Be savvy when driving to Spain

A hot topic in the press this week is how holidaymakers choosing a driving holiday are being targeted on the stretch of road that runs from the French border to Alicante. The AP7 is a main Spanish highway and over the past year has seen approximately 60 car thefts. The reported thefts are from people travelling in foreign-plated vehicles. These vehicles are targeted because the thieves known that the majority of people driving them are tourists, and will have valuables with them in the vehicle.

A few of the underhand tactics used to get motorists to stop their vehicle are for the thieves to fake a breakdown at the side of the motorway and ask you to stop and help. After you pull over and get out of your vehicle, they then distract you, whilst one of them gets into your vehicle and takes what they can easily grab.

The advice given to anyone thinking of travelling by car to Spain, or any foreign country is the following: make sure that all valuables are locked away. If you do need to leave your vehicle, make sure it is locked. Leave a copy of your passport, credit card information and insurance documents with someone back home. Try and also have an emergency number written down and kept on you at all times, as most people these days only have numbers stored into their mobile phone.

If you are thinking of planning a Spain road trip why not make it that little bit easier on yourself and book a hire car. Here at Auto Europe you can collect a car hire at Alicante Airport and tour the gorgeous Costa Blanca region in comfort.
