" It was fine. Although we had booked the fast check in, it still took quite a while, owing to only one person looking after this area and two people, who seemed slow, in front of us. But better than not doing so because the queue was long otherwise. The car was rather too full of tech (it's hard to know how to put on the parking brake for instance) and the instruction manual only in French. A quick tour by a human would have helped this. The tyre pressures hadn't been re-set so we had to get help to turn off that warning light. And it wasn't explained to me that the slip on which the car reg was written had a QR code on the back to let me leave the car park, so my partner went off to find someone while I waited at the barrier. I would not hire that car again, on reflection, although that is not Avis' fault. It was good at fuel economy though. The drop off was excellent and very quick - more of the service should be like that. Also I was sent an email in French the day before we returned the car - why can't you send emails to customers in their own language? After all you have our address. "

" I arrived at the desk 40 mins ahead of schedule to be told rather bluntly that adjusting the booking was not possible unless I wanted to pay for one extra day. I suggested we make the drop off 45 mins earlier only to be told that was not possible either. A more experienced individual then stepped in to say, quite bluntly that they could move the pick up and drop off times by 30 mins. The same person then informed me that unless I paid extra for snow chains or snow tyres our reservation would be voided. I asked why and she proceeded to blame Auto Europe for not advising. I pointed out that Avis had emailed me with an oppoortunity to handle the paperwork ahead of collection and there was no mention of it there either. She then said that it's an Avis issue and was most insistenty we pay for snow tyres or chains. After much discussion she agree to honour the booking at no additional cost. However, the car we were given was poorly maintained and very little of external damage I photographed before driving the car was recorded on the contract. The car had been poorly maintained, it was high mileage and generated vibrations and rattles at various speeds. The clerk had made great attempts to say the car I was given was an upgrade. Had I had time and not just experienced poor service from the clerk I'd have retruned the vehicle. That they blamed AutoEurope and Avis was not a good start. This is clearly an Avis franchise that does not represent either brand positively. "

" The Auto Europe voucher told me to pick up the car from the Gare TGV in Montpellier which is a long way from the city centre and had to be reached by a tram and bus ride. When we got there just before 10 am for the pickup the Avis desk was empty. When it became clear that no one was coming we asked at the Sixt desk next door. He told us the address on the voucher was actually the main railway station Gare St Roch in the centre of town. We had to take the bus and tram back to this station to get the car. This cost us well over an hour and a great deal of stress!! This is not good enough. "

The lady really tried to upsell the car which was annoying as the price is so inflated already. Told us in effect that we had a tiny vehicle. When we picked it up it was absolutely fine for us and we're glad we stuck to our guns. We got stuck between the two barriers for 15 minutes whilst trying to exit the airport. The barcode didn't work. Within 15 minutes of driving the warning messages started going off and we had to pull in as they were in German and we don't speak German. After a google we realised it was something about the tire pressure and so released a bit of pressure then continued to drive really slowly worried they were still too high and we'd have a blow out. Then it felt like I was starting to lose the power steering and also worried about that on the mountain roads. It was only as we arrived at our destination that a friend told us that there is a feature where the car tries to right itself if you go over the lines of the road. They first hours journey was so stressful. The car itself had very little power going up hills which added to the stress. Avis could have told us about these new features of a car and switched the language to English. After we realised the car wasn't at fault apart from it being without any power it was fine the size entirely suitable for the windy roads and dropping off was also fine. "

The second car also performed badly (though nhouse ot dangerously). Very old, it could not cope with hills In the heat and stress of the changeover I left a large bunch of keys in the side pocket of the car. For the next 2 weeks I tried to get Avis to check if they had been found (multiple emails/phonecalls). Despite assurances that they would check, they never did. Even when I returned the second car, they could not be bothered to check their lost property and I had to return to Britain without my keys. I found them utterly unprofessional and chaotic. Surely they keep a record of property left behind in returned vehicles? Only the young staff at the return stall in the drop-off carpark behaved with anything like the professionalisn one should expect. A terrible experience. "

