" Upon collecting the rental vehicle from the airport, I was disappointed by the conduct of the staff member assisting us. He was notably rude and dismissive, particularly when we informed him that we had our own insurance coverage. His response was that he "did not care," and he proceeded to list various charges we would incur in the event of a breakdown. What was most surprising was the revelation that we would be responsible for costs associated with roadside assistance and even a punctured tyre--terms I have not encountered in previous car hire experiences. The staff member's attitude was unfriendly and unhelpful, and it appeared that even basic customer service was a burden to him. Upon inspecting the vehicle, I noticed visible scratches and a dent. These damages were not initially recorded, and only after I returned to the office where they acknowledged and marked on the inspection sheet. I am concerned about what might have happened had I not taken the initiative to inspect the car beforehand. Overall, this was a poor experience, and I do not intend to use this company again. "

" am writing to formally dispute a charge of €340 applied during my recent Thrifty rental at Murcia Airport. Upon collection, the agent, who spoke limited English, insisted that this amount was a deposit, despite my clear explanation that I already held valid third-party insurance for driving in Spain. I paid the amount in good faith, expecting it to be refunded upon return of the vehicle. However, I have since discovered that this was not a deposit but an insurance premium, which I did not authorise or require. The vehicle rental fee of £172.18 had already been paid separately prior to collection. I am attaching evidence of my existing insurance policy, which clearly covered the rental period. I respectfully request: A full refund of the €340 insurance charge. A review of communication practices at Murcia Airport to ensure agents clearly distinguish between mandatory deposits and optional insurance products. "

" On arrival they tried to persuade us to take out extra insurance which we had already taken out with auto europe. We declined but we were concerned whether we would get our deposit back. They marked 3 scratches on the paperwork but when we checked the car over there were a lot more. We took photographs. We booked an SUV but they gave us a citreon cx4 which is not a hatch back and not what I was expecting but it did the job and was good on fuel. "

" Booking through Auto Europe was easy, prices seemed a little higher than I found elsewhere, but it was offset by a good Topcashback rate "
" Quite a hard sell on upgrades and insurance at pick up. The return was not good. We arrived and joined a long line (6 people in front of us) for the Returns desk. There was only one member of staff on and she was taking forever with summertime picking up a car. The Thrifty office at Málaga airport is inside a multi storey car park, which was very hot, and there are two doors (one marked "PICK UP" the the other marked "RETURNS". Everyone waiting was in the RETURNS line. When the one member is staff eventually finished with her customer, she shouted at everyone in the line "PUT YOUR KEYS IN THE BOX, I DON'T SERVE YOU". No idea why she couldn't said this at any point while she was already serving, as she looked up several times and knew EVERYONE was waiting to return their vehicles. "

The vehicle I was issued with was a perfectly good car however not the category of car I had booked. "
" I had booked Peugeot 2008 or similar sUV vehicle class however on arrival I was given a Dacia Sonderro the car itself being well appointed with no issues. I was then offered an upgrade to a Renault Captur for an extra 3 euros per day. I did not take the option of the upgrade as the Renault Captur was within the class of car I had initially booked. "

" We arrived late on At night, close to 11pm. It is not easy to find the Thrifty desk which is in the parking garage. The queues were very long and slow and not enough staff were on to deal with the amount of cars being picked up. Despite buying extra insurance through autoeurope, they really do give you a hard sell on needing more insurance and making you feel uneasy about how many thousands of pounds they will charge you if the car is damaged. "

" Staff very rude and continually threatening to charge extra costs. On arrival I extra costs entered onto bill without telling me which I challenged and the staff member then was very unpleasant. On return they said I was responsible for a small scratch on the rear bumper which I had not caused. The car had done £26k km. They then gave me a long lecture because the un-manned petrol station I used to fill up did not issue me a receipt. All in all very nasty experience even though I took the car back in perfect condition. "

