Car hire in Montreal at the best prices

A wonderfully diverse city, Montréal is a vibrant and exciting city where numerous cultures mix. French is the official language, but English is also spoken which leads to a unique mismatch of civilisations. A car hire in Montréal is the prefect way to explore the city. You will quickly notice that the cities architecture is a wonderful blend of European architecture and contemporary design. Numerous cafes and restaurants litter the city round every corner. Take a wonder along the canal, sit in a stylish coffee house or visit one of its many 18th Century buildings - simply take in all that Montréal has to offer. The downtown district greets you with a large selection of fashionable shops and is a great place to expose yourself to the cities culture. With an astounding 90 festivals, numerous cinemas, comedy clubs, 250 theaters and dance venues, the city can't help but to come alive with the arts.

If you plan to visit Montréal during the winter seasons, don't be mistaken for thinking the city will slow down to a standstill. With longer nights, the locals tend to visit sugar shacks, pubs and many of the surrounding mountain ski slopes for some skiing and snowboarding. If the winter becomes too heavy, then Montreal's underground city, located under its Central Business District, is the ideal place to get away from the harsh weather above. An interconnected labyrinth of tunnels, the underground city links offices, hotels, shopping & events centres, metro stations, universities, commercial and residential buildings. In total there are 32kms of tunnels with 120 entrances and an additional 60 metro station. All of which have their own smaller tunnels, linking up to the underground city.

If you're interested in car hire in Montréal during your stay, then Auto Europe has partnered with numerous local car rental companies and is well positioned to help you arrange your car rental with minimum fuss. You can even consider driving to other amazing Canadian cities, such as Ottawa, only 165km. Let us help you, so why not contact us today!

    Traffic

Montréal like many major cities suffer from traffic congestion, especially during morning and evening rush hours. The city is interlaced with numerous one-way streets, which to a tourist can seem confusing. Likewise, with the traffic lights, which tend to mean slightly different things. A straight green arrow, for example, means that pedestrians have right of way. Only when it eventually turns to a green light do you have priority. Numerous examples of this exist and it is highly recommended that you check local traffic light rules before setting off in your hired car. In addition, speed signs are displayed in km and road signs are displayed in French, unless you are on one of Montréal's many autoroutes and bridges. Here the signs will be displayed in French and English. Don't forget to check out our general information about driving in Canada.

    Parking

The downtown district has plenty of on road car parking spaces. The spaces that have meters normally have them far back from the curb, so as not to get buried when snow arrives. Other parking bays have "Pay & Display" style machines with instructions in multiple languages. Although many parking bays are in effect until 9pm, it is recommended to always check the meters active times so as not to receive a fine, or worse, get towed away. Large shopping centres and many hotels tend to have underground parking and some even allow you to park for short periods of time.

    Geographic Information

Montréal is located within the province of Quebec, southwest of Quebec City and east of Ottawa. The city is distinguished by its two main rivers, the St. Lawrence River to the south and the Rivière des Prairies to its north. Climate can be temperamental with winter temperatures reaching as low as -15ºC. This period is often cold, windy and snow fall is common. Spring brings a combination of warm and cold weather. The average temperature is around 15ºC but varies between hot humid weather and snow. Summer time sees an increase in hot and humid days. The average temperature can be 24ºC but can reach as high as 30ºC and even seem warmer with the humidity. Although this time of the season sees warmer weather, you can still expect up to 13 days per month of rainfall. Once autumn arrives, you are greeted with a beautiful array of falling leaves. The average temperature is around 13ºC but falls to 6ºC around November time.

    Public Transportation

The public transport infrastructure is a very efficient and convenient way to get around the city quickly. The metro system is well organised, economical and operates between 5:30am and 12:30am (1am Saturday nights). The metro trains are clean and well-kept and tickets can be bought from either booths outside the stations or from ticket machines. The cost is approximately C$3 and you are able to buy a set of 10 tickets at a discounted price. Likewise, one-day and three-day travel tickets are available and can be a good option should you wish to use the network regularly. The network consists of 4 metro lines and 68 stations.

The bus network isn't as frequent as the metro but provides tourists with a good vantage point in which to see the city. The metro tickets are also valid for the bus network, although if you need to purchase a ticket on the bus, only exact change is accepted. In addition to the metro and buses, Montréal has a really good bike sharing system. Bike paths are available and well planned out. The system is the same as in other major cities where you pick up and drop off the bicycles at the bike stands.

Montréal taxis come in a variety of shapes and colours, therefore there is no standard style other than the light on the roof. Taxis are convenient but geographical knowledge can be seldom. It is therefore recommended to know exactly where you want to go as language skills also vary.
