These winter holidays, my friend Jess thought it'd be a great idea to treat us both to a week skiing. Between the two of us, we're able to muster just about the grace of an elephant in a china shop, so the thought of me on top of a pair of skis trying not to topple over was enough to make me both giggle and hyperventilate into a paper bag.Despite my misgivings, off we went to Austria! When we arrived we weren't quite sure how we'd be getting around, but carrying our luggage for 5 whole yards was enough to convince us that picking up a car hire at Salzburg Airport was the way to go!
The next day we set off to conquer the slopes! Being first time skiers, we hired all of our equipment from the hotel and took a few classes just to get the hang of things. And if nothing else, 2 hours of getting remarkably familiar with the feeling of snow on my back taught me the single most important lesson anyone has ever learned about skiing.Dress in layers. It'll keep you warm and - best of all - cushion your falls. It won't help with the feeling of hurt pride when you realise the 12 year-old to your right is going faster than you - or, at any rate, didn't much in my case - but we can't have it all!
One week isn't nearly enough, but we've already started planning for next year! A car hire in Andorra will be the starting point for the best ski trip ever! I might even join the big kids' slopes ;)What about you? Tell me all about your ski stories!
