See more of Mallorca with a car hire

The largest island in the Balearics, Mallorca is a fantastic holiday destination - not least thanks to its ever-tempting combination of sun and beautiful beaches. However, there's more to this pretty little island than you might think.

Indeed, while spanning just 50 miles across, Mallorca has real variety in terms of its landscapes - the mountainous west, for instance, is particularly scenic and well worth exploring. But in order to see Mallorca's diversity in all its glory, you'll really need to hire a car - this makes it so much easier to deviate from the well-trodden tourist path and discover the real Mallorca.

You can hire a car from Mallorca airport, which is a good idea because then you can benefit from having your own set of wheels from the outset. The added advantage of deciding to drive in Mallorca is that some of the roads here are incredibly scenic - so it's not just about finding a hassle-free way of getting from A to B, but also the experience of hitting the open road.

Among the most scenic areas for driving is western Mallorca, which has amazing coastal and mountain landscapes. What's more, it's also great for seeing a quieter, more rural side of the island.

Start your drive in Andratx and follow the C710 to Estellencs - your trip will start with a steep climb that offers gorgeous coastal vistas. Make sure you stop in Estellencs for a brief stroll, as this is one of the island's prettiest villages. Once you're back in the car, continue up the road to the Mirador de Ses Animes. From here, you'll get some utterly breathtaking views of the coast, so make sure you have your camera with you! Shortly after this, you can turn off on to the PM110 and follow the road to Puigpunyent. This is a particularly pretty part of the journey, as it takes you through scenery of olive groves and mountains. Once you reach Es Capdella, you can begin the return journey to Andratx.
