" I have used Auto Europe many times to book my car rental. The process of booking through Auto Europe was easy as usual. AVIS were disappointing due to their dishonesty over providing me with a much cheaper car than I had paid for and adding unauthorised charges to my invoice. "

The car was small for our needs (5 adults, 5 bags). I would have saved over 1/3 had I booked an intermediate SUV. In addition I have been charged for additional 'optional services' which I did not authorise and are unspecified. I was expecting to pay a one way drop off fee at the desk - the charge to my credit card was higher than I expected - when I queried this with the desk agent I was told that it was a hold on my card as a security deposit which would be returned at the end of the rental - the charge as the end remains the same due to the unauthorised 'optional services' mentioned previously. " We were to be getting a Toyota Corolla but during a walk round my wife noticed a damaged tyre sidewall on the passenger front as she has experienced difficulty with this kind of damage before we refused to take the car while the Hertz employee was saying it's noted and everything will be ok my wife and I decided not to accept the car and the employee said he would have to speak to his manager who in turn said we could have the Nissan Versa that was next to it which in turn was a basic model and did not have the spec the Corolla had we accepted this and the employee then gave the keys of the Corolla to the customer who was to get the Versa we pointed out the damaged tyre to the customer as they never got a walk round with an employee. It was later in the day when we were on our way to Whiistler that we realised they never changed the paperwork.We informed the Hertz employee at Calgary Airport when we were dropping the car off about the paperwork he just nodded and went on with his business off checking over the car,Overall I was dissatisfied with the way Hertz handled the situation and I would like to say this has no reflection on autoeurope "

She insisted vehemently that there was a deposit to pay of $750, despite my paperwork stating $450. In fact, the machine took $100. The car, when we collected it had a Service Maintenance Warning come on screen, we rejected this car, despite the manager informing us that this was wrong and it still had 5,000km left. This was an inappropriate response. We were not prepared to take this risk. In addition the car was filthy! The car we finally took was great, also not clean, but did the job well. "

Stopping for lunch 2hrs later we find a bulging side wall on the tire we didnt spot at the depot also can be seen in out condition photos we took. Then lost a full day of holiday trying to get it fixed. Luckily Hertz reimbursed us all but $17 of the $524 cost we had to pay for - but still lost a days holiday. "

First car given wasn't particularly clean and upon checking the vehicle, the front windscreen washers were inoperative (the rear washers were fine). I told him I would not be taking the vehicle in this condition and he then offered to swap to another vehicle, which was newer and in much better condition. No sat nav meant scrambling to get mobile add on for £25 to use android auto instead ,by extending my UK package abroad for roaming, which was panic ridden as I was in Vancouver & was not going to bother with mobile. Tired after 9 hr flight anyway. Certainly too tired to go back in & complain. No problems with return. Easy. Wish I had gone back in. Wish I had hired an SUV at least. "

" We used Google maps via my mobile phone using android auto. This saved us a hefty additional fee. So I would definitely get confirmation that this is available on any car being booked. It comes up directly on the vehicles media screen and can be controlled from there too. Auto Europe were easy to deal with, but to save any worries if booking an early deal, check your details thoroughly before submission, as any changes later can be done, but only after re-pricing your booking at that days price. I'd made a one and half hour mistake in our arrival time, and if I hadn't of paid fully in advance (Hertz will hold the car until midnight if you do), it would have doubled my rental price. "

" When we picked up the car there was a fairly large queue and only 1 staff on the desk with every person taking a long time to process this caused us to miss our ferry to Vancouver Island and pay for another one. The desk person was curteous but to be honest we just wanted to get sorted the car did have a black sticky smudge on the bonnet which I cleaned off as I didn't want to get penalised when I dropped it off and din't want to wait to report it back in the office which by now was queuing out the door and down the street. After much discussion and me finally showing them the details of 1st additional driver is free they relented. I hired a GPS which said payed locally 15 Canadian dollar per day no more than 99 in total. The man at the deal printed off many sheets of paper asked me to sign for the vehicle which I did because I was tired and already exhausted with arguing over additional driver only to find out on returning the vehicle they charged me £505.65 Canadian dollars. On questioning this they reduced this to 393.30 Canadian dollars. Despite showing them my agreement they said I had signed the agreement provided on pick up. Despite me telling them this was not explained and I was told something different they ignored my complain and advised me to fill out the feedback questionnaire! Absolutely appalling. "

