    Romantic City Break - Visit Bruges

    BrugesWe all sometimes need a break away from work and the pressure of our rushed lives. A romantic break away gives you the chance to spend quality time with that special person in your life. To spend this well earned time we have chosen Belgium. It might not be the first destination that comes to mind but it is considered of one of Europe's best kept secrets. It's a small country that you can easily drive through in less than three hours. If you take the time to stop and explore a little you will begin to discover the charm, beauty and history of this interesting country.

    Bruges is in West Flanders, this dreamy medieval city has many places listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is the ideal place to start a romantic weekend break. It is famous for its cobbled squares,narrow streets, canals, gabled houses, Gothic buildings and, of course, for its beer, chocolate and lace. Attractions in the city are numerous with quality museums, churches and great waterways. Justwander through the splendid architecture of the city and enjoy the market, the main square of the city, the stunning bell tower (Belfry) and the famous Burg square.Experience Bruges from a totallly different angle for your perfect romantic weekend:

    Boat Trips on the Canals: With a boat trip on the charming canals, you can admire fantastic views over monuments, historical buildings and picturesque bridges. During your journey, you'll learn aspects of Bruges that you would miss when walking. A great tip is to surprise your loved one with a bottle of their favourite wine and two glasses. Oh, and don't forget the flower of their choice!

    Horse and Carriage Rides: In the heart of Grote Market, horse and carriage rides are available throughout the medieval town. The ride lasts about 35 minutes and covers side streets, residences and the main attractions. A short stop is made at the edge of the Minnewater (Lake of Love) for the horses to feed and rest. Here, you can visit the peaceful Begijnhof, a 16th century group of small homes around an area covered in tall trees. The houses have been home to the Benedictine nuns since 1927. Here, you can set up a romantic picnic and spend some quailty time admiring The Lake of Love.

    Balloon Flight Around Bruges: For an extra special treat, organize a romantic surprise hot air balloon ride for two over the city at sunset with a glass of champagne. If it's the right time, maybe a proposal would be perfect!Eurostar runs up to 10 trains daily from St Pancras International to Brussels (journey time 1hr 43mins) with fares from £59.

    Bruges has its own airport, Ostend-Bruges Airport, but it is only available to a handful of airlines. Therefore, Bruges is more accessible by plane from Brussels Airport. There you can rent a car and drive to Bruges, 120kms away.Bruges has over 100 hotels, but it also has four million visitors a year, so book your room in advance.

    With a hire car you could also explore cities such as Gent or Antwerp and many other charming towns and villages in the nearby area.Enjoy your visit!
