The modern skyline placed against a fantastic backdrop of majestic mountains towering over the city makes Vancouver picture-perfect and a favourite postcard motif among North American cities.

Despite its rain-prone climate, Vancouver remains one of the favoured cities in Canada with rising quality of life and a vibrant multinational community which gives the city a special flair.

Auto Europe will assist you with booking a car hire in Vancouver at the best prices. In addition, we offer car hire in other Canadian cities such as Montreal, Toronto and Calgary. Be sure to book your next car rental in Vancouver with additional peace of mind by checking out the user ratings and comments posted by previous Auto Europe customers on our Vancouver car hire reviews page.

Drivers from abroad may be reluctant to drive in such a sizeable city. However, Vancouver drivers are known to be mild-mannered, helpful and even quite slow in traffic. Please note, seat belts are compulsory for both drivers and passengers, and headlights must be switched on at all times while driving your car hire in Vancouver. The signs on Canadian motorways are posted in kilometres and petrol is sold in litres.

Some streets are equipped with traffic lights which blink green instead of giving away steady green light. Such traffic lights will only turn red after pedestrians have pressed the button to cross the street. The cross streets at such intersections will usually only have a stop sign and no traffic lights at all. More information about driving in Canada in general can be found in our guide.

With plenty of above ground and underground car parks, finding a free parking space for your car hire should be hassle-free. Just as a reference, car parks in Canada are often called parkades. The only problem you may encounter would be spotting the facility in the first place since they are often located either underground or behind tall buildings.

Be sure to drive your car rental slowly and simply look for a parking sign. Over 6,000 parking meters are in effect in Vancouver. Few places offer on-street parking without meters. Please check the meter for possible exceptions, notifications and restrictions before paying.

    Geographic Information

Vancouver, the largest city in British Columbia, is a west coast seaport city with over two million inhabitants in its Metropolitan Area. Vancouver lies on the Burrard Peninsula north of the Fraser River and occupies an area of 44 square miles.

The cityscape is dominated by the nearby North Shore Mountains and the ocean. As a coastal city by the Northern Pacific, the city's climate is highly influenced by the vicinity of the ocean. Summers tend to be warm and dry while other seasons see a lot of rainfall. The average summer temperature is around 21°C, while in winter the average low temperature hardly goes under 0°C.

As Vancouver is quite close to the USA, you could also go on a road trip to Seattle or Portland!

    Public Transportation

Public transportation in the city of Vancouver is managed by Translink and features trains which run above and below the ground, public buses and a cross harbour ferry. The two types of trains are referred to as rapid transit and feature modern automated trains operating on two lines, the Expo Line and the Millennium Line. The third line, known as the Canada Line, takes passengers from Downtown Vancouver to the airport.

Buses cover a vast area of the city on a daily basis. The areas which are not frequented are served by community shuttles, and sometimes express lines with fewer stops are in service on busy routes. SeaBus is probably the most beautiful way to get from North Vancouver to Vancouver. In only 12 minutes you will cross the Burrard Inlet and get an amazing view of the city.