" I have rented x3 times this year. First two occasions were fine. No problems on return with prompt refund of deposit. No hard sale at desk. On the third occasion the process was pmuch the same experience, except after return to the UK i noticed a few days later that my Credit Card had been debited to the amount of 64 euros, no explanation provided by any means of communication. This has obviously left a bitter taste in the mouth, with me now having chase up this "Extra Charge". As a footnote the paperwork/ returns form was all cleared as " No extra charges " anywhere. "

" First car picked up had service light on. I rejected this car and they gave me a second one but they forgot to authorise my exit out of the car park so I had to go back to remind them. This resulted in over an hour delay from pickup to finally leaving around 1am with a sick wife and a 6 month old baby. Several days later, the second car also displayed an engine light and the engine started to make a whining/grinding noise under load. I looked up the closest Thrifty depot from my accommodation which was central Valencia according to google. When I arrived there, the attendant said this was Hertz and I had to go to the airport, despite my explaining about the car's mechanical condition. She was dismissive and rude. I drove to the València airport and a thrifty employee called Alberto provided me a replacement car. Although the car was dirty, I was assured it was mechanically sound. Whilst driving home on the motorway, the car's handling felt strange so I stopped to check the tyre pressures. The front tyres were overinflated at 46psi and the rear tyres were dangerously under inflated at 19 and 21 psi. This is an appallingly negligent safety issue. "

When returning there was some discussion about a tiny scratch that was hardly visible and Thrifty wanted to make a charge for this, the scratch was rubbed off with saliva and a small cloth and no charge was ultimately made, but it made for a bad experience on this occasion!! "

I spoke to the Auto Europe team on two occasions prior to travelling to Alicante on 29 April and I was advised that I would need to present an International Driving Permit at the desk to collect the vehicle in Alicante. This information is also included in the car rental voucher issued by Auto Europe. However, the International Diving Permit was not required by the car rental company. Hence, it appears that I was missinformed by Auto Europe and this is not really acceptable. I had to go through the inconvenience and expense to obtain an International Diving Permit in the UK prior to travelling and this was not necessary. I would ask that this matter is reviewed and rectified as soon as possible so the information on future vouchers reflects the requirements correctly and accurately. I would also like to be reimbursed for the cost of the International Driving Permit and compensated for the inconvenience caused. "

" I have rented twice with Thrifty within the last 6 months. First time round the vehicle was virtually new (104 KM) with no damage reported on vehicle check sheet. Second time round vehicle surprised me as 57000 KM and what vehicle check sheet reported as having 17 notable marks. I spent 30 mins documenting on my phone by way of dated photos what i could see as new unrecorded damage. In particular a large scrape of paintwork on the underside of the bumper which apparently was untouched according to the vehicle check report. I was only able to share these images on return. In fairness to Thrifty and the returns staff who checked the vehicle back in, they agreed with my findings stating " no new damage" commenting that the vehicle had a long mileage history and would not normally be still within the fleet of vehicles for hire. "

" I paid a substantial amount to Auto Europe get what I perceived to be 'full insurance' cover but when I spoke with Thrifty, they told me that I was still liable for the 'excess' and they would need to take a 1000euro deposit. In order to cover this I had to pay an additional several hundred euros. In fact with my age penalty I paid an 'additional' sum of 480.12 euros. So, in all, I paid £320.71 to Auto Europe on 4th Feb'25 and £413.86 to Hertz via Thrifty on 18th April, making a grand total of £744.57 for a three-week car hire; this is extortionate. I visit Spain frequently and have rented cars on numerous occasions but never experienced this 'insurance dodge' before. Consequently, I am very disappointed with Auto Europe and will never use them again. "

