We were supposed to pick up the car from Terminal 2 at Milan Malpensa but it was closed when we got there and we had to return to the terminal building and take a bus to Terminal 1. As a result we were late reaching our final destination. 2. There was no-one to report the pre-existing damage to the car that we were given. We tried but the only Hertz member of staff wasn't interested. Fortunately we took photographs, which was important because on returning the car Hertz accused us of damaging the car. There was a discrepancy on the Hertz itemised invoice and yours with regard to the pre-paid voucher. You charged us £270.49 for it. Hertz's invoice says €259.29 (which is £223.52). They say that they can't comment on the difference as you are a third party but my understanding from your website is that you are long-standing business partners. So it would be good if you can explain the discrepancy (of £46.97), especially as on your website you promise "unbeatable rates". So, in short the car wasn't where it should have been when we arrived. It was dirty inside and hadn't been cleaned. We were accused of damaging when we hadn't, and there is a significant discrepancy on yours and Hertz's pre-paid voucher. "

" When I arrived at 11am to pick up the car I had booked from Roma Termini from 10am, I was in a slow queue to get speak to the Hertz staff. After waiting for 30 mins in the queue, I found that the EV I had booked was not at the station but someone was fetching it and would arrive within 30 mins. 45 mins later, the EV arrived with 72% charge. The car park was dark, but I could see some big scratches so pointed these out to the attendant who wasnt really interested. The car had not been cleaned particuarly well. It wasnt until much later that I saw that most panels had quite a lot of minor scratches and scuffs on the allow wheels (far more than I would expect for a relatively new car). Hertz just didn't really seem too fussed that the car was really late, low on charge, not very clean and very scratched. I wonder whether they will add any additional charges now they have my credit card details. "

" Complaint – Hertz Case Reference 23285462 We have returned to the UK yesterday after 3 weeks in Italy hence the delay in submitting this complaint. There are 2 issues: 1. The car rental voucher provided a return address that was incorrect. The address quoted on the voucher is NAPLES CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION CORSO ARNALDO 171 - see attached voucher. However, having driven around the central station for over 1 hour trying various locations, being stopped and berated by the local police for driving the wrong way down a 1 system and narrowly avoiding missing our ferry to Ischia, we found someone who advised the actual address is Corso Meridionale 61. Even when we arrived at this location there was no obvious signage confirming we were in fact at the correct location. When returning the car and raising this issue with the employee checking the car in, they were simply dismissive of the whole issue and distress and inconvenience this had caused. Having driven in multiple countries around the world this is the 1st time we have experienced an issue returning the car which is simply due to the incompetence of providing us with incorrect information. My wife was in tears during this highly stressful period, especially given the the stresses involved in driving in the central of Naples along with the possibility we would miss our connecting ferry. It is totally unacceptable to provide information that is fundamentally incorrect but even worse that your employees show no empathy or compassion when raising the issue when returning the vehicle. If we had more time I would have pursued this more vigorously when returning the car. 2. When collecting the vehicle on the morning of the 21/7 due to a 4+ hour delay to our flight, we were again stressed and needing to depart quickly to again meet deadlines for our onward travel around Puglia. I advised the lady on the rental desk we already had excess insurance but she asked if we had roadside assistance cover. Not wanting to delay us further I accepted her offer of roadside assistance cover at 8 euros per day, albeit in hindsight if the vehicle was to breakdown then surely this is covered within the standard rental package. However, there has now been a charge of 150.06 euros to my credit card. Given the rental period was now 13 days and not 14, 8 Euro per day is 104 Euro. Please explain why the amount charged is greater then the price advised and please confirm that roadside assistance is not part of the standard rental terms regards the car having a fault etc. I expect you to look sympathetically at this complaint, especially given the significant stress and inconvenience caused and I would expect you to make an offer of compensation to reflect the severity of the issues experienced. " The Hertz Office in Spoleto has official stated opening hours. However there is no one at the location most of the time- only a large permanent notice stuck on the window with a telephone number on it. We arrived a few minutes early to pick up our vehicle. There was no one there. We called the number. We then waited almost an hour- standing in a dusty side road - for the Owner to turn up. His attitude was poor. When we dropped off the vehicle he did arrive on time but then immediately locked up and left. This is basically an unmanned office where the owner turns up when he needs to and then leaves. From a Customers perspective this is hopeless. "

" pickup station is quite far away from where it is supposed to be (it was Milan Central Station) - unlike pretty much all other rental company offices... without clear directions had to look for it for quite a while and then walk for perhaps 10-15 minutes from the station to get to the office. Also, the car that I have got, although quite new, was substantially worse than what i was thinking I have booked - very basic car with little luggage capacity and barely any functionality, poor exterior lights... And that was communicated to me as being an upgrade - imagine how worse it would have been if i was given what was supposed to be provided without the upgrade? (i was told it should be DR car - a brand I have never before heard/seen!). "

