" I booked a Ford Mondeo or similar. When I arrived with my family and all my luggage I was offered a Mercedes A class having been advised they were in the same class. When I argued that I booked a Mondeo because of the size they told me they had a VW Passat in-stock but I would have to pay the difference because it was 2 classes above. This is scandalous service as I was up against the wall and was forced to pay extra for what is exactly the made size vehicle that I booked and was pushed towards what is a much much smaller vehicle "

" It was confusing that I booked through Auto Europe and was dealt with by Avis staff where a small Payless sign was displayed. By the time the extra was added to cover the insurance excess it was hard to imagine that anyone would be paying more for a week's car hire. It really makes me wonder how much genuine competition is operating or whether it is a cosy cartel. "
" I was surprised to find that the car had done 67,000km and was a dated model. Of most concern to me was that one of the hub caps dropped off while I was driving around. I followed the rules about only driving on metalled roads and had no bumps or scrapes. I can only assume that the hub cap had not been securely fastened. The Avis counter staff insisted that I should pay the 37 euro administration charge, which of course is levied on top of the large cost of insuring against the excess charge. I was met with polite intransigence and of course I had a plane to catch. "