" I was not able to book a hire car beyond 5pm, I telephoned and was told I could have out of hours, then you contacted me and told me this was not possible. I therefore had no option but to pay for a transfer to Grenoble, pay for a hotel and pick up a hire car in the morning. When I arrived at Grenoble airport the hire place was open til gone 6 pm and many people were picking up cars. I telephoned you to see if you would pay for the extra they were charging to upgrade and you refused. Basically between you and Avis failure to communicate correct opening times I spent an extra €130 and lost a mornings skiing. "
" Found hire company was still open on arrival, they agreed to swap booking from city to airport for extra cost to upgrade as they had no similar car, this cost increased with taxes, we refused, they found a smaller car, this cost then increased again when we went to pay. In the end we declined and got a lot of abuse for wasting their time. I am still not sure if they were being helpful but incompetent regarding the increases or pulling a fast one. The cost was going to be in the region of €150 extra. "

I believe that that they had just had a bad experience with a separate customer and their systems were apparently down, but they appeared not to know about my booking initially, then we were handed keys to a car and simply told it was an upgrade (but who knows?). They of course spent their time trying to flog me additional no cover insurance (which I had already got from you but which undermined my confidence in my booking with you) and the car had a gouge in the rear offside wing which hadn't been noted (the metal work was punctured), it had various other scuffs and the fuel wasn't full (though we handed it back full). On the return an Avis chap in the car park asked for the key and asked me to sign a hand held computer pad. The document I have received by email, subsequently, appears to claim that 3.63 euros is due on figures that bear little resemblance to my hire with you and it would seem that a dispute is looming. I go through you to avoid this hassle. "

" I have not yet received an invoice/receipt for this hire. My bank details show that I have been charged an additional £81.27 for this hire over and above the £134.99 paid to Auto-Europe. The tank was not full of fuel although the dashboard gauge suggested that it was full - otherwise how could I spend €20 to fill up when I drove only 130K ? Pick-up and drop off at Terminal 2F was a very long way from Arrival/Departure at Terminal 2D - I was advised to drop off at Terminal 2D which I did within the 48 hours of the start of the hire. The lady on reception at Avis did not appear to know how to take money from a client to pay for insurance and so none was taken at the time! No doubt I would have had no cover if there had been a claim! I have hired from Avis on many previous occasions and am a Preferred customer - this was my worst experience with them so far "

Once we left the airport my son noticed some food stuffed down the side of the seats, when we arrived at our destination we found more food in-between the seats, used children spoons down the side of back seats and also a used yoghurt pot in the back of the front seat pocket. I spoke directly with Avis on the issue but the condition of the car was disgusting and especially during a time when you expect the highest of cleaning. " One hour queue to get to the agent. Agent persistently attempted to get us to upgrade van for 140 Euro. Refused, eventually paid 20 euro for an upgrade, as it was clear they didn't have our vehicle and I'd been there an hour and a half. Agent said they would email the rental agreement. No email received. Went to collect vehicle. Van had cosmetic damage, but there was no agent present to review damage before I took the vehicle. Eventually found someone after 20 mins to compile damage report, and show me how to drive the van (column shift automatic). Within 20 minutes of starting my journey, the low Adblue warning light came on so I had to stop and buy 15 euro can of adblue. On return, was in a queue of 20 cars to return the van. Had to wait 40 mins for an agent. Agent reported the boot of the van needed hoovering therefore would charge me for cleaning. I complained that with 7 passengers this was inevitable. He told me to raise the issue of cleaning and the need for Adblue with the agent at the check in desk. Went to the check in desk, 10 people were waiting, so with a flight to catch I left. I have never received a rental agreement. I have rented 20 - 30 cars a year for over 25 years and have never, ever experienced such poor service. I will never use Avis again "

I spent less than five minutes brushing a few leaves and other normal dust you get in cars after use out and then they said it was fine. I was not impressed with Avis at all! "