" We had to wait two hours to pick up the car as cars were unavailable (they were being washed allegedly!). Many people queueing for unavailable cars. The counter staff were as helpful as they could be taking into account the lack of cars. At the Gold Plus desk where you collect the car the employee was very unhelpful when we were unable to exit the car park because the Hertz issued ticket was invalid. He was actually very rude. To return the car finding the car park for return was difficult and no guidance given in the documentation. However, when we finally did locate the correct car park the employee there was extremely helpful and the return was quick and efficient "

" I always recommend yourselves to friends about booking as it is very easy and effortless and I have used you for over 15 years. I am not recommending Hertz. I took your extra insurance and have filled in the forms although this was a major pain for all the info they require but currently going down this route. "
" collection was going Ok until the lady asked about additional insurance and then remarked from the voucher that I had it already! My company card was then refused three times, this is the one I pay yourselves with and has a £10K limit. The only other card she could "make work" was a company Debit card and proceeded to process a deposit on this one. There was supposly no damage to the car apart from a couple of bits marked on the paperwork. However I found damage to the front wheel which I photographed before leaving. I then drove to a hotel parked in their empty underground car park and left again 3 days later to go back to the airport. The car was left unattended as it was 3.00 am and I left the keys in the drop box. When I got back to the office Hertz had sent a list of new damages to the car including the wheel I photographed before I left the airport. Some of the scratches were so excessive I would have had to drive through a hedge to get them. They have taken £326 off my card and what looks like a second payment pending which I am checking on. NOT HAPPY ABOUT BEEN RIPPED OFF "

