I had to travel to rural Portugal and was not comfortable or confident to drive an automatic having tried once before and it being a disaster. Luckily the fabulous staff at Porto found me a 3 seater van, which saved the day as we were only 3 passengers. This caused me unnecessary stress. " I wanted to hire a small car to travel around in. Rentastar only hire out Mercedes cars and there was no hint of this during the booking process through Auto Europe. They don't hire out small cars so I received an A class Mercedes and I wasn't after a high performance, prestige car. The whole booking process was very misleading. "

" Rentastar is only located about 2 mins further away from OPO than the 'on airport' rentals. Their cars and collection bus are top class - all fairly new Mercedes. Gripes? We had to phone from the terminal to get them to collect us, even though they knew which flight we were on, and they charge a Euro 10 car cleaning fee (which in fairness you can avoid if you give the car back in the same condition as when collected, but probably worthwhile. Really nice staff too. "

" The cars that this company rent are all Mercedes. They are good vehicles, not the newest but perfectly servicable. All the items you might need are extra cost over & above the rental. It was irritating that some of the included tech had been decommisioned in order for them to sell you inferior extras. They also tried to charge me additional costs(insurance) that we had already paid for with my contract with Auto Europe. But I understand that this is common practice in the car rental industry. "
" The vehicle had been modified so would not accept apple carplay or android, so could not play our music or use google maps. The SD card that they sold us for sat Nav was useless and a waste of money. The car war 3 years old and had lots of scratches & stonechips on every panel. On return they said they found a new stone chip on the bumper and charged me an extra 100 euros for the alleged extra damage. I cannot say for sure if it was there before or not but when you have a plane to catch it is difficult to argue the toss especially when the have already frozen £2000.00 on your credit card and just deduct the payment. The guy who returned his car at the same time as me was charged 260euros for a scratch on the boot panel where he had loaded & unloaded his luggage. I think there has to be a reasonable amount of wear & tear expected on a holiday hire car and they were particularly pernicity. This rather leaves a bad taste on the car hire contract. "

" The price is rather fair but the vehicle has to be returned spotlessly clean. If it is not returned as clean as when you picked it up, you'll have to pay a 25 euro fee. Alternatively you can pay 10 euros on pick up to cover those same expenses. There seemed to be zero flexibility on the vehicle returning time. Also, since I had a 3rd party insurance, my deposit was close to 2000 euros. Other than that, the staff was very nice and the car was in perfect condition. "

" Firstly I was not met at the airport.(10,30pm) My phone did not work so I had to ask someone else to phone after walking all over the airport trying to find Rentastar. Took a long time and then collected. (11.30pm) I paid for the GPS (extra) and was advise I have to bring the car back clean or pay 10 euros for them to wash it. After paying this the GPS did not work and they could not get it to work. I ordered a car with GPS. Very poor light so very difficult in the dark at 1 am in the morning for scratches and dents and given a car that was not full there fore difficult to measure when returning it. Hence they got a car with a full tank and I didn't. Eventually I followed the driver who collected me from the airport to the Holiday Inn Express near the airport. 2 am without a GPS. When returning the car there was a long wait as 3 new rentals were being attended to and whilst waiting three drop offs occurred. The car was fine. I am now expecting a refund of the GPS and the car wash in lieu of the extra petrol I put in. The staff did their best they could at the time but do not feel My experience was a great one. "

" I have been a customer for almost 10 years and this is the second time I have an issue with a car company. My 1st problem experience Autoeurope haven't dealt wit the complaint appropriately and let me down. However I continued a valued customer and againI have another issue. I truly would like to see a different position from Autoeurope at this time. "
" I'm would like to raise this as a complaint as the company tried to sell the toll device alleging I could only pay for toll charge if using this device. They have wrongly hold the deposit onto my DEBIT CARD (as I gave it to pay for the toll device) and did not take the deposit on my CREDIT CARD which triggered interests pay on my bank account. This company have also charge me €15 euros for car washing! An absurd fee that does not state anywhere on the agreement with Autoeurope or Rentastar. The car was clean and only got rain marks externally. Really absurd having to pay for car cleaning! "

" Renting with this company for about 3 years. Service is mixed, sometimes quick and efficient, other times less so. Waiting time to be picked up at the Airport is still too long - having to wait for more than 45 minutes one time - and occasionally have had to get a cab to the agency. This inconvenience is unacceptable, since the rental agreement includes pick/drop off and the office is a 3mnt drive. The staff's attitude to this shortfall seem to be reliant on the fact that their cars are exclusive and massively discounted, in comparison with other providers, which I agree, however, it does not justify the service. The last time time I rented was great, massive improvement on the service and I would love for it to keep on. "

After a phone call a van was sent but it had no company name on it and didn't stop so we had to phone again. " Rentastar do not make it specifically CLEAR at time of booking that customers need €1200 available on their credit card. Only in the small print is this stated but no attempt to make the customer fully aware at time of submitting payment. I paid £83 which was easy to do online only to be told at the destination that we couldn't have the car because the credit card didnt have enough on it. Had I been made aware of this clearly I wouldn't have booked it. We were told we wouldn't get a refund as its "in the small print " and were left with no car at midnight. Never have I come across a car hire company who demands such an amount to block on your card "

The office staff arrived at 07:00 but advised me that I could only return the car after 8 or would have to pay an additional €45. I was asked to go and park somewhere until that time. Given the location of their office there was no parking available in the vicinity and fearing that when I returned at 08:00 there would be others in front of me I decided to pay the €45 to avoid delays. Had their office opened at 08:00 as advised I would have been first in line and hence avoided any potential delay in getting to the airport "

