" The discrepancy on the hire document between the hire time and our flight arrival time caused us problems. This needs to be accurate. "

" Where do I start? Overall to call the service subpar would be a compliment! I was unaware I was renting through a 3rd party service and I will not make that same mistake in the future. We paid around £80 extra for some kind of liability cover which wasn't honoured by Goldcar and we had to fork out a further £200+ to insure the vehicle on the spot which for a young couple holidaying on a tight budget was a massive shock. The vehicle was clean when we picked it up as expected but the brake pads are clearly on their way out, I'm no mechanic but my brake pads have never sounded as worn down as the ones in this vehicle. Maderia's roads are precarious enough for a young driver without having a vehicle in which you can't trust the brakes. "

They would not accept the insurance we had bought via auto Europe and demanded we purchase theirs when we declined they refused to accept a debit card for the deposit they wanted to take of 1200€ and would only take it with a credit card. I only had a debit card but they would not accept my partners credit card. They therefore m'aide us purchase the insurance again from them directly or not hire the car to us. It was a terrible experience and ruined the start of our much needed holiday. I do feel that auto Europe should mention that this at purchase. We ended up with two insurances because of this. " I reserved an economy car, Volkswagen Polo or similar, £305 for 2 weeks. Madeira is all mountains with very steep roads. I asked the man about the size of the engine of the car he was going to give me. (I don't remember what type it was.) He said it was 900cc. I asked if was suitable to get up the mountain roads. He said no. I said I would have expected a Volkswagen Polo or similar to to have a bigger engine suitable for Madeira's roads. He said that some Polos are 900cc and the economy category of car was the same as the mini category except with 4 doors instead of 2 doors. He wanted to hire me a diesel car with a big engine for an extra 270 euros. I refused. Then he offered me a 1.3L petrol car, a Citroen Catcus for an extra 170 euros (£150). I reluctantly agreed. I feel that I was badly treated and that I should not have had to pay an extra 50% to get a car suitable for Madeira's roads. "

I was unable to register this with the on-site staff - I was advised to photograph all damage and then discuss on drop off. I spent two weeks worrying during the rental that there might be problems when droping off the car. No such issues at drop off, but the worry could have been avoided if the on site staff were to review the existing damage against documentation during pickup. "

" The staff at Dollar (Badged as Hertz / Thrifty) tricked me into bringing the car back half full saying their rate to refill the car was cheaper than at the garage. When I got back they charged me for a full tank of petrol rather than the half tank I had used €67.55 for 196km driven and no time to go back an fill up. This is a new trick for Car Hire companies who I have learned from bitter experience are basically dishonest. My contract was full to full so I guess I have no argument, paying for the experience (literally). As this is my second bad experience with Hertz / Thrifty they shall no longer get my business and this will now include Dollar "

" We had to wait for the mini bus to go to their off-site collection point and back, as it could only accommodate about 6 at a time (we were 4). Once there, we were given the hard sell, "scare tactics" for their extra €147 weekly insurance, including "if you scratch the car wider than 4cm diameter, that's €200, if your tyre runs flat, that's another €200, plus any damages to the wheel/car (apparently it had just happened to a German guy and his son and "they arrived as friends and left as enemies" according to the agent who served us - that's really professional of him to say that, I'm sure it's not the first time he's said it either!) A couple were checking in at the same time and got embroiled in the conversation with the agent serving us, that I just sat down, waited patiently and let them get on with it for 5 minutes, which again I thought was very unprofessional. They block €1050 off your credit card if you don't accept their extra insurance (as I didn't) and I honestly thought (and was scared) I wouldn't see most or all of that money again, but I returned the car the same as I had accepted it and they didn't charge me. They didn't have any of the Fiat 500 left, so we were given the Punto instead. It was newish and already had damage to the front and back bumpers, which was noted on the paperwork. By the way, they ask you to sign a contract in Portuguese only, which I'm not sure is legal. I was honestly just glad to get the car back and leave. Autoeurope also quoted me "collect and drop off with a full tank of fuel" which wasn't accurate at all and the agent poo-pooed it when I quoted him! The car had 20% fuel, we were charged €13 for that and had to return it with 20%, which we did and the money was refunded, minus credit card fees, as they didn't accept my cash! Although I paid only £49 for a week's car hire in Madeira, I would not recommend using the company, as it was too stressful and unprofessional. In fact, it dawned on me I'd used them 4-5 years ago in Alicante and had exactly the same, unpleasant experience, but unfortunately I'd forgotten about it. Sorry Centauro but I can't see you getting repeat business, if this is how hostile you are to your clients, can you? "