" Everything was great except the condition of the car. I've got a free upgrade to a BMW series 5 vehicle but it turned out that it was not serviced prior to the rental. A couple of days into my rental period when I was far away from any cities and in the wilderness I've got mulktiple messages on the dashboard including: service is overdue; change engine oil; vehicle car battery is empty. At some point the car was overheating and there were no garages around that I could buy engine oil. Also the key would stop operating and when inside the car driving I would get a message that the key is not found. There was nowhere I could by replacement batteries for the keys. Made several phone calls to Avis after thoroughly reading the car handbook - one advisor suggested that there was a lever by the drivers seat to activate the lock/unlock; not the case. Another advisor suggested that the key fob battery was flat - not the case. Eventually had to take the car to Kelowna airport branch - a detour of approx. an additional 2hours/180km from our planned route. The gentleman we saw there very quickly identified the problem - a proximity sensor on the key fob opens the boot once near to the car. No-one had advised us of this. "

" We booked the hire car for 3 weeks. During our travels an engine warning light was displayed so we contacted Avis spending many hours on the phone trying to arrange an alternative. It took 3 days for them to exchange the vehicle during which time we could not use the car as intended. We were told to drop off the car 'empty' by way of an apology. Having done so we received an invoice for $236.19. We spent many hours on the phone trying to identify what this invoice was only to be found that it was an error. We have also spent many hours on the phone trying to find out how Avis plan to compensate us for all the messing around both during our holiday and the hours spent on the phone since our return and have asked to escalate to a manager on several occasions. Not once has a manager contacted us and we have only been compensated the 3 days that we could not use the car (after a battle) and £80! It is an insult and I will not intend to use either Avis or Auto Europe (by their association) again. Note - I have left it 7 weeks since receiving this survey before completing it to give Avis a fair chance of resolving the issue. It is evident that they do not plan to take any further action so I now feel it necessary to let people know about our experience. "

Which of course I agreed to, as it seemed a very good deal. He didn't specify that was a daily charge, nor did I sign or even see a revised contract for the upgrade. So you can imagine how annoyed I was when presented with a bill for over $400 after I'd returned the car. I had a lengthy phone call with Avis in which they agreed to halve the bill. However that is still $200 that I had not calculated for and I feel I was deliberately deceived by the Avis rep. I will not use them again. "

" I booked a pick up at 12 midday from Vancouver airport allowing me enough time to catch the 3pm ferry to Vancouver Island. I completed all the relevant paperwork via the ap to enable a swift pickup, however, upon going to pickup the car at 12:15hrs I was met with a long queue and 3 members of counter staff. After waiting until 13:50hrs and the queue still very long I was getting stressed about missing my ferry and managed to speak to a member of staff, I was pushed to the preferred queue and eventually picked up the car at 13:58hrd, an hour and 45 minutes of waiting. The attendant then told me that my car was not ready and would be at least another 30 minutes and offered me an upgrade for $46 a day, totally unacceptable. I eventually got my car but when I did a damage check and discovered a lot of scratches I wished to point these out to a member of staff, he refused to look at the car and said it was cosmetic damage and not to worry about it. Upon delivering the car back at the end of the rental I managed to speak to the manager and addressed my issues. This wasn't a problem with yourselves, but with Avis themselves. "

Luckily our taxi driver was still unloading car and offered to take us to the main terminal and the Avis desk. Now from here it just gets worse and worse. After arriving ahead of the 10am we had to then get upto the other terminal. When we arrived there was a long queue and only one person serving. It was OK we thought as we had done the fast track and when a manager appeared we approached him in good humour however we were met with disgraceful customer service and arrogance. Fast track not available and it was up to us to sort the problem. I was told to ask every member of the queue about moving forward. Not once did the manager offer a solution even when it was your companies mistake. Then to add to this terrible service my wife was talked to in a disgraceful unreasonable and unrespectful way. To the extent we are considering legal action for this harassment from the manager. I am glad to discuss this further and if nothing happens I will be going further with legal action against your company "

" We have just returned from our holiday in Canada to find that Avis have levied additional charges to our hire cost (contracted through yourselves) of Can$ 262.95. Their additional charges are headed "Non Pkg charges" - no further description. If that cost relates to fuel, then the sum is ridiculous! The car hire agreement stipulates that the car should be returned with a full tank. We filled up at Banff & were unable to fill up again near the airport because of serious roadworks and delays around Calgary. The journey from Banff to Calgary is around 145 km. The fuel expended on that journey can be the absolute maximum Can$ 35. Please contact Avis to remove or at least greatly reduce those absurd charges. Neil Richardson "

" The booking through Auto Europe was very easy and from the experience of this holiday I'd always recommend booking ahead before you go to confirm the price and avoid local sales taxes. The Auto Europe price was the best I could find and the whole experience was very efficient and easy. "