I was expecting a modern Lancia ore similar, I got an older car with no auto locking, no sensors lots of dints and scratches and a dodgey gearbox. Dont think it was value for money at all. I paid Auto europe for my planned excursion to switzerland. but was charged again by Hertz for this. in fact we never actually crossed the border this 13 euro charge should be crdited back to my card. " We had booked to collect our car from Genoa Ferry Terminal at 10.30 on 24/6/22. When we got to the terminal the Hertz office was shut with a notice that it opened at 10.30. We waited and waited and eventually found out from a secuirty guard that there was a festival and that the office wasn't going to open as there was a festival. We then phoned Hertz at Genoa airport who told us that they knew about our booking and had informed Auto Europe a few days ago that the office would not be open but that they did not have our contact details as you had not passed them on. Whilst waiting for our taxi, I phoned you on your UK number. I spoke to someone and told him what had happened and he asked me to hold. After holding for about 10 minutes, I ahd to ring off as the taxi had arrived. I didn't receive a return call or email. I have attached the receipt for the taxi - I don't know yet how much the calls I and my wife made cost, and I reserve the right to claim the cost of those as well as the attached taxi receipt. I also require some compensation for the stress, wasted time and inconvenience that this I would like an explanation as to why we were not informed of the Ferry Terminal office closure and why no one returned my call on the 24th. In total that day I travelled 30mins in the vehicle, airport to venue, venue to hotel. 25/10 Returned vehicle in the morning to Pisa airport with oil warning message. Needed to add a second driver (Jack). I was told that if I could top up the oil they would add Jack for free. They then changed their mind and they would top up the oil, I would pay for additional driver in full. Its not my issue to sort the maintenance of the vehicle. Different vehicles take different oils, thats something I dont need to think about. Also €38 (additional driver cost) is considerably more than a canister of motor oil. Seems like they just made up the pricing as they went along. I had to get them to take another photo again of damage they hadnt listed the day before which I had highlighted. Drove from Pisa to Cormons. No warning light on journey or after show to hotel. 26/10 Saturday Its important to take note of the timings: 12:00 midday - Started drive from Cormons to Bologna. Oil warning light on again from start. Engine was smoking black smoke and you could physically smell burning oil. We pulled into a Risto services to assess. 13:22 Tried to contact Pisa rental office but automated line was in italian, I couldnt understand it. 13:25 Called 24h assistance who suggested I drove to the nearest Hertz branch, this was not an option. I wasnt going to risk breaking down outside of the safe area we were in at the rest stop. Breakdown was arranged. I wasnt properly advised what was happening other than a tow truck would arrive and take our vehicle. Originally they said to take a taxi - but to where??? I couldnt with the amount of luggage and passengers. 14:20 Breakdown truck arrived. We ended up riding in the vehicle to a garage in Padova. Breakdown engineers english and my italian didnt work. Again no real information. Vehicle is handed over to the garage. I'm passed between phone calls to Hertz and the breakdown engineer to various Hertz operators regarding next steps. However there was still a lack of information. This went on for 45mins while I exchanged paperwork at the garage. I was offered an option of a Fiat 500X. I refused based on suitability. 15:30 Last contact with Hertz was regarding a replacement vehicle again. I was twice offered a Fiat 500X. I explained that this was STILL unsuitable. This is a 5 seater vehicle and nowhere near a direct replacement for a 9 seater. I told them that unless they can provide a 9 seater or two Fiat 500X's then I would have to make other arrangements as I needed to be in Bologna asap. I never heard back on the two vehicle option from anyone. I was told to contact Pisa Hertz (vehicle pickup) or Verona Hertz (vehicle drop off) to arrange another vehicle. Not helpful. I was extremely clear that neither of these locations were suitable for my current location, nor for Saturday or Sunday given that I was dropped by breakdown in Padova. I would need a vehicle in Padova or at worst Bologna. They suggested a taxi to both rental locations - this is stupid. They had searched for a vehicle and none were available and they hadnt even confirmed a vehicle was available at this point at either location. The last information I received from Hertz was 15:30/16:00. Operator said he would send an email to Pisa and Verona to find me a vehicle and they would contact me asap. 20:50 By this point I had arranged with our colleagues at Robot Festival to collect us and we were now in Bologna. After total silence from Hertz since 15:30 I called to ask what they were doing to help and rectify the situation. (This was the phone call you helped me with) As you found out the only contact they had received between 15:30 and 20:50 was my phone call ushering them into helping me 5mins before we were transferred to Bologna rental office or whoever we spoke with, I dont even know. My biggest issues: Total lack of information once we started breakdown procedure. There was total silence from Hertz between 15:30/16:00 and 21:00. No calls, no messages, no updates, no advice and absolutely no solution. Had I not chased and contacted Hertz at 9pm on Saturday I could have effectively been left stranded at the garage with no information on how to source a new vehicle. The only reason I was able to get out of the situation was my own work. I wasnt advised that any costs incurred could be recoverable until I got to the rental station in Bologna. On the phone call on Saturday evening I reluctantly I had to accept an manual transmission Opel to replace the automatic Mercedes I booked. I am a right hand driver and automatic was another key reason I selected Hertz for my hire. This also was a downgrade vehicle from the Mercedes Vito I specifically requested with Hertz. If I wanted an Opel or Fiat I could have had one cheaper with another company. Additionally the fuel consumption on the Opel was terrible in comparison to the Mercedes. This Opel also had completely battered bodywork, I had to push the staff at Bologna rental office to take further photos of the damage to ensure I wouldnt get fucked over when it was returned, this was even worse than the Mercedes' damage. Whoever I spoke to on Saturday night prior to collecting at Bologna insisted that this kind of vehicle was rare and difficult to find - this is absolutely not my issue, I don't care. I've paid for a 9 seater vehicle, thats what I should receive regardless. If this was an issue for Hertz' fleet then they should have sourced a suitable direct replacement vehicle from another rental company to properly resolve the problem. This shouldnt of been down to me to sort out which I ended up doing through Robot. If Robot hadn't had their vehicle available we can argue that we may have missed our show and thus forfeited our show fee... we could provide a contract or show fee proposal for this if they request. - Overall this was a totally unacceptable response and their customer service is lacking in ability to hold up their side of the agreement. They also seemed to lack basic empathy for my situation. The most sympathetic staff I encountered were at Verona airport who had to bear the brunt of my frustration 2 days after the initial breakdown. They helped to discuss the issue but could not help me in terms of compensation. I spoke with Lara and Matteo. - I expect much higher level of service and customer care from a multinational company making millions in profit every year. It appears to be a situation where theyre happy to take customers money but not really help out when its needed. - My opinion is that the vehicle was not serviced between hires. Given that the vehicle had 10,000km a full service was nearly due (I've owned a Sprinter and Mercedes C Class, this is the manufacturers standard recommendation). If serviced and monitored between hires the issue could have been avoided entirely. - Their suggestion across all contacts I spoke with was to remove the drop off fee as compensation. I dont want a discounted rate. Ive lost out on more than €100. Basically I want to push for a full refund. We were left without our agreed vehicle for 21 hours, we missed our soundcheck (lets lie about this to better our case), there was real potential there for serious financial repercussions. Apologies to whoever has had to read this essay, but I'm absolutely appalled about how this was handled. "

" I am afraid that I perceived no value at all going through autoeurope. I paid £170 approx for a car that when I arrived cost a lot more for proper insurance. Hertz said that what had been paid to them was around £150 which was deducted from the overall bill which I had to pay locally, of over 400 euros. Also, when I had trouble calling the local Hertz to say we would be picking up later the we thought, I tried to contact you for assistance. The phone didn't answer and in reply to an e-mail I was given the number for the local Hertz that I had been trying .. with a cheerful "let us know if we can help". Which I had been doing. It was a very poor service. "

" Booking the vehicle through Auto Europe was a simple, straight forward experience. Selecting Hertz as the rental vehicle provider was an absolute NIGHTMARE !!! "

