Man Made Beaches: Is salt water over-rated?

A welcoming trend that seems to have caught on around the world is the addition of man-made beaches in busy city centres and park land areas. Some may even say it's the best idea since sliced bread!

Those visiting the historic city of Brisbane, Australia for the first time may be shocked to wander across the little oasis of sand in the middle of the city centre. Streets Beach is treated with as much respect as any other beach would be; it has life guards watching over the swimmers and is surrounded by palm trees and other sub-tropical plants.

You would think that the coastline of Portugal has enough beaches to keep a country happy; but apparently not as Mangualde in the central Portugal added its very own man-made beach in 2011. The beach opens between June and September and throughout the summer months features live entertainment, plus it's close to the beautiful Estrela Mountains. You can pick up a car hire in Porto Airport and be in Manugualde within 1.5 hours.

The Japanese came up with the idea of building an in-door beach; that way you don't even have to wait for the sun to make an appearance to enjoy a day on the sands. The waters have the most perfect swimming temperatures and you can even hear the parrots squawking; yet there are no parrots flying around? Ocean Dome can accommodate 10,000 people and not one of them walks away with sun burn at the end of the day.

So; is salt water over-rated and will we see more of the man-made beaches popping up around the world?