" Using Auto Europe for finding a rental car for our three weeks stay at our holiday home near Malaga was very straight forward. They came up with a fairly good deal and there appeared to be no hidden extras that we were not aware of. Unfortunately, the deal we chose was with Thrifty, and our dealings with their staff at Malaga airport left a lot to be desired. We were however very happy with the Citroen C3 that proved a nippy and very easy car to drive. "
" I rented a Citroen C3 for three weeks in March from Malaga airport. I cannot really fault Thrifty's efficiency in dealing with my rental, however, the lady who served me was quite unpleasant when I said I already had Excess insurance cover. I was also under the impression that Thrifty's desk was in the arrivals hall, when in fact it was at the far end, downstairs in the depth of the car park. There was no seating available, which was a problem for my husband who is 87 years old and unable to stand for any length of time. She also had a very aggressive manner when I returned the vehicle, pointing out that there was a scratch above one of the windows that was not on the paperwork. It left me feeling quite upset, since we had taken great care of the car, which had been left on our private drive most of the time. Quite apart from anything else, I was unable to see any evidence of a scratch when I examined the car. As a result, I was anxiously searching my credit card statement when I returned home, but found to my relief that I was "only"charged 110.65 Euros extra, some of which was the maximum fee of 95.40 Euros for being over 70 years old (which I knew I would be charged for) I have no idea what the rest was for, an emailed invoice would have been nice. I do not think I will hire a car from Thrifty again, and should have read their reviews before going ahead with the rental! "

" Auto Europe are a good company, but in booking me with Firefly last year and Thrifty this year, I have been ripped off for over £300 and bullied and pressured by their staff. I will never use the Hertz group again! "
" Thrifty in Spain is now Firefly. This could not be worse because Firefly are the lowest rated car hire company in Europe. They are also NOT in the airport terminal even though there is a sign in the baggage area clearly stating that they do have a counter there. No-one in the terminal was able/willing to help us find their counter. It took us 45 minutes and was incredibly stressful. The Firfly/Thrifty staff are trained to push over-priced insurance and roadside recovery scams to ever customer. Even if they provide evidence of fully comprehensive insurance etc. they bullied me for 20 minutes and would not let me leave without buying cover or signing around 10 waiver documents to say that I was 'uncovered'! Do not book with either company!!! "

" Overall a very good experience was had with Thrifty. The car was a medium size and was virtually new. The staff member who dealt with me was efficient whilst not being too pushy about any extra insurances for which i had cover personally, so declined all. On a local level at Alicante Airport signposting to Thrifty was dreadful, with seemingly no one having ever heard of this company ! Even when in the car park where vehicles are accessed they appear to have a small temporary office whilst preparing for a move into larger premises which will still be within the car park levels. Lift levels of airport and car park do not correlate. Nothing new here. One quirk is that they dispatch you to your vehicle with paperwork and key and ask that any damages longer than the pen mark they mark on the paperwork you capture (dated) on your phone BEFORE you leave the car park. This is done by yourself, without the presence of a staff member. So be thorough. Inside and out. Obviously a staff member is in attendance on return of vehicle. Full Full fuel policy, with fuel RECEIPT needed on return. "

" We struggled to locate the car in the car park - we were directed to an outside area that we had not been to before. It was not very clearly marked and there were lots of different rental bays to search through. There was nobody around to ask for help either. At the drop off the underground car park was total chaos, and staff were expecting cars to be parked in the tightest of spots, which actually made me feel very stressed/uncomfortable. If it wasn't for this I would have rated the overall experience a 10! "

" All good and would definitely use you again. Just make sure the booking paperwork matches what happens at the airport. I was expecting to have a €955 card block but when there they were talking about me paying €140 or €1005 but I find t know why. After paying the additional €140 they still blocked €200 on my card. It didn't feel dishonest we were hustling throughly confused. That's just for your feedback. A first time car renter may have felt very unsure about it. "

" At Seville Airport the Thrifty counter was impossible to find. It turns out that it is now called Firefly. There was no signage in the main arrivals hall and even staff at the Hertz counter could not give us directions. It is located in a small kiosk at the back of the car park and took us almost 30 minutes to find. A location map together with the correct name of the company would have helped enormously. "