Even now, having dropped the vehicle off six days ago, I've received no documentation from Hertz to determine exactly how much the rental cost me! It turns out to be the exact location as pick-up, so try finding it at 06:00 in the morning in the dark was something I had to factor into my flight ETA! The drop-off office does not open until 08:00 ... WHAT! ... It's an airport for goodness sake! The vehicle was is an absolutely diabolical condition at pick-up. I complained to the Hertz staff who merely stated that a report with photo-images had been sent to my email address showing all the existing damage! Eh What! Even Hertz did not know what vehicle I would be provided until I arrived at the Hertz pick-up desk, so there was NO WAY of comparing the report images with the actual vehicle condition at pick-up. When I finally accessed my email and images during my 2-week Sicily trip, only then did I realize that on some - NOT ALL - of the existing damage (at pick-up) was documented! Regardless of photographs taken by me (before it rained) at pick-up, that point concerned me during the entire rental period, and remains a concern to this day! "

" Pick-up at Naples airport was very slow- over an hour. Even the courtesy vans to the car hire location took a very long time. Hertz seem to take too many bookings and do not have enough cars to service their customers' requirements. Our car had multiple scrapes and scratches which took time to verify with the paperwork - but this is Italy and roads are so narrow that scrapes are commonplace. However, it felt very amateurish in terms of the process. Amazingly though the staff were friendly and courteous despite the delays. Other companies did not have long queues so it is possible to get it right. Also the Hertz counter is shared with Thrifty and Dollar - all customers effectively in one queue, although there were many more Thrifty customers. This meant as a Hertz customer I was disadvantaged. "

" The counter staff were very good, the staff when we returned the car were very good. The HUGE problem was the almost 3 hour wait to pick up the keys. This wait could have been even longer if I hadn't seen the man in front of me with a ticket. Because of the vast number of people no signs saying you had to have a ticket were visible. It would have been quite easy to wait in the queue, only to reach the counter without a ticket. However, as I said, even with a ticket the wait was nearly 3 hours. " Two hours wait in the airport to get to a counter. Not even a hint of apology for the wait. Counter staff is slow and inefficient. Further delayed when getting the key in the parking space, staff there again is slow and inefficient. Not being able to explain that the car had a peculiar "automatic" gearbox, which had also a "manual" mode, where gears need to be shifter manually. The car was struggling most of the time to keep up with the average speed of the motorways traffic , clearly needed more power and more gears. "

" Overall a good experience but always dread drop off as staff tried to get me to pay for small damage to tyre. We looked over the car with a fine tooth comb before taking it as we always do and identified a couple of scuffs on the wheels which were only cosmetic but didn't notice a small damage area to the tyre wall close to the wheel scuff. I was confident that we hadn't even been near a kerb so any damage was here before taking possession. I am pleased to confirm that the senior person accepted this and we went on our way. Overall I feel Hertz are professional organisation and whilst not always the cheapest represent very good value. "

" Car provided was missing on windscreen wiper blade, and had no spare wheel. This became a problem when we had a flat tyre on a Sunday. We had no way of changing the wheel so had to call Breakdown Assistance. The car was then driven onto the lorry and as a consequence we have to pay for a new tyre. The staff at Hertz were fine and provided a replacement car immediately. But through no fault of our own we are having to pay for something which we could have fixed in an hour or two had there been a spare wheel. "

" I have dealt with Autoeurope for many years now and only on one occasion had cause to claim refundable excess and this was done smoothly. Always good value for money and I have always been satisfied with the service provided. "
" There is always a wait due to the number of people collecting hire cars. No matter what insurance I book with Autoeurope they ALWAYS try to get me to pay for more cover,by trying to convince me it is not enough cover. The person dealing with me got me to initial 3 places on the rental record to say I accepted the coverage and additional charges which was 21 Euros and another for 48 Euros plus location service charge. of 18% . So you can see how we get confused about these extra charges when we have booked all the cover we need with Autoeurope when booking the car. Hertz should have all the information regarding what Insurance cover I have and not require me to pay for more. This needs sorting out. I am still not sure if this is on top of the cover I agreed with you so I am hoping it was all included. Perhaps you could clearly state on the voucher that no further cover is required for them to see. No one checked the condition of the car on collection with me but later sent me an email re the condition of the car, which by then I was on the motorway . The car was not as clean as I expected, but not dirty enough to refuse to take it. The Lancia was a good car but under powered.Also the air conditioning was not very good. On returning the car I got a member of staff to confirm the petrol tank was full and I had returned the car in the same condition as I received it,and got them to sign my hand written note to this effect. I know people have had money taken from their credit cards after returning home and it is too late to do anything about it. Customers should have something in writing when returning cars to avoid this situation. Over all Hertz were fine to deal with and good value for money. I do feel the level of car when booking should include an engine power,like 1.2cc for example as well as 4 door and air conditioning etc. So hopefully I should not have any money deducted from my credit card as the car was returned in the same condition I received it. I hope you find my feed back useful and look forward to dealing with Autoeurope again in the future. "

