    Portugal's toll system

It seems our clients have been a little confused over what to do when driving in Portugal, as the country has a new toll system that has been up and running for a number of months now. Across the country there are two different types of tolls that you will come across: the man in the little cabin taking your euros and the newer SCUT tolls.

It is the SCUT tolls that are causing travellers an issue as they may not be aware that they are even driving on a toll road. The road authorities are aware that the vehicle you are driving in has passed through a toll as the vehicles license plate is recorded by a system of overhead devices.

At present there are four SCUT roads: A22 (Algarve), A23 (Torres Novas-Guarda), A24 (Viseu-Chaves) and A25 (Vilar Formoso-Aveiro).Currently you can obtain a pre-paid device at most post offices in Portugal which covers you for travelling on these roads, or you can make a payment at a PayStation up to five days after you have passed through the toll.

Auto Europe offers a number of different car hire suppliers in Portugal and most of them will have an electronic device fitted in the vehicle ; by taking a vehicle with this device you will be charged a fee directly from the supplier for the use of the toll roads.

The best advice we can give you is for you to do a little research on the areas in which you are travelling to and see if you will be using a toll road; if you are, then give us a call and we can find the best Portugal car hire for you!