" I use auto Europe for all of my foreign car hire trips. Sometimes up to 6 or 8 times a year. It's a shame your contractors in Tenerife have let you down on this occasion. "
" On arrival at Tenerife south Airport the counter staff where more interested in there coffee. After finally getting our contract it took 20 mins to find the car hire pick up point. Staff there were useless. Took 30 mins to locate our car as it was off airport! On drop off only one member of staff was checking in cars. Tookt 25 mins to be seen. Not good service. "

" I found renting a car in Spain more stressful than in other countries. There seems to be confusion about whether an International Driving Permit is required for UK drivers in Spain. AutoEurope warned that one maybe needed and when I tried to clarify the situation the Thrifty hire desk said yes, but you can't actually get an IDP for Spain in the UK because it is not on the list of countries needing one. When I got to pick up the car they never asked for an IDP a UK driving licence was all that they wanted, but worrying about if one would be required made the process unnecessarily stressful. The hire desk at Thrifty were very forceful in trying to sell their all inclusive insurance even though I said that I had a policy to cover excesses. They then pointed out that if the car broke down then it would cost be 450 Euros to call roadside assistance, it was though they were trying to frighten me into paying 80 Euros for additional cover which was more than the cost of the hire in the first place! "

" Dreadfully ripped off by Hertz. I had a puncture, no spare wheel, no repair kit, vehicle had to be recovered. Truck Driver damaged the front of the vehicle when loading onto truck which I was then charged for despite arguing with the supplier. I was also charged for new tyre and cost of fuel as it wasn't returned in the same Full-Full. (Impossible as it was on the back of a truck!!!) They did waive the cost of recovery truck. "

" On positive notes when asking counter staff allowed for vehicle to be picked up slightly earlier than agreed. Vehicle parked by terminal as advertised. Voucher accepted immediately with no problem. Drop off was pleasant although required to go and find staff member. Negatives: counter staff tried selling further insurance even though I advised I bought extra cover with auto Europe. Staff member continued to insist on own company insurance and made several attempts to concern that in event of damage I would be liable. Vehicle fiat 500 had multiple areas of damage with some areas not documented required to delay leaving car park until all areas of damage accounted for. Overall good experience with no serious issues. "

My car had numerous dings, scuffs and dents on collection - no doubt Thrifty had charged the previous renters daft money to repair these, but hadn't repaired any, so the excess is just a money making exercise on behalf of the rental company. I took many photos on collection and return just to be safe. If my car had been perfect, then perhaps an insurance excess is reasonable, but not in these circumstances. And goodness - didn't they check it over for new damages. Why can't it be like car hire in the USA - no stupid insurance excess charges. "

" As requested by the counter staff we completed what I thought was a sensible quality check. We were given a list of damagers. On returning the vehicle the rep checked the car and highlighted a crack in one of the tail lights. The crack was approximately 3 cms long and hair thin to the point that at first neither of us could see it. As I could not prove that it was there when we accepted the car I had to pay 552 Euros. The car spent most of the time in an under ground car park. I am convinced that it was because I requested evidence that the tail light had been replaced that it appears it was. The fact that this crack was found is amazing and leave me wondering? The Insurance policy we took out will reimburse us. "

" Booking with Auto Europe was fine and we normally use you to get a hire car "
" Our flight was delayed by 3 hours and we arrived late in the evening at Palma Airport. We were very pleased to find the checkout desk still open and a very efficient staff member quickly sorted out our car - so 10 out of 10. However on our returning the car, the man checking the car tried to claim that we had damaged the front bumper very slightly at the bottom as he found a very small crack. He said that this was not recorded on his sheets. As we were so late collecting our car and still had an hour's driving to get to our rented property, we had quickly taken photos all round our car and had not tried to cross check them with their paperwork. Our photos, which were taken in poor light did not show any crack, and we also found it almost impossible to see a crack on his photos as they were not very clear either. The car had done 25k Kms and there were quite a few marks all round the car. We had an argument for over 10 minutes over this and The Thrifty/Hertz man eventually gave in, I am pleased to say. So although pleased at the eventual result, it did cause us a lot of concern. So we would give a mark of 3 on the return of the car "