" There were 9 of us travelling and we hired 3 x cars. All booked through Auto Europe. I had recommended auto Europe to others as I had used the service before. One of the cars was booked with Europcar. When we got there they told us the booking had been cancelled and they didn't have a car for us. We spoke to someone in the US office of Europe car. They told us they weren't prepared to help. We then spoke with someone in the UK. They tried to find the problem but were unable to determine if the issue was Auto Europes or Europcars. Again, no one took responsibility and as we had booked through Auto Europe, I would have expected you to come up with a solution. As it was we had to proceed without a car and hire a car directly from another rental care company later in the trip. "

It changes a lot according to the airport you arrive. Sometimes in the building, sometimes in a different office, sometimes walking distance, sometimes via a shuttle... etc "

" As my flight on the 19th of August was cancelled I called few times the Customer care speaking to different people. I just wanted them to amend the voucher starting from the 20th of August as Hertz confirmed that they will keep the car for me but the voucher needed to be amended. I have spoken to few people such Adrian, Edoardo and Cristina (she was not very nice, more training is needed) but none of them was able/willing to change the voucher so I have to make a new booking. "

" I spent time from my holiday and petrol driving to Hertz. The customer service member of staff was extremely helpful in Rende. I would expect some compensation for the inconvenience this has caused me. "

In fact it was the same with an offer of a marginal upgrade at a substantial extra cost and gentle pressure to pay for exorbitantly priced excess insurance despite having my own. At drop off I would prefer that the car was checked in my presence so that I could be assured that the car was unmarked during my rental. Instead the keys were returned and I was told I could go if I had no issues to report. "

" Took 3 hrs to sort the hire car. Initially the kiosk told us to go straight to the parking as we already had a booking. Very hard to find then told to go back to terminal kiosk. Waited an hour to be served - operating a ticket service. Eventually got to the car which had lots of damage they hadn't recorded. Waited 40 mins whilst they photographed and recorded it. When I pulled the car forward to put luggage in boot found panels in boot missing with wires hanging out etc. They then agreed to change vehicle which meant redoing all the paperwork. I had 5 disabled and 4 over 80 who had to wait with us in the heat without any apologies or sympathy. On return was made to park the minibus in a a very small confined space with no assistance. Overall extremely poor service. "

" We had booked a large estate car with a large boot, 9 months prior to our trip to ensure we got something large. We were travelling with our two small daughters and lots of luggage and we had an onward journey with more things from a different location. When we arrived we were told we had been upgraded and were given keys to a car with a boot space much smaller and so returned to the desk to query why. We were then told that we had been upgraded based on the fact that the only station wagon they had had been returned earlier with a damaged wing mirror and so we couldnt have a larger boot space car. We ended up trying to fit our luggage in to no avail, and then returning to the desk again whereby we were asked if we could "fold some seats down" to fit the luggage in, despite it being incredibly apparent that we had two small children with their individual car seats. This problem cost us two full hours of our holiday with two small children having to wait around in the heat whilst they tried to resolve the issue for us. In the end, 5 members o staff managed to remove he top and bottom parts of the boot space to try and help us for our luggage in, which we eventually did. I would never, EVER deal with Hertz again, their service (excluding the drop off) was inept and unprofessional in the extreme. "

" RE -- Auto Europe Voucher UK 4887784-1 Hertz Reservation J07415970B7 I booked Hertz car hire through autoeurope at Cagliari Airport for pick up on 14th July . Flight information was provided as requested and clearly shown on voucher. Unfortunately the flight was delayed and didn't arrive until 12:30am. I fully appreciate that office hours at Hertz were clearly stated as up to midnight. However I was very surprised (and disappointed) to find the hertz office closed. It was noticeable that many of the other car hire companies (less "reputable" and often much cheaper) had stayed open after office hours due to the late arrival of the flight. The result was that myself and four passengers were stranded at 1am in the morning at Cagliari Airport miles from our destination. I booked a Ford Grand C Max which clearly states that it was for 5 people with 2 larges cases and 2 small. There were 4 of us with this amount of luggage and I was rudely told I had booked too small a car and would only get a 'free upgrade' if I paid the extra insurance that was not covered in my hire. I was given a Renault Scenic and can not discern the difference between that and a Ford C Max but was forced to take out extra insurance and an airport tax of at least €70 that my booking and voucher clearly stated was included. If I did not take the extra insurance I was told that a few thousand euros would be stopped against my card, despite my inclusions clearly showing that I had only to have €200 deposit taken. This was ignored and when I queried it was told I was a difficult customer who did not speak Italian! I felt threatened into my 'upgrade' and very large extra payment and would like some redress for the stress this gave my travellers and I, alongw ith a refund of the extra airport tax that 'wasn't included' despite my voucher stating it was. But driving in Sicily is terrifying, especially so with a pristine vehicle on an island where every single other car seems to have some form of damage. We survived the onslaught until the very last day of our holiday, when a driver came round a bend on the wrong side of the road, necessitating a swerve to avoid him - and resulting in a paint chip to the front bumper and a kerbed alloy wheel. I'm well familiar with all of the online horror stories about car rental companies charging a fortune for minor damage - but the extra cost invoiced was just 130 Euro - pretty much the real, actual cost of those types of repair. Very relieved at how reasonable they were, and happy that we booked through yourselves with a major international rental company. 100% all round, thanks. "

