Policy of alcohol testers in your vehicle in France

From the first July 2012, it was intended that all cars on the French roads should have alcohol test equipment in the vehicle. This law was also applicable foreign tourists on holiday in the country. But now the law has been put on hold indefinitely.

The explanation is, among other things that it has been difficult to find approved alcohol testers, whose reliability motorists and police both could trust. However, we recommend that you as a driver still have an alcohol tester in the car if you go to France. This can be a good idea in case in order to avoid discussion with French policemen, who might think that the law should still be enforced.

The French authorities announced last year that it would only enforce the law from November 2012. This was later changed to the 1st of March 2013. But now the French Ministry has decided to drop the law. It is still possible to buy alcohol testers in many parts of France, as well as online. What one should be aware about when using a portable alcohol tester, is that it can take up to three minutes from the time you have had the last drink till it is possible to measure the exact amount of alcohol in your blood.

Please remember that the French alcohol limit is 0.5.Should you have any questions, about the alcohol tester with your car hire in France, then we kindly ask you to contact our customer service department.