" Always have a problem with Avis. They never update damage reports on cars so I always have to go back to the desk to acknowledge unrecorded damage. This time car showed low tyre pressure so declined as previously I had a car from them that said low tyre pressure and they assured me that it would be ok just that the warning had not been reset. However the tyre went completely flat a day later and they charged me for damage to the tyre! This time they gave me a replacement car only to find after driving off that the car was only 3/4 full. So returned to desk to drop off and they said they would record it. Unfortunately when I returned the car I filled the car completely as it is impossible to judge how much fuel was going in as you have to start and stop the car to update the car fuel gauge so I ended up unnecessarily paying for 1/4 tank fuel. On another occasion they charged me for not filling up the car with fuel when returning the car despite me telling them that the faulty gauge did not show full when it actually was. "

But the car rental agencies always try these tricks (also with insurance) to squeeze extra money from you at the start of the rental. I find this really annoying especially from large companies like Avis, Hertz and sixt. I find europcar are usually the most straightforward. you should explain these hidden charges upfront. "
" I rented in Mulhouse but asked when I ordered the car for travel to also include Germany and Switzerland. When I got to the check in counter at Avis I was told there were no winter tyres (which is a requirement for Swiss motorways) so was then forced to hire snow chains as a precaution at extra cost. These additional costs are annoying and not correct especially as I already made it clear about my travel intentions at the outset when booking. "

I am still awaiting refund of my deposit a full 8 days after returning my car, 4 days earlier, which is not a very good service really. "

Having paid in advance for all the "recommended" additional insurance ahead of time as advised by Auto Europe only to be told by front desk ( Avis) that the insurance is worthless and if i wanted peace of mind i will need to take an additional insurance to avoid 1000 EURO charge / BLOCK ON MY CREDIT CARD. Its time Hire car insurance was regulated. The hire companies make more money out of customers by using scare tactics at the front desk when you are at your most vulnerable especially as you don't have time to arrange alternative insurance. Don't be mislead by the low up front price, i paid more for the insurance that i did for the 10 days hire. "

We then waited for 2hrs 45 minutes for a taxi sent by Avis to return us to the original collection office. Waited a further 40 minutes to be dealt with. The 1st replacement vehicle did not hold our luggage. Another 20 minutes to sort out a 3rd vehicle. We finally arrived at our accomodation 8 and a half hours later than expected only to find out that we could not check in until the following morning. "

It was extremely busy so not enough time to thoroughly check the car to make sure that everything was ok - had to wait 1 hour 15 mins before I got to the counter. I was not happy with the car as it felt too small with child seats so I spend over 2 hours on the phone locally to try and sort the problem. I eventually got through to the right person and he told me to return to the rental office and get them to get the right class of car that I had booked. I returned and it was all sorted - another 3 hours involved here. It would be helpful if rental agencies make it very clear that they do not have the correct car requested and so will be dropping a class. I would have happily taken a smaller car and then could have changed to the one I had booked 3 days later when I had to return to the airport to pick up family. This would have saved me the 2 hours on the phone and the extra 3 hours going back the following day! "

" The car of choice is seldom available at the time of use. Since all the booking is done on line, the repeated data and time in queues to pick up the car is extremely inefficient and irksome. Contacting them over lost property is also very difficult as they don't respond over the phone or email from the vehicle location - eventually customer services do help, but even they suggest that a lack of answer from locations is commonplace. We'll see if I ever get my property back; which after all should be simple given that Avis have all contact details relating to the person who hired the car. Very poor customer care. "

" I always find your prices great and info about where the desk is ie in airport/shuttle very accurate but this time you advertised as at airport but wasn't expecting a shuttle otherwise everything you organised was delivered avis had some problems that morning out of your control "

" I had to queue over an hour to pick up the car, which was frustrating. More annoying is the way the staff were very pushy in trying to make me upgrade the car to a bigger one. The first thing they said was that they could do me a better car for "only" 17 euros a day, which would increase the overall cost by more than 50%. I know what size of car I want, please just give me it. If you spent less time upselling, you'd clear the queues faster. What I'd also like is a better idea of what actual makes and models you stock. I get a car that's roughly the size I need, but never the one suggested. "

