However, the young man helping us with the second booking seemed very disinterested and we were provided with a very old car that made quite a concerning noise when braking. " I have used autoeurope for many years and mostly my experience was positive (including my latest rent in Italy in July this year). Hopefully the Iceland problems were just a matter of bad luck. "
" Counter staff was not particularly efficient (they may want to shorten their conversations with each other while their customers are waiting), but that was rather minor inconvenience, my next point is a bit more serious. One rather obvious thing required while renting a car in Iceland is good tires. That was not the case for us, the tire tread was barely above the legal limit, one of the tires leaked and required daily pumping up. Roadside assistance recommended was not particularly useful but very expensive, they charged £70 (nonrefundable!) just to "open the case". I decided against using the service as the next step was to somehow fix leaking tire (not to replace it) for something like £170. "

" I accidentally booked the car for a day later than my flight. The counter staff was not very helpful and just gave me a flyer with a number to call to request for the car to be picked up in the city centre rather than the airport. I called this number countless times over the following two days and tried all the other numbers I could find online and was automatically redirected to road assistance every time. Even the very kind people at the front desk of the hotel I was staying at tried it and couldn't get through. I had to pay for a cab to go all the way back to the airport and when I mentioned this to the person behind the Avis/Budget counter they couldn't care less and didn't apologize or explain. The purple behind the counter for other companies were a lot more helpful and sympathetic and actually tried to help us. "

" I booked a Hyundai i30 estate (or similar) as we were 4 people with camping equipment (lots of luggage). They didn't have an estate car but said I was bring 'upgraded' to a dacia duster. The boot space of an i30 estate is approx 600litres, whereas the dacia was 400litres. It wasn't big enough, so our children had to have rucksacks on their laps when we were driving. Budget also insisted that I had to pay for a tank of fuel (at vastly nflated prices compared with local garages) and to hand the car back empty. It was a complete rip off. I had to do this, despite my car hire voucher saying the rental was to collect and drop off the car full of fuel. "

He then started loading the van by piling bags on top of one another so I had to ask him to stand our large suitcases up or all of our contents would have been absolutely squashed. We had to wait a very long time at the check-in and whilst there, had to watch another customer in tears over the way they treated her when she returned the vehicle (I don't know the details so cannot comment further) which demonstrated their lack of awareness of customers as they were totally unsympathetic and didn't even offer any privacy. Whilst this was a cheap quote, it lost its value for money when we were frightened into taking the superior insurance - which was another £300 for 10 days - as it was clear they were unsympathetic to customers. When we were taken to our vehicle I was shocked by the poor condition (and was annoyed about the additional insurance - it's clear they don't actually claim on the insurance!). One rear light was taped in place, there was no back parcel shelf, the rear number plate was adrift, there were bumps and scratches all over and one of the boot holders was loose but, worst of all, an engine light was constantly on (which they assured us was 'no problem' and we could continue). To be fair, the vehicle drove okay, despite the brake lights occasionally issuing a warning, which only went off when we restarted the car. The only truly positive experience was our return where we dealt with a lovely man (from Poland) who was friendly and efficient and a pleasure to work with. "

" My experience with Auto Europe was pretty good, the website was easy to use and a competitive price was offered. The excess insurance was also competitive but this didn't stop the car hire company trying to sell me their own product on pick up - it would be helpful if Auto Europe could advise the car hire company that the customer has already taken out this cover to avoid the hard sell at the car hire pick up desk. I would have rated Auto Europe higher had not have changed my booking a few days before travel - I had chosen a car hire company where I could pick up at the airport but this was changed to pick up off airport via a shuttle bus. When I asked to change to a hire company where I could pick up at the airport I was advised this was possible but at the current price which was higher than I had already paid - I would have expected the price paid to be honoured as this was a change made by Auto Europe not me; I kept my existing booking. " The pick up procedure took ages with one person on the desk at the off airport Payless depot, I estimate a wait in the order of 30 minutes. There were two other parties in front of mine. The focus seemed to be on selling additional insurance rather than getting people into their hire cars and on their way. The tactics used to sell the insurance were dubious with tales and pictures of wind and sand damage - I wasn't asked whether I already had excess insurance (which I had already taken out through Auto Europe) and when I said I had I was advised it wasn't as good as the Payless (Avis) insurance but I declined the Avis insurance anyway. We were given a car from the group above the one we had booked with no extra charge but the condition of this vehicle wasn't great with dents and scratches on the outside and not very clean on the inside. It turned out that one headlight did not work and there was a steering vibration above 80kph (both of which were reported on drop off). Drop off was quite efficient once I was informed there was no need to go into the office (after having gone into the office!) as there we representatives checking cars in the car park but we hadn't been approached. Subsequently I have realised there was an additional charge on my hire agreement for what appears to be something called RSN which I have emailed Payless (Avis) about as I don't recall being advised of or agreeing to this - I am awaiting a reply from them. " I booked at vehical class deliberately to ensure that I could travel on F class roads. Several weeks after initally confirming the booking Auto Europe advised there had been a mistake and the original car I had booked was unavaiable but they had arranged another through Avis at the same class and at the same cost. (It was a Suzuki Vitara as oppossed to a Dacia Duster). On picking up the vehicle from Avis it had messages all over the vehicle that it could not be taken on F roads. This is completely contrary to why I hired the class of vehicle that I did. "

