Looking through some old photo albums, I came across the pictures of my first holidays abroad, a thousand years ago. 18 years old. Italy in the summer, unbelievably hot and exotic looking. To commemorate graduating high school, me and a few friends set off to conquer the Mediterranean!
We picked up a car hire at Pisa
Airport, after a discussion involving a writing board, some spreadsheets and a Thelma and Louise poster demonstrated that was the cheapest way to travel around. In retrospective, the Leaning Tower was, to be quite honest, rather disappointing. It's a tower. Lopsided. Not much else to it.
But to be fair, at 18 everything sounds exciting and cool and we had the time of our lives taking ingenious pictures pretending to hold the tower and keep it from falling amid lots of giggling and prattle with our impromptu tour guide, an Italian student who tagged along for most of our journey and who spoke very little English, but had a real knack for hand gestures and picking good restaurants. Or as good as unemployed 18 year-olds could afford, at any rate ;)
Besides Pisa we also visited other cities in Tuscany with our Italy car hire
, the most memorable being Florence, which is absolutely gorgeous, with its graceful buildings and world-famous art. Might try and take a trip to Italy again this year, see how it compares to the memories made by my 18 year-old self! Any suggestions of places to visit? What are your favourite Italian destinations?
