Anyone with a drop of common sense knows that March is not the time to go to the beach. Not in Europe, at any rate. But as it so happens, in my boyfriend's mind, Portugal is a wondrous land of sun and warmth that doesn't let itself be defeated by such flimsy obstacles as winter.
Apparently after getting tired of listening to me whine about what a wonderful time I had in that lovely southern corner of awesomeness and why oh why couldn't I go back right now, he booked us a weekend in the Algarve. We picked up a car hire at Faro
Airport, and after much discussion and almost hitting a wall, my boyfriend finally gave in to the fact he can't drive on the right side of the road and finally handed me the wheel.
We managed to find our hotel without further incident and even though he wanted to spend the afternoon in the hotel's heated pool, I managed to drag him to the beach with me. The best thing about going to the beach out of season is that there's hardly anyone around, and there's something entrancing about lording over this huge stretch of golden sand.
The weather was sunny and warm, though not so much that I felt tempted to try the water. But apparently I'm six years old when faced with the words 'I dare you'... The hardest part was that first dive, after that the hard part was getting out again... The next day we went off to explore the region.
The best thing about having a car hire in Portugal
is that you can easily get anywhere you want. We had lunch in Lagos, went shopping in Portimão and tried out Albufeira's famed nightlife. It was a great weekend and I can't wait to go back!
