We were charged an extra day then and I had to justify my timings as opposed to the garage personnel - thankfully I had evidence of refueling, and pics taken at the return. Had I not, I'd have been charged an extra day for nothing! "

" I am unable to say what my experience with Thrifty was becasue, at the Munich Airport, I was finally served by Hertz, not ny Thrifty. I was not prepared for such a change and it cost me extra £316,- (more than the original rate, which was £285). Being unprepared for this, I made a number of mistakes buing additional insurance and service. Hertz offered me additional services and insurance which were written in German and in small print using symbols and codes, which did not know before. It is really sad that respected car rental company uses such tricks. I also got an automatic car, though I requested a manual one. "

We eventually had to to abandon the vehicle (with Hertz's knowledge) and take public transport which for a party with 2 children and 1 baby was incredibly stressful. The experience with this vehicle (which Hertz had several chances to resolve) proved a nightmare for our family which very nearly ruined 6 months of training for an Ironman race and thousands of pounds spent on the trip. " When I made a booking it was not clear that I would have to pay a cross border fee which was 1/3 of rental price. It was not the case in previous years. The crossborder fee only appear on a voucher! I checked rental voucher 1 week before travel. That was too late to cancel the booking and check another rental companies. That looks like a cheat. " I have used Auto Europe for many years and always fared well. When I had to extend my rental, because of my mother's condition they were very helpful as I could keep the car and only had to drive to Munich station (where I originally had planned to drop it off) to sign a new contract and it was no problem to drop the car off at Munich airport due to my changed travel plans. In Munich main station office it was again only Hertz with the longest queue, but 45 minutes were bearable and the staff was very nice and helpful. If it would have not been about the very long wait, I would recommend Thrifty, but I cannot face the prospect of another long wait next time and booked with Alamo for October "

No explanation was given until almost the end of my wait (no cars available) and it only filtered through talking to other people waiting (there were about 50, some with young children) As I was on my own I could not get myself a drink etc. I had flown to Munich to collect my 92 year old mother from hospital after a stroke on this day and had to make frantic phone calls to make other arrangements. While the staff, when I finally got my car, was very courteous, it was also the lack of information, that was really annoying. I have rented cars in Munich (and other countries) many times over the last 30 years, I have never ever had to wait this long. However the car was exactly what I requested and the counter staff was very polite and helpful, but I think the management should have given people an explanation and I really cannot understand why there were not enough cars, when everyone seemed to have booked in advance "

When we got there, we were told we could only have an Opel Vivaro 9 seater van (too big!) or a VW Polo (too small!). I had to argue with the guy a bit, who didn't seem to care that I'd not be confident driving such a large thing as a left hand drive Vivaro into Poland where we were ultimately heading. In the end, I pointed out that I'd seen a perfectly good Astra Estate in his car park which he reluctantly let me take. The Astra itself was actually excellent (Xenons, 7" sat nav, heated seats etc)... just a shame the guy lied & tried to fob me off with a van. "