" Our flight was cancelled with less than 12hrs notice(not your problem) we called on the day explaining we would not be travelling on the original date. We provided the new flight details. We were told the booking could not be ammended and was advised to turn up at the Thrifty desk and an extra day could be added on. We did this only to be told the whole booking was cancelled and we would have to pay full booking again. We called AutoEurope and was told they would not be able to look at escalating this unless we waited 2 hours at the desk. We were already 30hours delayed on our holiday and had no choice other than to pay again "

" Ordering online was very easy and the options for the insurance were good, but I was left a little confused with what I purchased regarding the insurance as mentioned when I picked the car up at Thrifty they said that insurance was invalid and I should take it out with them! "

However, it was dirty inside / outside on collection. It had 30km of Adblue left in the tank, meaning I had to stop to refill on the initial journey to the hotel. The window washer bottle was also leaking and it was unable to hold screen wash. Outside of this I have had no issue. "

" The car itself was great (or so I thought) but I noticed a long, very obvious scratch on the bonnet which was NOT in the notes of damage. Fortunately I took photos and got staff to record it, but even then when I returned the car they tried to claim it was new damage!! I quickly won that argument, but they then highlighted some very minor damage to paintwork above the front light. I hadn't seen this before but it appeared to me to be covered by the video I had taken initially. They disputed this as the video wasn't 100% clear. I refused to pay but they charged me an EXTORTIONATE £132 without my consent. Even IF, and it's a big IF, I had caused the damage, it could have been repaired for £10 - 20 easily. "

" The Hertz staff at Madrid were rude and pushy, trying to sell us lots of things we did not want or need, and insisting we had no insurance. Then the car they gave us had a boot size 30% smaller than we'd booked and we struggled to fit our bags in. Then when drove off to find that there was a screw in the front tyre and we were losing pressure. There was no spare tyre to change it. We called Auto Europe for advice but we're cut off. We drove slowly towards Lisbon and got there eventually, but they wouldn't swap the car cos it was Spanish. They took our car and patched up the tyre. We were given a much smaller car for a day but not offered a discount on our booking, then when we got our car back they'd also refilled the petrol and charged us their rate for it. When we complained when we returned the car in Seville they just have us a Hertz customer service email. "

" I emailed the address on the rental agreement and didn't receive a reply. I mentioned this on the return of the vehicle and was politely told that I should have called. If email is not going to be monitored then please remove it as an option. First and last time with thrifty. "
" Collection was relatively straightforward until it came time to inspect the vehicle. There wasn't a panel on the vehicle without some kind of paint or dent damage. As a client I was expected to inspect the dark coloured vehicle in a dimly lit underground car park. Given that the online reviews of Thrifty that I was able to read were not very complimentary extra effort had to be made to identify each and every external fault on the car. The staff response seemed to be that it would be ok. There was no apology for the state of the car. Internally it was clean but as an English speaking driver it was frustrating to have the display in German and I never did find a way to change it to English. Our plans changed and the vehicle was returned 24 hours early. I was not expecting a refund but was disappointed that we were still charged to top-up fuel. Overall given the state of the vehicle we will look for a different supplier for our next hire. "

The AutoEurope comprehensive insurance is nothing but a swindle, so was forced to take out Thrifty insurance, which made the whole experience very expensive. AutoEurope borders on mis-selling, and shall be taking this up with the relevant authorities unless a sensible explanation is forthcoming, and advising in private and in public that people do not use AutoEurope. " Car hire was great, only issue was the vehicle. Although it was a very new vehicle it had a considerable amount of external minor damage. All wheels were kerbed, nearly all the bodywork had scratches and minor paint damage. We even found additional damage to the bumper. Seems such a shame vehicle had so much minor damage although you can see why after driving around Seville. "