" Initial booking through Auto Europe was easy but on arrival at Avis they initially did not offer what had been booked eg no Sat Nav and insurance unclear. Problem with slow puncture on car as delivered which was not rectified at the time and resulted in a lost day at a tire repair shop on day 2 of a 30 day car hire. Car itself after that was excellent ( Ford Escape titanium) and very economical "

Paperwork was not good - seemed not to have fully grasped the auto Europe booking details - initial car offered had no sat nav - some confusion over level of pre authorised insurance - still unsure about additional driver as part of deal since did not require driving licence or other details ( ie additional driver details not required!!!) . No instructions offered regarding operation of the car. Within a few kilometres warning light advised of "tire low" - returned car, they checked and reinflated and sent us off - two days later tire low - slow puncture requiring a repair at my cost and although the overall cost of hire was reduced on presentation of the invoice, not sure how that will materialise in my account. Car itself was really good ( after initial problems with tire) - less happy with Avis processes and customer care. Also when booking through Auto Europe why the booking itself had not been honoured without my requesting all aspects of the booking. "

Original car condition was not very good, numerous bumps and dents which where highlighted, plus a number of large scratches on the side and roof of the car which I had to highlight. Car was booked to include GPS, this was not the case and when questioned I was told it was an extra, I showed the booking information and was then handed a separate GPS. During the rental the car got a puncture, I tried getting this repaired myself but was unable to. I got in touch with Avis and they where very unhelpful. After over 2 hours of telephone conversations I managed to get sorted by organising to exchange the car at a local Avis depot (North Vancouver). These where very helpful and I couldn't commend them enough "

In particular, when taking out full cover, it isn't with the rental company, but a third party excess insurance provider. When you understand it, it makes total sense, but took me a while to comprehend (and I'm a stickler for T&C's). All in all, happy, will likely use again.... But maybe not AVIS. "

" I was concerned that I had to sign for the condition of the car, which was described as having 'no damage', before I'd even seen it. The guy assured me I could come back if I found anything and sure enough the car had damage all over it ranging from a large key scratch on the front passenger door to scratches on just about every other panel. This delayed our departure as I then had to go back and wait in a lengthy queue to get hertz to agree the damage; so not a very good experience and one which could have been avoided if they had flagged up the existing damage on the form in the first place "

" Auto Europe is always very competitive and the booking process is easy and the terms are clear. The rental companies get clear paperwork from Auto Europe. I have used Auto Europe on several occasions and have always been satisfied. "
" The check in process took extremely long. The price to rent a satnav was about $17 a day which is extortionate for a 2 week rental (even if there is a maximum). It was cheaper to buy our own satnav. I think Hertz should review their prices for satnav rental. The car was fine even though it was scratched everywhere and the front number plate looked like it was going to fall off every minute. The return was speedy and efficient. All in all, we were satisfied with our experience. However, we had used Avis last time who provided a better car that had an in-built satnav for roughly the same price that we paid to Hertz. " Was given a very average condition car with lots of scratches and dents which were ,I thought, all identified on pick up. On return they immediately saw a scratch on the under sill and accused me of having done it. The suggestion was to hold $500 for repair. Thankfully after much argument an employee overturned the counter staffs view saying it was already a very old car and to let me leave without further penalty This action embarrassed me and really embarrasses a company like Hertz. Why charge people for scratches and dents then give you the same car still with the same scratches and dents which presumably have charged other customers to fix. Just a sad rip off system and demeans the company and its customer. I'll never rent Hertz again. "

One small point though: when giving back the key (out of bussiness hours), we have to write down the mileage and other informations but as I am on holidays, I had not pens... did have to go outside the building and borrow a pen at the hotel next door. " Terrible experience. Got charged more than the initial rental cost for winter tyres. They constanding were trying to upsell a better bigger car to me. I had to repeat several times that. Couldn't afford it. Ended up returning the car a day after picking it up because it was so expensive. I would recommend that every steer well clear of budget at vancouver airport. "

" Was somewhat annoyed that I had to pay for an additional driver and then another $20 CD per day to drive in Alberta. I was under the impression from the information when booking, that the additional driver was 'gratis'. I knew that I had to pay for a satnav but was annoyed when the counter staff said, Oh we can upgrade you to a Ford Fusion for an extra $20 per day! How much is a satnav per day? $10 was his reply! So why would I want to pay another $10? Annoys me intently!!!! "

" I was mucked around at pick-up. I wanted GPS and ended up paying for a larger car with integrated GPS, but the first car's system didn't work. I was then given a car that had an oil change warning light flashing. I ended up driving this away as it was the only realistic option. "

The office where I took the car said that I could either fill up before giving the car back or pay for a full tank otherwise. I chose to top up the tank as we had not covered many miles.
