" Worst car hire experience of my life. 40 minute queue at the Target desk on arrival despite only being 5 people ahead of me, all of whom seemed to get quite animated with the counter staff prior to their departure.... the reason became apparent when it was my turn. After being presented with paperwork for a Fiat 500 and explaining I had booked a Golf, we debated how unsimilar they were for a very brief moment. Not so much a debate as a shrug from the staff member. We then got to the only reason for the delay, insurance hard sell. Explaining I had already bought separate insurance from AutoEurope when I booked my car and showing them the paperwork, meant nothing. I was told I was not the professional, they were, and I should listen to them not some broker. I was threatened with exponential costs for damage including a daily charge for the vehicle being off the road if I damage it. Even turning over my contract and writing lists of sums that appeared more like telephone numbers, I assume to frighten me into submission. After clarifying that the insurance was optional and declining the kind offer of an extra £50 per day, I was forced to sign a form confirming the condition of a car I had yet to see and waived off toward the car park. I asked where exactly to go, the response was "you didn't want to listen to my advice so you can find it yourself". What a welcome to Sardinia! It's not over, I located the key collection desk outside after a brief search, on my own. When I entered the lady was on the phone and I heard her repeating my name. She finished her call and smiled to me, I introduced myself, no idea why my name had come up in her phone conversation because she still had to look my details up only to discover that due to an unexpected delay, my car wasn't ready and I would have to wait 30 minutes, perhaps I should have taken the insurance! She promised she would phone me when it was ready. To be fair she did, exactly 30 minutes later. The car was covered in scratches. Literally not a panel untouched. I was told to take pictures of them all for my records. I did, however clearly not thoroughly enough. Fast forward a week to drop off... We arrived at 7:55am. The lady that was there told me they didn't open until 8am and proceeded to ignore us until 8:05am. When she did speak to us, she told me off for being 30 minutes early. (A month before when making the booking I had allowed for traffic etc on the return and given myself half an hour leeway. I thought being early would be preferable to being late. She disagreed!) I apologised and explained I had misjudged the traffic, choosing not to mention the fact they had delayed me far longer without apology on my arrival a week prior. She checked the car. Immediately and suspiciously finding and photographing the one scratch (not really a scratch, it looked like a door had be opened into my car) that I didn't have a picture of from the week before, funnily enough the same colour as the car her colleague had just parked next to mine, and was still polishing. Then she located several more "fresh" scratches that I fortunately did have photo evidence that they preexisted, and which she then forgave me for. I'm yet to receive the bill for my scratch. I expect it will be more than the insurance would have been, and then I will have to claim on the "Full cover" insurance you sold me prior to arrival so will reserve judgment on that. And there ends my experience. I hope you agree that this warrants the score I've given and am happy to discus it further if you wish to contact me. "

Georgia - behind the counter was polite and efficient, but felt ripped off with additional charges €242 for accident cover on top of our payment. The car, Renault Megane estate was big, comfortable and quiet but had a massive scratch / dent / scrape down the whole of the drivers door and rear door. No one cared about it. The advert said Verona Airport, but it wasn't. It was a shuttle drive away - so felt like false advertising. We wouldn't book again "

" I was disappointed that I had ordered and paid for 'full to full' fuel, the car was running on fumes when picked up. Far from ideal. There was also an issue with tyre pressure on both rear tyres. The TPS recorded over inflated for both, this caused a continual warning on the dash, resulting in me being nervous and limiting usage for the hire period. "

" Auto Europe failed to give correct and meaningful information of where and how to collect this rental on arrival at Pisa Airport. Auto Europe failed to give correct information of the local operating name of the eventual rental Company. After a frustrating aircraft delay, over an hour was further wasted trying to establish where the collection point was. The telephone number printed on Voucher did not pick-up. Once contact was made through Auto Europe Office, the Italian desk operator promised to WhatsApp location details to me - This never transpired as they did not have my mobile Number. Location details were only finally established after a second pass through to MultiRent from AutoEurope and verbal directions received. Auto Europe you need to review the actual local operating name of the rental companies you Agent for. You need to establish and pre-publish pick-up locations of the rental companies offices you work with. A very frustrating event which does not endear me to use Auto Europe again ! "