" VERY UNHAPPY The vehicle had several scratches on the paintwork not all of which were marked on our copy of the form so we had to go back and point them out. It turned out they were marked on the office copy but not ours. Done by previous customers but not repaired. Unfortunately some further very minor damage was done to the hire car, not by ourselves, during our rental period. The damage was to the small plastic indicator cover located on the drivers wing mirror. This plastic cover is very quick, easy and cheap to replace. We pointed the damage out on return of vehicle and were told we would be charged for replacement of the complete wing mirror at a cost of £260.09. The wing mirror was absolutely fine and in full working order. We had not taken the excess insurance cover offered and were quite prepared to pay for replacement of the damaged part. However we are being charged for much more than that, completely unnecessarily. This is an absolute disgrace on Avis's part, a dishonest scam as they clearly only need to replace the plastic cover. I have photographic evidence. I am interested to see if you respond to this. Very unhappy customer. "

I stood (no seating available) in line for one hour and twenty minutes after arriving. My party were very tired from a very early flight and we had a 2.5 hour journey ahead of us. " Very disappointed in Nice Airport Avis service. Asked for a manual car and had to go back from car park twice because we were given automatic! Took us an hour extra! Counter staff were rude and arrogant except for attendant in car park who was very sympathetic and surprised that the counter staff kept giving us the keys to automatic cars. Each time we received car keys we were told the wrong bay number also which is why the car park staff had to help us. So inefficient! We hire cars 3/4 times annually and have never come close to this level of ineptitude! The dash tyre pressure light and oil light were on when we got the car but we'd changed so many times that we just took that car. We will never use Avis in Nice again. "

When unlocking the car we noticed there is a baby seat but we were unable to remove it. We were left with the car not fit for 4 people, zero service and very disappointing experience from the start. "

We later had smoke from the bonnet and discovered that the feeder pipe from filler to engine had been left unconnected. Engine oil was dangerously low as it had sprayed over the hot engine and we had to replace it. We were then charged €3.72 per litre plus a service charge plus a surcharge amount for fuel shortage when the local price never exceeded €1.50 per litre. I am contacting Avis Customer Service but expect little. "

" I have never had any significant issue with Auto Europe, the website is efficient and on the odd occassion an amendment to a reservation has been necessary it has been done efficiently. My impression of Auto Europe has however declined because of this experience as I doubt I am alone in being treated like this by Avis so AE must shares some responsibility for not bringing Avis into line. " Collection process was speedy and I was offered the choice of a Renault Twingo or a Fiat 500, I opted for the Fiat 500 as that is what I had booked and I was familiar with driving one. It only became apparent later in the process that it was a cabriolet which I didn't really want (noisy on the road and a small boot opening) but accepted it. The assistant ran through the agreement 'on-screen' and all the major data was correct but I wasn't told that they considered this an upgrade I would have to pay extra, this only became apparent when I had time to read the single page paper contract they gave me at the desk. I was told the car was new with no damage but it had over 15,000 k on it and had many small but not registered scratches, far from being new this was the highest kilometerage car I have ever had from Nice in 11 years of renting. They promised they would email the full contract to me but this did not arrive and in any event it is not a good idea having no paperwork issued at the desk as it may be difficult to satisfy the police in France or Italy that you are legally in possession of the car. The car clean and was fine throughout the hire and the return process was without problem. I now see they have debited my credit card with a charge of 183.57 euros on top of what I considered a very expensive hire in the first instance - being about double what I am used to paying for Nice car hire on a Group A car. The excess charge only includes an upgrade I didn't request or know about intially, Location Surcharge and Vehicle License Fee both of which were included in the lump sum prepaid hire - I have already raised a query on their online system and shall vigoursly reject any additional charge. This is my first experience of hiring from Avis and will be my last, this organisation appears to be a short distance from fraudulent in their actions and in my opinion is setting back the car hire industry a few years. I have had odd issues with Europcar over the years and the many hires I have had with them at Nice, but they were always sensible in the end and rectified their errors but they never tried anything like Avis have and that includes giving one or two Group upgrades for free on occassions when they didn't have the Group car I had reserved. "