" Our hire with bravacar was effortless throughout. Friendly, helpful staff met us at tge airport to collect us for a <5 minute drive to the office and depot where paperwork was completed promptly. We were in the car and on our way probably within 30 minutes of landing. Vehicle return was just as efficient. The cars offered may not be the newest hire cars available (ours had 44,000km) and bodywork is rather scruffy. However, importantly, the vehicle appeared well maintained and mechanically sound. The slightly older nature of the fleet is also reflected in the hire price and quite frankly it's reassuring and rather refreshing to have a rental car already with a few scrapes and knocks, and to know that unlike the big hire firms they're not going to be precious about the car and impose unreasonably high financial penalties for the slightest scuff or stone chip. Particularly good to know on a small island with some difficult roads. I very much which that this 'lower end' approach to car hire were more widespread, afterall, how many people really care quite how tidy and new their holiday hire is, compared against the better price and more relaxed and therefore enjoyable use of a car which is already worn in. " I was given a hard sell when collecting the car. The representative told me that that the car I had booked would not be able to climb all the hills on the Island. So, why can I rent such a car? I was advised to upgrade to a diesel 1.5ltr car; at a cost of £50. I was going to upgrade until I was told I had to pay by card. Cash was unacceptable, according to the terms and conditions I had entered into. So, I declined the upgrade. I then had to pay an airport tax for collecting the car. I believe this cost should be added at the time of booking; especially when I have already confirmed to you my collection location. I made my frustrations known to the operator, who chose to tell me about the shortfalls of using bigger companies who subcontract... I will recommend to my friend, who has booked a hire car for us to share on 3 Aug 2019 from Basel for a week, to cancel the booking and use a straight forward and honest company, who do not look to exploit people at arrival. " See my comments below. When I went to pick up the vehicle I was advised the vehicle I had booked wasn't very appropriate for use in Madeira which made me wonder why it was even available. The upgrade vehicle proved appropriate however. Also some rather confusing advice was given regarding fuel prices on the island which factored in my vehicle upgrade choice which I consider after the event to be misleading, if not wrong re the fuel pricing. I'm not usually minded to complain but consider that better information re vehicles should be provided at the time of booking if certain vehicles are inappropriate. Also there was a large cost for airport tax that should be better disclosed rather than modestly touched on in the fine print. "

Did not want to pay for an upgrade and was then offered a Fiat Panda as best alternative. However after using the car for a few days, it proved unsuitable as its gear lever was in a raised position which played havoc with my arthritic shoulder. Went to a local depot and car was changed for an Opal Corsa (Renault Clio not available) which proved to be excellent. "

" Wouldn't recommend or use again - booked a car with Interrent for a week for my holiday and was unable to collect my car on booked date due to my flight being diverted to another island as it was unsafe to land due to heavy winds. When I finally reached my holiday destination 2 days later (bearing in mind I've booked the car for a full week) I was then denied a car and was told the car was no longer available and repeatedly told I should've called to inform them what was happening (the car rental is based at the airport) you would've thought they would've noticed planes weren't landing! Despite explaining I had other things to sort such as accommodation and to arrange transport back, not once did I receive an apology or even some sort of solution just rudeness and attitude - for example, I explained it wasn't my fault and the response I got back 'it's not mine either' definitely no customer service skills to even give a customer such response! I ended up with no car and no refund. STAY WELL AWAY!! "

" I was persuaded to upgrade to a more powerful car due to the number of mountains on the island, and as it happened this was a reasonable thing to do. I was told the cost would be Euro 30 i.e. Euro 10 per day. It would have been cheaper to book the upgraded car originally but that was my decision. When I came to pay at the end I was told the bill was Euro 40.57. This was 30 + credit card handling fee 3.25 + tax at 22%.. No one mentioned the latter 2 items when I booked. The amount involved is not large in real terms but to have to pay 35% more than was agreed is a con, and I will not be using Hertz again in a hurry. "