" Tried to get me to sign an initial condition report without letting me examine the vehicle; the vehicle in fact had undocumented damage. Then on my way to the airport to return the car I crashed it, damaging two panels near front wheel. Probably drivable but dash board was showing mysterious error messages so I called roadside assistance just to be safe. After 26 phone calls with Hertz and their proxies a tow truck came and took the vehicle - no paperwork or anything - and left me behind with all my bags 90km from my destination. I missed my flight while all this was happening. Had to make my own way to Rome (because the roadside assistance company weren't clear on whether Hertz would reimburse me for a cab, and Hertz were not answering their phone or emails) and pay for a hotel and a new flight. I'd call this a debacle verging on a fiasco, no? "

When I asked about changing the driver's name to my wife's, as she had decided to drive instead, they refused and said we had to do a new booking, costing €632! Online the price was £88. When I told them I would do it online they refused to release the car until the following morning. They could see I had just landed with my wife and 3 young children aged between 1 and 6, it was 11pm at night, so they thought they would take advantage of a vulnerable family/situation. So I could only have a car there and then for the €632 price. I refused, got a lift, booked another car online and returned and picked it up the next day, with my wife driving instead. Con artists. I will be making a formal complaint and writing reviews online. I've lost the £200 of the original booking because they refused to change the driver's name, however then trying to con a family is disgusting. "

I was offered a different auto which I accepted but was subsequently broken. The final car was a complete wreck - at the check out area the technician wrote (in Italian) "all parts of the car damaged". 3) It wasn't the car I ordered. I wanted a small car for 2 people driving around the small mountain roads and villages in Abruzzo. I got a big Renault Scenic. 4) The staff were rude. When we finally said we'd had enough they just shrugged and said "not my problem". I couldn't believe that. 5) The car got a blow out which I had to pay €120 to fix. I believe the tyre was probably faulty before we picked it up. 6) Only one headlight worked 7) There wasn't any water in the windscreen water reservoir. 8) 5, 6, & 7 confirm that the car wasn't checked. 9) They called the wreck they gave me an upgrade - clearly I have "mug" written on my forehead - it had 100k+ miles and was damaged on every panel including the roof. 10) This is the type of service I would not expect even from a back street rental firm. Basically an absolute disgrace! 11) Why didn't I complain at the time? I did - no one was interested. It was just pure chaos. And after 3 hours (and a missed lunch booking) I just wanted to get going. We had had enough and basically things weren't getting better and no one cared or was taking responsbility. All in all an appalling experience. 12) Will the feedback experience be any better or is it just a pointless box ticking exercise?? I have provided feedback directly to Hertz but am not expecting to hear anything - like the question in a resturant "is everything ok for you?" - when actually they don't really want to hear things are terrible... 13) As a Hertz Gold customer would I book with them again - will I share my experience on social media - it all depends on the response to my feedback... " As I mentioned before, I paid the additional insurance when I booked on Autoeurope website, but when I arrived to collect the car, the rental company said the insurance I had does not cover the first £1600 of the ( damages, accident cost or of the car stolen) I have to pay the first £1600 and Autoeurope will pay the rest! And the rental car agent ( Hertz) told me in order to get the additional insurance I have to pay £39 per day ( I paid) I don't think Autoeurope are clear when they market there extra insurance, i read Autoeurope policy again and they never mentioned the £1600 fees that the customer have to pay when book the car with the additional insurance! "