I contacted Auto Europe the next day and I am not able to get a refund of any type - a complete waste of money and time. " The car was fine. The staff on the desk were very courteous and efficient. My issues are related to when I dropped the car back at Seville airport. I was told to drop off the key in the box as I was arriving at 6 am before they opened. THERE WAS NO BOX in the return area. I spent 30 minutes looking for one getting more stressed by the minute. Eventually I was advised by a motorist to try the terminal where I did indeed find a drop box. It would have been so simple to mention where the box is situated. All the other companies have boxes in the drop off area except Hertz and Thrifty. I still have not received my final document completing the rental as I stated I was not there for the final inspection and transfer. "

There were dents and scratches all over the car making it difficult to keep track of any potential new scratches whenever we got back to the car. Also, halfway through our journey the check engine light came on and the engine made funny sounds. Then it went back to normal. This happened a few times over the course of the weekend and was intermittent so we didnt know whether to report it. "

The truth was they had no small cars and I had to take a huge ford automatic car, absolutely useless for my needs. It was that or nothing. After complaining to Auto Europe I was offered a Ford Fiesta which was acceptable. If I hadn't booked with Auto Europe I would have been ignored. I had to return the original car so I lost a days holiday and it cost £11 in petrol. "

" Booked Opel, ended up with an old SKODA. When checking the car, there were 28 dents !!! Looked like it has been in a demolition derby ! Thrifty tried to sell me insurance that I already had and were quite rude when I politely declined, telling me my insurance was rubbish. On the 3rd day in Andorra the car would not start and when we called the number provided, no one spoke English. Fortunately, the hotel staff were great and arranged everything for us. The Thrify mechanic turned up at 19.30 that evening, meaning we could not use the car all day - could not go to the ski resort. Mechanic said dead battery and charged up for us. On last day leaving hotel again the car would not start and hotel helped start with jump leads - meaning we were delayed leaving by 2 hours ! Only just made our flights home from Barcelona. Without doubt the worst car hire we have ever experienced. Certainly will NOT be booking with Thrifty again "

Fortunately I realised in time that he had already added this on (240 Euros approx I seem to recall). When challenged, he offered no apologies but proceeded to tell me I was making a mistake in not taking his insurance up!! He corrected the "error" and followed this up with a warning that I would not be able to make any more changes. By contrast, the guy at the drop off couldn't have been nicer. PS the guy's conduct at Basel Airport (French Side) for National/Enterprise (we also hired this through Auto Europe) was exemplary in every way. "

" I use Thrifty because you get Hertz service. But you need to give better information about pick up at Málaga airport if you are NOT getting off a flight. Under the new arrangements, the pick up desks are situated in the baggage hall and are therefore only accessible to disembarking passengers. If, like me, you want to spend a couple of nights in Málaga before picking up Hertz/Thrifty car, you need to go directly to the drop-off point which is on level one of the car park and where they have a small office. Once I had worked this out for myself and found the place, the staff were very helpful. But it isn't easy to find, especially if you are arriving from Málaga via the excellent train service, especially as movement between the floors of the car park can be very difficult. "

I was then astonished to be told the car did not have Breakdown Cover -which I was forced to buy, 60 euro for 2-weeks. I could get a years cover for the same price in the UK. On my next car hire, I expect to be told to pay extra if I want a steering wheel fitted. !! "

" The car was terrible to drive. I am not sure whether it is how the Fiat 500 should be but gear changes (automatic car) were very clunky and it generally sounded like it was going to break down at lowish speeds. Had we had time I would have returned it, but time was short on our holiday so I just lived with it. "

" I reserved a Renault espace 7 seater car but got a VW Cadi max 7 seater van. It was all they had so i had no choice. It is a van and could not be considered equivalent to a Renault Espace. I will not be booking through you again. "
