europe for many years and I think this will be the last time. My other booking with Rentastar was excellent and I eventually managed to rent a card with them after a few days, great quality, good customer service and nothing too much trouble also my driving licence was valid with them, unlike Goldcar! It ended up with no car for 10 days due to their unhelpful attitude and unwillingness to help. They are the only car hire people on the strip who require a "Drivers Licence Code" and would not help at all save to give me an incorrect web site to visit. There were others there who they also refused to give a booked car to and one of their operatives said to one customer when they complained "Well you will not be getting a car" due to him disputing the hire arrangements. There was also a family with 2 young children who they also had no willingness to help and who left in tears. All the locals I talked to in Portugal told me never use Goldcar as they are like the plague. I will never use them again. "

To load on E195.47 of charges to a quoted car hire is outrageous especially when at that stage of collection cancellation is not an option due to the non return of payment already made. "
" I had my own CDW insurance with Zurich which Gold Car refused to accept and insisted that I had to have their CDW insurance which I was charged E153 plus E21.53 for a toll reader plus E20.94 Airport tax. Then I had to register my credit card for the following amounts , E300 Insurance excess, E120 Fuel and E70 for tolls. My toll usage was E2.15. I am still awaiting the refunds to my credit card. "

However Goldcar told me it wouldn't cover my excess in Portugal and if I scratched or dented the car they would take €1400 from my card. It is not accepted by the local hire companies and you will still need to pay excess. I think the insurance products are confusing. "

With the local tax, smart return ( again not requested) & toll sensor hire i have been charged £347 . 28 extra. That ammounts to £26.61 more than i actually paid Auto Europe for the car & insurance. I also had to give 75 Euros deposit each for Tolls & Fuel. To cap it all the fuel level was not full as the contract stated and after a few miles the fuel gauge had dropper two bars. When you are in a busy office & desperate to start your holiday it is easy to be mislead and with it being in Euros can be quite confusing. I would like somebody to come back to me on these charges. What a way to start your holiday. "

This time when I checked in the desk operator was nice and friendly until I said I did not want to pay for the extra insurance to cover the excess, as I had my own independent insurance to cover that. He then became quite aggressive and started listing a long list of charges that I could be charged for. I asserted that I still did not want the extra insurance. He then gave me the paperwork and keys for the car but said I would have to get the car checked and any damage noted by another operative before I could drive away. I had to wait for more than half an hour to have the car checked. This is normally done before I get the keys, so I only need to check that any damage is noted before driving away. I feel that the policy now is to make life difficult for clients who refuse their ridiculously expensive extra insurance. I was also charged an extra £10.27 for "smart return". As a result of this negative experience I will not use Goldcar again, even if they are cheaper.t "

(I was warned by the company Sannef UK Ltd. who supplied my tag that Car Hire Company staff at Faro Airport will suggest that I could only use their tag and that this was incorrect). "
" Counter staff on collection were not at all friendly and at times somewhat agressive particularly in relation to my request to use my own motorway toll tag which I had purchased in the UK for use in Portugal. (I have already been in contact with AutoEurope to determine their response to this problem). The Goldcar Counter Staff were both extremely agressive and emphatic I could not remove their Tag (which would have been necessary if I were to use my Tag) and that I would be subject to a heavy fine if I did. In the end for the sake of expediency and peace of mind I found I had little alternative but to accept their demands. The car was in general in good order but did have a total of 19 damaged areas ranging from just a small scratch to severe damage as identified by Goldcar staff. It was thus disconcerting to know whether I had spotted all the damage for the counter staff made it quite plain that I would be charged the full excess fee of 1600 euros should the car be returned with additional damage to that recorded at collection. With so much existing damage it would have been easy to miss additional scratches. Drop off was generally OK although their was some delay in waiting for the car to be cleared at Check In. I have yet to recieve a final settlement figure which should only be for motorway toll charges. "

We found the car and upon examination discovered three areas of damage which we marked on the appropriate paperwork and took it back into the office for a signature. During our stay in Burgau the car was damaged by a hit and run driver whilst the car was parked on the road outside our apartment causing slight damage to the two nearside doors and a rear panel. There was no damage to the door mechanism and both doors could be operated normally. On returning the car we informed the checker about the damage and she took photos etc to assess the damage. We where quiet staggered when we were told we had to pay 965Euros for the cost of repairs as the damage seemed minimal. We have since requested by email for a copy of the photos but nothing has been sent. Luckily we took a photo ourselves and have shown it to a local body repair company who suggests that the repair cost should be around half of Gold cars charge. We would ask if you could request Gold cars to reconsider there charges in line with the actual cost. "

When at the desk I was told the car I had booked was unavailable so I would have to pay for an upgrade. At the counter they said I had to purchase their insurance or I couldn't hire the car. I was told I also had to pay Airport Tax on top of that. None of this was explained well and I wasn't sure if what I was paying would be refunded once I returned the car. As a fuel deposit I had to pay £108, and only received £102 when this was refunded. In total it cost me £112.30 to hire a small car for 2 days, and the whole experience was extremely stressful and confusing. Even returning the car was a strange experience with nobody checking the car off thoroughly, all they were interested in was if the tank was full. DO NOT USE GOLDCAR! The cheap price may be tempting but they more than make their money back with hidden extra charges. Furthermore the complete lack of professionalism and the high pressure sales tactics made what should have been a simple start to a happy holiday a very stressful experience. I have told all my friends and family to avoid using this company and can only hope it's a matter of time before they are shut down. "