" We have used you on all of our recent trips abroad, we like the ease of booking, the opportunity to choose a rental company and the added value from your insurance options. We chose Hertz from your list of providers as we felt that we would get a good quality car to rent from a household name like Hertz. We booked a 7 seater as we were a party of six. Once the booking was confirmed we checked in online with Hertz as directed, and I became a Hertz Gold Card member. Neither saved time or provided additional benefit on this rental. Gold Card Holders benefit from an additional driver at no extra cost. We were told we'd have to pay 12€ per day for this simply because we'd booked through AutoEurope. We declined and stuck to one driver. I was given the keys to a Ford Galaxy and told where to find it. Having located the car we found damage not noted on the paperwork so we had to get a Hertz employee to change the paperwork. It wasn't particularly clean either. We eventually loaded up our luggage and set off. We had only driven a few metres when it became apparent that there was a serious issue with the brakes! Another Hertz employee tried the car and agreed. We were sent back into the building to get another set of keys. Surely Hertz should carry out pre rental checks, not the customers? I asked if it were possible to have an undamaged car but was told "no"! The second car had clearly been in an accident as both nearside doors were very badly dented and scuffed. There were more marks around the car, not noted until we bought them to the attention of the guy from Hertz. It always strikes me as odd that rental companies are fairly blasé about car condition when you collect but less so when the car is returned? The car performed well for our trip and was nice to drive, but it was in very poor condition and not what you'd expect from Hertz. At nearly £300 for a weeks rental, I don't think 'undamaged and properly valeted' is a big ask. If our hotel room had been in a poor state we'd have demanded another. With the car, we had no option, we had been travelling since the early hours and were keen to get to our hotel to begin our holiday. For me, having a nice car to tour around in is part of the holiday and in this regard Hertz fell short. If I was happy with a banger I'd have found one elsewhere and saved a few £'s in the process. This complaint is not aimed at AutoEurope, but I feel that feedback on how your rental partners treat your customers is vital. I'd be interested to read your responses to this. "

" Took 1.5 hours to get to see agent at pick up desk. Told no compact automatics available and were offered an upsell at cost of several hundred euro in order that we not have to wait for a car to be available- we refused and an automatic was suddenly available, but alao an upsell as it was a convertible. We were then pressured to accept upsell on gps- again refused several times and were given the "upsell" at no extra charge. The gps was unusable as the desk staff changed language to Spanish from Italian rather than to English and we were unable to change it successfully ourselves. This was confirmed by desk staff upon our return, but they would not refund the cost of the gps despite it never being used. We were given a 10% discount voucher for our next rental which will certainly not be with Hertz. We were not provided with a map of where to drop the car off and due to construction at airport we were driving for 45 minutes searching for a way into the lot. We missed our flight as there was an accident on the highway as well, so our two hour window became one, which was depleted by searching for the drop off access point. "

" I made an error with my booking. I turned up one day early for the car. The sales person told me that I could not have a car and there was nothing they could do. Very very unhelpful - actually no help at all. I went to the Avis counter and they were so helpful and sorted out a new rental for me. I realise it was my error but to not have any refund was bordering on criminal. The car that I did not pick up would have been used by someone else and therefore the company have been paid twice for the one car. This is illegal in the USA. "

Further, we had booked a compact vehicle suitable for the narrow lanes where we were staying, but the car we received was a huge Renault Scenic, which made driving round narrow lanes far more stressful than it needed to be. We understood the petrol would be full to full, but they charged us for petrol on pickup so we didn't refill. " I booked Hertz as it was advertised as pick up full, return full. At the desk they had added on their fuel option automatically which I told her I didn't want. I wanted to return the car full. Eventually get to the car and find it half full. Car had also 90K kms on it. When to the desk at the car area and said I had wanted a full car. They sent me inside again to the initial desk. Asked for a car that was full and she kept saying just take a photo of the level on the tank and leave it back at the same level - definitely not pick up full and return full. Eventually they gave me a different car which was full. The fuel option purchase not disappeared from the receipt. The new car was covered in dents and scratches with major damage on the roof (which we didn't notice at the time as it was lashing). The oil service light was on and the parcel shelf was missing. Nothing was marked up on the sheet. I reported all this to the staff but they were not interested - just said to take photos. I rented with Firefly one year and that was a bad experience. You end up getting Firefly cars and fuel policies with Hertz but because you choose Hertz, you expect more. When we returned the car, we had to pay for the additional driver. Advertised on your site at approx. £10 a day. They tried to charge 95 euros plus 40 euros or tax. Eventually removed the tax as the girl on the counter hadn't explained it to us. Whole experience felt like a rip off from start with the fuel to finish with the tax on the additional driver. "

" Nightmare vredit card couldent be used brcause i hadent used it in italy before. So couldent pay in cash or use debit card. Cots me 100 pound on taxi. So car was paid for and couldent use it. " Not really Auto Europe's fault but you need to check that the companies you use have the cars people book or similar cars available. We have wasted time on previous hires too because of wrong cars and cars not prepared correctly for customers. "
" Car which we booked was not available and nothing in the same category, So can I ask what is the point of pre-booking a car??? Given an aternative car and not told it was automatic instead of manual until we went to car park to collect it so we refused it. Only other car available was much bigger and my wife wasn't comfortable driving it. Luckily a car came back from a rental whilst we were trying to resolve the matter so we took it although it was flithy as we had already wasted an hour and half. Last hire car we had from Hertz earlier in the year had a rear seat not bolted down and we had to get another car which had a lot of body damage so looked scruffy. Not what we expected from a well known hire company!! "