" This was starting to cause some stress and anxiety within our family but we made it back to Bergamo Airport and when we arrived to the Italy Car Rental kiosk, the lady said they did not have the Intermediate Car which Matt booked us - see Voucher attached UK5480866-1. In fact she advised the only car she had available was a Fiat Panda which was unacceptable to carry 2 adults (myself who is 6ft 4") my wife and two grown up teenage children along with luggage. My wife then made a second telephone call (33 minutes) to Matt to advise him that the car was no longer available with Italy Car Rent and in fact there were no other intermediate size cars available at all. Whilst on the phone, Matt had suggested to go round all the other Car hire companies in the Airport to see if we could hire another car from a different company. Matt stayed on the phone for the duration of the call as my wife walked around all the other Car rental companies in the airport. After my wife exhausted all options and to no avail of any cars being available at the other Rental companies. Matt apologised and said there was nothing else he could do but to contact Auto Europe when we would come back from our trip to raise a claim for compensation but he ensured us that the Refund would be issued for the original booking at a cost of £321.55. Unfortunately, we had no other choice but to take the Fiat Panda from Italy Car Rent which was actually a HORRENDOUS experience for us. We got the shuttle bus to the Italy car rental car park to pick up the car. We could not fit all luggage into the boot space so our children had to nurse the bags. I could not even get my seat back enough to drive in a comfortable safe position. We had a 3 hour trip to get to our hotel in Riva del Garda. We had been very much looking forward to exploring the lake in the car which we first had booked over our week's holiday but unfortunately, we were not able to do this. We could not make full use of the car at all in our week and returned the car on our departure day (29 July 2023) back at the Airport. In light of the above distressing experience and much stress and anxiety caused and also not receiving our refund, I am seeking compensation. I believe Auto Europe is at fault for not updating their Terms and Conditions with Target Rent on the Voucher for the Credit Block Charge, no fault of our own on the original booking. Unfortunately, this was not an enjoyable experience for our first family holiday to Italy. We have allowed over 21 days for you to issue the refund as promised in the telephone call by Matt on 22 July but as yet this has not been refunded. I look forward to your reply. I do hope you can solve the matter as soon as possible. "
" It is with deep regret that I write this email. We as a family are very disappointed with our Auto Europe Car Hire experience. As a family of 4; 2 adults and 2 teenage children, we were very much looking forward to our first ever family holiday to Italy. I booked our Car hire on 1 June 2023 by Credit Card at a cost of £321.55 - see Voucher attached UK5451234-1 On arrival to Bergamo Airport on 22 July 2023, we got a Shuttle bus to the Target Rent depot. We produced all the necessary documentation, the lady at the kiosk advised us that she could not give us the car that we had booked as the Credit card block had to be a limit of EUR 1500. My credit card had a limit of £1000 which we had ensured covered the EUR 950. When we booked, we reviewed the Terms and Conditions and it clearly stated on our voucher that a Credit Card Block of EUR 950 would be blocked on my credit card at time of pick up, see highlighted in yellow on Voucher. My wife made a call to Matt (22 minutes) back to the Auto Europe UK office on 22 July to advise of the issue, he apologised and said that it was a mistake on the paperwork and it was never updated to read the higher credit card block charge. Matt spoke to his supervisor and he advised that they would offer us a Refund of £321.55 within 7 - 10 days. As yet we have still not received this Refund, over 21 days later. Matt then advised that he would book us another Intermediate size vehicle with Italy Car Rent with a Credit Card Block of EUR 900, see highlighted in yellow on Voucher and that if we could make our way back to the Airport, we would be able to pick this vehicle up with Italy Car Rent at a cost of £209.73 which I paid with my Debit card. "

" Having waited 45 minutes for a shuttle to not arrive for our "on-airport" car hire, we called auto-europe. Most of this call was spent trying to explain we were not in fact an hour early for our arrival, but Italy is actually an hour ahead of UK time. I can get this being queried once because of initial confusion, but when speaking to a company named "auto EUROPE", you'd hope they'd grasp this time difference quite quickly from then. When we stated that we'd been waiting 45 minutes and had called 7 times, we were told to phone the rental company again. We tried to explain that we had done so multiple times and weren't achieving anything, asking that Auto Europe make contact given that our booking was with them. Auto Europe were obtuse and unhelpful, offering no assistance or solution. We waited over an hour for a shuttle bus which is completely unacceptable, especially given we booked through Auto Europe on the basis of an on-airport rental. "
" When booking, we chose the rental based on being listed as on-airport. Over 10 minutes in a shuttle isn't on airport. Phoning and being told shuttle is 5 minutes away 13 times and waiting an hour for a shuttle also isn't what you'd expect when picking on-airport rental. "

" The car had a lot of minor damage and major damage under the right side door sill. I spotted all of this and made sure it was recorded although the staff did not advise me of the damage under the sill which I thought devious - it was parked very close on this side and not visible until the car was pulled out. I feared that if I had not spotted it I may have been held liable. "
