Top 5 free attractions in Rome

It's no secret to the roving traveller that Rome is not a cheap city to visit. Let's not forget that it is one of the most well-known cities in the world and is home to magnificent historic attractions. The average cost of a coffee alone is 2 euros, and they only give you tiny cups, not quite what us English are used to!If you are trying to stay within your holiday budget, here are 5 great free attractions.

    1. Trevi Fountain - The beautifully designed fountain is one of the world's most recognised and is said to have magical powers! If you throw in a penny, you are sure to return to Rome!

    2. Park Gianicolo - The park is a great place to admire the view over the city of Rome. There is a walk through the park that features many statues, plus in the summer season you may find yourself watching a traditional Italian puppet show.

    3. Crypt of Cappuchin friars - The small eerie space is home to several tiny chapels that are located below the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. It holds over 4,000 bodies which are believed to be Capuchin friars; the main attraction are the bones that have been nailed to the wall.

    4. San Clemente - Wander into this interesting church and you will see the variation in the interior designs. The church has a layering effect, as it was changed throughout the ages. There is a 12th century church, built upon a 4th century church, which was built upon a late 2nd century church; now that's allot of history!

    5. Spanish steps - To get a real feel for a city, one must throw themselves amongst it and the Spanish steps are a perfect place to do this! The stairs are the widest in Europe and take you from the Piazza Trinità dei Monti to the Piazza di Spagna.