I booked with yourselves for the first time and upgraded the insurance to the better level of cover for added security. We had saved for this holiday and only had a set amount saved. We were mortified that this car that usually cost us around £50 was now up to £225!!! we gave them our debit card and left, without reading in detail the other add ons that were also added! 3 days later they took £401.66 from our account the 1 week car hire has now cost over £450!!! We are beyond angry and disappointed and since coming home have looked at Goldcar reviews which foolishly we did not before! The amount of people who have been treated this way is nothing short of scandalous! There are some that have said they declined to take out theGoldcar insurance to then have their debit cards used to take £100s and sometimes £1000s out of their banks claiming there was damage to the cars! I feel we have been well and truly scammed and the money taken from our account was our saved spending money. We had to limit ourselves for the rest of our holiday. It ruined our time away. On dropping off the car it was early morning and the office was closed, there were no signs or instructions to be seen. " I don't usually respond to surveys of this type, but felt compelled to do so this time based on my hire experience and the fact that I have still not resolved issues arising from this. Things started badly when we picked up the car. The car itself was dirty and the damage paperwork pre-completed by Goldcar in no way reflected the amount of scratches and damage that were on the vehicle. So with their representative we spent a good 10 minutes or more inspecting the car all round and adding additional damage indications to the paperwork. We tried to insist that all marks were recorded despite the fact that the representative told us that they were only really interested in the larger dents and scratches. On our return, having had no issues with the car and certainly no accidents or collisions of any sort, the Goldcar representative receiving the car indicated that they had found 'accident damage' that was not on the paperwork. This was the case, but this damage amounted to a minor scuff on the bumper which was significantly less than damage that, on pickup, they had previously told us they weren't interested in. I strongly believe that the damage pre-existed our use of the vehicle, but again it was of a type that they had told us they were not interested in previously. With this saga, the whole process of vehicle return lasted over 45mins, which I think is just part of the whole scam, because it just puts the pressure on the customer to settle up or risk missing a flight. Also cost me 200 euros for ridiculously minor damage which would not have cost that much to resolve and also I know they will never actually get rectified. Moving forward I need a copy of the excess invoice showing that Goldcar charged me 200 euros so that I can claim that against the separate excess insurance that I took out. This invoice was not provided to me at the time. I have asked Goldcar for this in my feedback to them, but if this is not readily forthcoming from them then I would ask you to follow up on my behalf. On a different note, I also noted that the next victim to be hauled up for excess damage was also British. A poor old lady who looked half frightened to death and, when I asked her, also seemed to have taken out her own insurance cover for excess charges. So from my own experience, and what I have subsequently read in the press, (wish I had read this before!!) I think that certainly people who have taken out their own insurance against excess charges are being targeted and perhaps this is more so British hirers!! Finally, I have given you a 1 rating in response to question 4 above. Something that, until this particular hire experience, I would never have done before. Quite the opposite in fact, and you will see from my hiring record that we have used you a lot over the years. In this instance, however, with the amount of negative feedback I have subsequently found out there in relation to Goldcar, I cannot think that you have not been aware of this and would therefore question why you would continue to put them forward as a hire option to your customers. Moving forward I need a copy of the excess invoice showing that you charged me 200 euros so that I can claim that against the separate excess insurance that I took out. This invoice was not provided to me at the time. As a closing point, I also noted that the next victim to be hauled up for excess damage was also British. " AT PICK OF THE VEHICLE (3RD JUNE 11:58)I NOTICED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE WAS NOT FULL WHICH I POINTED OUT TO THE GOLDCAR ATTENDANT AND THERE FORE I TOOK A PICTURE. THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS ALSO NOT WORKING WHICH I ALSO POINTED OUT TO THE ATTENDANT (EMANUEL) HE SAID IT WOULD BE FINE AND THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. ON RETURN I FILLED THE VEHICLE UP TO THE TANKS MAXIMUM BUT ON ASSESSING THE GAUGE IT SHOWED THAT THE TANK WAS NOT FULL AS ON PICK UP. THERE IS AN OBVIOUS FAULT HERE. I POINTED THIS OUT TO THE RETURNING ATTENDANT WHERE HE SAID HE NEED TO SEE PROOF OF THE FUEL RECIEPT WHICH YOU NOW HAVE. HE THEN WENT OFF TO CHECK WITH HIS MANAGER AND AFTER ABOUT 10MINS HE CAME BACK TO CONFIRM TO ME THAT EVERYTHING WAS OK AND THAT THE ISSUE WAS KNOWN ON THIS VEHICLE. I ALSO WENT INTO THE OFFICE TO CONFIRM THIS WHICH A MANAGER ALSO CONFIRMED I WAS GOOD TO GO. I THEN GET A LETTER DATED 10-06-2018 SAYING THAT I AM NOW TO BE CHARGED €58 FOR PENALTY FOR FUEL BREACH. I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU ARE LAWFUL HERE IN CHARGING ME THIS EXTRA PENALTY AND WILL REQUIRE A REFUND IMMEDIATELY. I WILL ALSO BE VISITING FARO IN 2 WEEKS SO IF THIS IS NOT RESOLVED THEN I WILL HAVE TO PAY A VISIT TO YOUR OFFICE AND SORT THIS MATTER OUT IN PERSON. IF YOU REQUIRE EVIDENCE OF THE FUEL RECEIPT OR PICTURES OF THE FAULTY FUEL GAUGES THEN PLEASE CONTACT ME. "