" I paid extra because I have been stung by cheap car hire companies in the past, this time I thought I would go with a more reputable, expensive brand. However, it was just as bad, if not worse. Plus I had extra ordinary circumstances when my wifes passport stolen and we had to cancel the first booking, I reordered with Auto Europe, despite you not even offering some discount on the 2nd booking. "
" 1. The que at the airport was 2-3 hours and the staff were very inefficient. 2. The charges for the child seat was more than quoted and what I feel was unjust for the service provided. 3. The service at the pickup counter was chaotic and poor, there were a lot of angry people waiting around with no real order. 4. The car was damaged which I was told not to worry about. 5. On return I was told that I had damaged the car (which I noticed on pickup and was told not to worry about), and only wasn't charged because I had picture evidence. 6. The return drop off was slow and caused us to rush for our flight. 7. I have now received a charge in Italian which I can't read and have no idea what is about but assume it has just been taken from my card?! "

" Your prices don't accurately reflect the true rental cost. And your section about "the driver details" is irrelenvent as when you pass this data to herts they ignore it and use the details of the booker instead, then charge to add an additional driver. "
" Couldnt change the driver, instead forced us to pay additional 80 euros to add another driver (We only needed 1) - this was desplite the fact we specified the driver during booking, but apparently we had to have the booker as the main driver. Additionally it took over 2 hours for them to see us and provide the car - the queues were rediculous. There were also several hidden charges not made clear to us at the start. "

They offered me a choice of cars, and made sure they identified options that were big enough for my family and our luggage. The car could have been cleaner, and the wheels were very scuffed, but otherwise it was fine. Getting a booster seat for my daughter was easy. The only negative is that we were in a rush to get to the airport so returned the tank half full, yet they charged for a full tank of fuel, which is a little underhand. "

" Contacting Auto-Europe and Hertz at the beginning of our holiday, to inform of a delayed flight, was a disgrace. I attempted to contact both parties on multiple occasions without success. All I gained was a telephone bill for £85 for my efforts. A reimbursement for this would go someway to help with this terrible rental experience. "
" I was not able to verify the condition of the car against the Hertz condition paperwork as it was late at night and the car was wet following rainfall. Early on Sunday morning (5th August), I checked the Hertz condition paperwork and noted an "x" to indicate damage around the passenger front wing. When I checked, I could not see any notable damage on the panel indicated, but I did find a minor scuff on the driver side wing/bumper area, so I assumed a mistake had been made on the paperwork. When I returned the car, Ciro, your attendant, was extremely unhelpful and did not want to acknowledge our point of view that there was a mistake on the Hertz condition document, as no damage was caused in our rental period. We would describe your staff on this occasion as rude and arrogant. I am a Hertz member and this is the first time this kind of incident has ever happened to me. I specifically booked with Hertz, the most well known reputable car hire company, so I could avoid this kind of situation more associated with cheaper car hire companies. Now I have a bill for 185 euros for damage I have not caused. Please review this case and cancel the charge, as no damage was caused to this car during our rental period. "

" The Hertz pick-up area at Rome Ciampino is very poorly lit. I collected the car (which had a large number of existing minor dents and scrapes) after dark and it was almost impossible to check all damage in the pouring rain. The drop-off area had no rubbish bin - I had to dump my remaining rubbish on the ground beside the car as there was nowhere else to put it. Car had a large number (10+) of minor scrapes and pings. Big plus was that there were a number of different cars I could chose from (I happened to want a Diesel and this was the only one available!) "

We stopped using SatNav on second day as it continually sent us to incorrect destinations. We relied on Google Maps but was charged more than 145 Euro for it plus added taxes when returning car. " The worst experience of my life. Ruined my holiday. I pre booked the car but still had to wait over 3 hours to get the vehicle. Not sure why it wasn't ready for the requested time. Then the counter staff said I was not fully comp and had to pay 161 euros to get extra insurance to cover any damages. Then I was given the wrong vehicle which was an estate and I am unable to drive such big cars. After arguing for another 30mins they said that is all they had. The car was filthy. And as I am driving off. The car had no fuel. Which meant I had to return the car back. Unload all my luggage again and wait another 30mins. They then gave me a small car. Some how they seemed to have found one. Not sure why they couldn't't given me one of these initially. From the time of getting to Hertz to leaving and starting my holiday it had been over 4 hours. This defeated me coming early to Italy as it was a surprise trip for my Fiancee 30th Birthday. It had put an extremely sour mood in us. "

" Auto Europe had an admin meltdown and booked the car in the wrong name, this caused a six hour hold up to getting the car and a huge problem with over ten calls to your hot line at huge personal cell phone cost. What a waste of a day of our holiday. However it did get resolved by one helpful staff member, although the earlier staff member was hopeless. "
