Would you fail a driving test if you had to re-take it?

Pass PlateAccording to The Independent half of Britain's drivers would fail their driving test if they were made to re-take it. This experiment was organised by Kia Motors UK and found that 50% of the UK's experienced drivers would fail their test if they were required to re-take it. That's a fraction better than the pass rate for new drivers at 42%.Damien Burke, an approved driving instructor, assessed candidates during the standard forty minutes test route according to the official Driving Standards Agency score sheet. He found that the proportion of experienced drivers committed a 'major' fault which would lead to an automatic failure in the real test. The most common problem he said was very poor observation, for example, failing to use mirrors and checking blind spots before pulling away from a kerb. There were also many other common mistakes drivers made, such as hesitation at junctions, speeding, following the car in front too closely (I know this one all too well, Mercedes drivers I've noticed do it the most when behind me!) They also found that men were overly confident and used excessive speed, while women drove more intelligently but were marked down for hesitation. The instructor Mr Burke also found that drivers have adapted very bad habits, these would not count against a candidate but are frowned upon; these include poor anticipation, approaching junctions far too quickly and coasting. This article made me chuckle at the fact that I had been saying drivers should re-take their practical test every few years, as well as Britain's Drivers are getting Worse, so am glad that I am not the only one thinking this way too. What do you think about the drivers on the roads these days? Are they becoming more dangerous?
