This car also has a non-standard handbrake which took me 4 days to work out how to properly use (zero guidance given, my assumption would be this should be obvious and intuitive for a rental). " Booking the car through auto Europe was a fairly easy process. Getting to speak with someone at Hertz was not. Our flight was delayed and I wanted to let Hertz know so we wouldn't lose our booking. I eventually rang auto Europe and the lovely chap I spoke to sorted it all for me. "

" Auto Europe provided a competitive hire car experience... it's still extremely expensive compared to pre-Covid and I still believe the hire car, travel agencies and hotels are still clawing back money from those who are now prepared to travel. However Hertz provided an efficient pick-up service at Faro Airport, with three reps staffing the kiosk. I was provided with an almost brand new Ford Kuga. As usual I carried out a very close check of the body work, wheels, tyres and windshield.... Boring and square I know, but hirers take care, because if you don't cover the bases you run the risk of it costing £100s when you get home. Take photos of all 4 sides and particularly of any existing damage. Thankfully there was no hard sell, of taking further insurance packages ( I had already taken top protection via autoeurope) I opted for the cross border fee €25 and the motorway toll device €15. The car went well and we had no issues over the 9 days. But the return process particularly at Faro airport always feels like being prepared for a battle and you need to be on your mettle....having been through the process over 20 times over the last 30 years, I can only say to any potential renter... BEWARE. This time I was waved into a parking bay by the Hertz returns Rep, just as another car was pulling out... good job I didn't take any notice of him otherwise we'd have collided. ( I thought, well that's an ominous start) We collected our bags and the rep said " is it full" referring to the petrol tank, I replied yes. He had a quick look around the car and said "ok you go". No receipt, no signature.... Nothing... never ever leave a car rental with no paperwork or confirmation that the return rental was In Order, you will be sorry when you get home. I went straight to the hire desk, and demanded a print off and signature that the returned vehicle was in order, which Hertz did. I've hired cars in many European countries and in the US, only here at Faro airport does there seem to be a policy of trying to hoodwink, prise or trick customers into paying out extra money. My advice... stick to the major brand rentals, but I've had issues with Avis and Europcar... be very careful with the local rentals, pay attention to the paperwork and take those photos before driving away. It's not what you want to be doing when starting your holiday, but taking an extra 10 minutes at the start can save you loads of hassle and cash at the end. "

" On arrival at Porto airport there was no one on the Hertz desk and no one answered any of the phone numbers I tried. Eventually I and other customers worked out ourselves where to get the shuttle bus. At the depot, we upgraded to an automatic but it had to be a hybrid. The clerk said it would be the same price. However it was not made clear that it was for the basic fee and didn't include extras. He also said it would not be necessary to bring the car back with a full tank of petrol. We started driving to our destination about 50 miles away and I soon heard a clicking noise when accelerating. I thought it was because I wasn't familiar with the car. The noise got progressively worse and power was noticeably dropping when going uphill The petrol was full so I switched to that. The problem continued and the warning malfunction light came on. I manged to stop the car on a hill pulling over to a layby. I called roadside assistance and the operator was helpful but it was very hard to give her the location. After about 20 mins she said she had ordered a taxi to take us back to the airport, and a tow truck to pick up the car, It tool two hours for the taxi to arrive and another aldf an hour for the tow truck., It was an extremely hot day and we had a nine year old child with us. At the depot I asked for an manual petrol car as per my initial booking. I asked if there could be some compensation. The supervisor was called and initially wasn't very helpful. She said rental cars aren't checked mechanically between hiring and that cars breaking down was normal, and asked if my car in the UK ever broke down. I said never because I always have it serviced. I think it very dangerous to have cars going out unchecked mechanically and I thought Hertz prided itself on reliable service which is why it's not cheap. Because we lad lost so much time, she agreed to waive the first day's basic rental of £30 (not including all the extras). The car we got was mechanically sound but smelly. We were charged for the toll meter but we didn't have one in the second car. The final invoice is very hard to understand, it is in Portuguese and confusing. Im glad we returned it with a full tank of petrol - Hertz would have charged us 30cnets a litre more than we paid at Auchan. My main concerns are the potential danger, the very poor customer service, the poor communication, the unclear extra charges. Never again. "

" I was persuaded to upgrade to a more powerful car due to the number of mountains on the island, and as it happened this was a reasonable thing to do. I was told the cost would be Euro 30 i.e. Euro 10 per day. It would have been cheaper to book the upgraded car originally but that was my decision. When I came to pay at the end I was told the bill was Euro 40.57. This was 30 + credit card handling fee 3.25 + tax at 22%.. No one mentioned the latter 2 items when I booked. The amount involved is not large in real terms but to have to pay 35% more than was agreed is a con, and I will not be using Hertz again in a hurry. "