" Auto Europe did not give us written details about the meeting point at the airport where we were due to meet the Rentastar representative (saying meet at arrivals) although when I rang they then told us those details. Also the phone number given to contact the rental company is not a number that is answered (and on surfing the internet it has become clear that this is a continual problem) I do not know why Auto Europe has dealings with this company who we now realise have a notorious reputation. I therefore no longer trust Auto Europe to recommend trustworthy customers. In nearly 40 years of hiring cars abroad, Rentastar is by far the worst company we have ever dealt with. "

It took an hour from original time to be collected to get car. 2) Staff were rude and surly and did not speak English 3) Took further 1.5 hours to get car. We kept being told it would only be a further 5 minutes each time we asked how long it would be until we got the car. 4) We only drove the car 70 kms and only used it for 2 journeys. When we returned it the following happened: a) The rental company tried to tell us the car was dirty and that we would have to pay Euros 15 for it to be washed. b) We made a fuss and then they found a supposed mark on the front spoiler that they said we caused - which was basically impossible based on the driving we had undertaken, but we were unable to disprove. They then charged us the extortionate amount of Euro 492 for the damage. We complained profusely, but the manager supposedly did not speak English and just ignored us. c) They refused to unblock our credit card until we paid for the damage (basically making us pay under duress) d) One of their employees then out of earshot of his boss, told us that this company continually used sharp practices to extort money from its customers, and that the previous day a young girl had been charged Euros 1000 for a tiny scratch. e) We have now surfed the internet and found that there are numerous reviews with very similar experiences. THE MOST APPALLING EXPERIENCE THAT I HAVE HAD IN FORTY YEARS OF HIRING CARS ABROAD. "

" Auto Europe was OK apart from the phone number they put on the car rental voucher, which was not right. The number was the privated phone number of the lady who USED TO OWN the business but she now has sold it. So she answered my call after I called 4-5 times to explain the situation to me.. "
" This is the WORST car rental I have ever experienced in terms of customer service, and I have rented a lot of cars across Europe! I would seriously recommend that you stop doing business with them. My car rental was requested to start at 17.30 and after I called Auto Europe and Rentastar in total about 10 times all together I was able to receive confirmation from Autoeurope that someone was coming to the airport to meet me. I was met by a non-smiley lady who did not bother to explain why so late or apologise in earnest, and ended up in a shuttle bus at almost 19.00 which drove me and another customer for 15-20mins around to get to Rentastar where the service was super slow and above all rude. The staff was not welcoming, friendly or polite, they were acting in a cynical way that gave you a sense that they knew they were providing a poor service to the customer but also knew that the customer would not just leave as money had been already paid to make the car booking. The contract took very long to draw up as the lady at the desk was not efficient plus there was a power shutdown before she concluded the process online so we had to do it all over again. After very detailed car inspection and them taking photos of the car, I ended up picking up the car at around 20.00 instead of 17.30-18.00 that evening so had to cancel on some plans with local friends who were waiting for me. At least the car was as requested and in perfect condition, so I enjoyed that. When returning the car though, in the condition I got it in and with full tank, I had to spend about 30 mins waiting for the staff to decide whether to charge me or not for a very small thumbnail size superficial cut on the side of the front left tyre of the car that we did not notice or mark upon car pickup and that the photos could not possible show as too black/small. While this is normally acceptable wear and tear in all other car rentals I have used they insisted that this is damage that I should be charged for but given the photo could not prove the state of tyre before my rental they reluctantly accepted to write "All OK" in the Vehicle Condition sheet, in Portuguese. I asked to get refunded my EUR 1,950 so I can depart to the airport to catch my return flight and they said that their bank machine was not working. I then asked them to give me a signed paper that makes them commit that they will refund/unblock my deposit in 24 Hours. They did that and I left stressed and worried that they will somehow turn around and tell me that actually they found a scratch somewhere so they will charge me. After 24hrs the amount was still blocked on my account. After 48hrs it was finally unblocked. This was a very annoying and stressful experience for a simple 48hr car rental. Never again with rentastar, NEVER, as they are not good people! "

" When we arrived in the airport there was nobody waiting. We did not know what to do. Luckily, other rental agents advised us to call Rentastar, we searched for the number online and called them - relieved that our phones actually worked, we were not aware that this would happen and were very worried that our phones would not work and nobody would come. Finally someone arrived and brought us to the rental shop, a member of staff put a cold on my credit card of 1300euro, however they had problems with their card machine and nothing printed, this staff member told me my card was not working, there was no money. I got a shock. Luckily, I checked my online banking and saw that the hold was placed at that time with the name of the rental agency. I showed this to the staff. I stood at the desk for a long time. 2 hours at least, waiting, late for a wedding. Nobody told me what was happening, at the end of the long wait I was asked to call my bank. I called my bank in Thailand (expensive) and they confirmed the amount was on hold and shared the transaction code. After all of this I was told that the best thing they could do is get me to pay 75euro on full insurance and another deposit of 250euro. I was desperate so I agreed, and put them on another card where the paper printed out . When we returned the car we gave in the second card with the 250e hold and they could not refund it. They said they would contact their holding agent and email. They never emailed but the money was returned to the second card. I am still waiting for the hold of 1300euro to be lifted from the initial card. All in all a really bad experience, that ended up costing me so much extra time, money and stress and all through no fault of my own and I was made to feel like I had a problem with my card, that I had money, that I was lying, when in fact it was not my problem at all. "