The manager informed me that I had been incorrectly advised by the counter staff but eventually agreed to reduce the cost to approximately £17 which I accepted but was still more than the £14 I was originally advised. In addition the billing process included other charges of approximately £30 which were not seperately detailed or explained. After several requests for the nature of the charges and being initally told this could not be provided I was told it was for use of tunnels but could not be told for which tunnels or how many uses. Eventually we collectively determined it was for two uses together with additional administration charges for non payment within 3 hours of use. The whole process took approximately 30 minutes to resolve and left me very disatisfied. "

We were told we wouldn't be charged for fuel if the car was returned with a full tank yet £77 was taken from my credit card which I'm still trying to get back. Our Hyundai i10 had 90,000 miles on the clock and a cracked windscreen when we picked it up – which is very dangerous, especially with the high winds in Iceland. Not surprised that this damage wasn't marked on the contract when we picked up the key as no one would accept this! "

They would not let us speak with management or escalate the complaint and they ended up putting the phone down with us. 6. We were totally fooled into hiring a 'Budget' vehicle and they totally shafted us on insurance - totally unfair and unreasonable company and the worst experience I have ever had in my life. "

Unfortunately, in Iceland, this is the exception to the rule, as sand and ash cover is not covered by auto-europe, and required an additional 50%+ charge at the counter. "

" Even though I had intentionally purchased the extra insurance with Auto Europe, and I showed the voucher to the counter staff, we were told at the counter that we had no insurance and should not take the vehicle without upgrading to Avis's insurance. This ended up costing us an additional £415 for the rental period!! Almost the same as the original price paid. In addition, I was not given a chance to actually read the contract I was signing, as the agent kept scrolling through all the text on the ipad and only stopped for me to sign on the line at the bottom. This lead to me unintentionally and unknowingly agreeing to be charged in GBP rather than local currency, which increased the price of the additional insurance and 2nd driver by £35 because Avis add their own 7% conversion fee on top!! Not once was I made aware of this, and I am furious! I have complained to Avis about this, but was just told that I'd signed the agreement and that's it. I feel totally ripped off and will NEVER rent through Avis again. I'm also in two minds about my Auto Europe experience, as I was under the impression that I would only have to pay for the additional driver at the counter, nothing else. "

The lady told me it doesn't cover Sand storms and that they were very likely in Iceland - there obviously wasn't one. So I paid them an extra £110 which I really didn't want to. They did a hard sell. In addition, we were given a Toyota Hilux with cover on the pickup section, and the area in the back was very dirty and hadn't been cleaned properly. So not ideal for our and our kid's luggage. For example, explain toll roads, lights must be on at all times etc. In many countries road tolls can be paid online up to 24 hours after going through the booth. They took over 40 mins trying to tell me I'd booked two cars when it was obvious I hadn't as they could see my confirmation email on my phone. (Their warnings "oh especially if you're visiting the South with the flying Ash" is scare mongering. I had to spend 5 mins going around the car in pouring rain to check all the damaged bodywork (photographing chips not on their form) The car itself wasn't particularly clean inside & getting it into any gear was a constant struggle for the whole 4 days, from someone who drives over 20,000 miles a year. " Cheapest price for auto car I could find Car was brand new and cheap to fill. Reliable for our trip but could not drive on some of the roads as they were gravel or had lots of potholes. There was no one at the airport to meet us when we initially arrived and so had to wait around for half an hour or so for someone to turn up with the shuttle. Waited in line at the Procar shop to pick up our car for approx 2 hours. All staff were very determined to upsell on insurance which was very expensive. Not necessary in summer I think. Drop off was fairly efficient as it was 4:30am but we had to wait for the shuttle to fill up with other people before they would take us to the airport. Not great if you're in a rush for a flight. "

Secondly I had no idea what they had done to the car after it was returned to them. I took the utmost care of their whilst it was in my charge. They told us to read the small print of the rental contract rather than talk us through it. On returning the car with a full tank, we were told that the fuel gauge was showing not quite full (although it looked the same to us as when we picked it up). We declined their offer to fill it up for us for a 'small' charge (I think they charge 5000 krona plus any additional fuel, which was written in the small print). We backtracked to the nearest fuel station where we put in just over 1 litre of diesel to top the car up to brim full! The fuel gauge did not move. "

We went back to the office and the staff tried and couldn't work it. They gave us a portable one for free, but it wasted a good 30 minutes to get sorted. I did not opt for any extra insurance and there was no hard sell and no trying to find fault with the car upon return, as I have read about other companies, so, yes, I was happy with Procar and would recommend them. " ProCar was excellent. We had a Hyundai i20 from them which was clean and well presented. We were ran through the usual bodywork checks before and after the hire. They were very clear about their policies and ready to answer any questions we had. The staff were friendly and very helpful, and included a GPS unit even thought it wasn't part of our hire. " The car was not road worthy. The windscreen wiper fell off when it was first switched on in a snow storm in the middle of no where! The passenger door whistled so loudly and had a massive draft. The boot wouldn't open. Generally, the car was in a sorry state. It also hadn't been cleaned properly and there was chewing gum between the seats - nice! "

" Procar were a mixed bag. They did not turn up for over an hour after we had landed despite us telling them our flight number. However, it was a young guy who picked us up and he was friendly and apologised and gave us a sat nav as a way of apology which was great. We got hit when we were parked and someone from another Procar came and helped us out which was very helpful, they took care of the paperwork and spoke to the driver who drove into our car. Quite helpful and nice people. "

They should tell you however that the fuel point at the airport only accepted card payment. Drop off was fine and they allowed me to drop the keys ahead of the que as I was running a little late..I just hope they never found any problems.