" There was a one-hour wait in the queue at Toulouse airport. No other agency had any queue at all. There were 4 desks but only two had staff. The process for contract signature takes 10 minutes per customer. Avis needs to re-engineer this process so that it is a lot more efficient - it could be done in 3-4 mins if properly designed. The drop-off location was closed at 20:30 although the sign said it would be open until 21:45. so I walked to the main desk (long queue again) and then had to go back to the garage to drop the keys in the key holder. In total, I wasted 1.5 hours of my life. "

" As usual Auto Europe provide a good service. We had to change our dates after our first reservation and there were no problems with the change and the additional fee for the extra days was correctly dealt with. I do look at other Agents, but Auto Europe always seem that bit better to me !! "

I incurred a great deal of stress by the delay,missing our apartment reception,and 10 days of driving a vehicle I detested. "

" The staff would not allow collection of the vehicle until the exact booked time, even though cars were available. They were generally not customer friendly. The car broke down after one hour with electronic problems stating that the car was broken on the dashboard. Upon calling Avis 6 times a repair truck came and took the car away after 7hours, following which I was not called back twice by Avis to arrange a replacement car. I called Avis the next morning and was told I had to go back to Avignon personally to collect a replacement car - meaning a 3hour round trip and essentially being without a car for 24hours. During this period I had to cancel a dinner appointment and a planned village tour visit. Overall I feel Avis has a terrible customer service. A replacement car should have been brought to me and swapped for the broken one simultaneously. No apology was given nor offer to reimburse the lost day. Zero stars. "

However, prior to booking this vehicle I made another booking through Auto Europe which I cancelled. The money was taken out of my account straight away and I have yet to receive a refund despite this being over 3 weeks ago. I was told i would receive the refund after 7 working days which hasn't been the case. I am currently seeking advice from solicitors about how best to begin a formal challenge to get the money from the cancelled booking back. Auto Europe shouldn't offer flexible cancellation policies if they cant reimburse the money quickly, people rely on this money for holidays. "

I was also informed that the fuel gauge was faulty and was only registring 3/4 of a tank of fuel. This turned out to be untrue as when l filled the car up the fuel gauge registered full. I subsequently returned the car with 3/4 of a tank and was was again served by Jerome who tutted at me and denied all knowledge. The car also had alloy wheel damage and scratches on both passenger side for handles. "

Avis had queries over our booking unfortunately involved a call to Auto Europe at the desk, The Avis agent was hostile towards the AutoEurope agent over the phone. For example, the Avis agent refused to offer his name, and later remarked to us that he, 'no longer wanted to speak to that man'; not really what a customer needs to hear. Again, I think he was having a bad day. We got our car and child seat, so from that point of view, all good, just unfortunately was all conducted under a cloud of frustration from the Agent. My gut tells me it was something to do with the fact that our booking was an Auto-Europe one rather than AVIS, but that's just my opinion. "

" We requested a Garmin or Nuvi but they insisted that the car navigation was same. Well, it is garbage and kinda ruined our trip. They put all functions in one knob and you can't find services, nor directions, a least if they gave you an instruction manual because you can't even google cause you dont know what make it is. A one week road trip from Paris to Manaco and back and around countryside could have been so nice if they just would have given us a Garmin. "

" Ordered an automatic and paid over £630 for it! The car supplied was an estate car one size bigger than I had ordered! The car lasted 2 days before the plastic/rubber piece under the wheel arch that protects the engine fell off and got caught up in the wheels so we had to pull it off! Avis sent out a Mechanic who told me to take car to office in Beziers to get a replacement! Did this on the Wednesday and were supplied with a manual Renault Clio, 2 sizes down from original supplied! Asked if they could change it for an automatic, they refused, so asked them to get one for 5 days later, also refused! "

" Main problem is that on a Saturday more counter staff are needed to deal with the arriving passengers. My flight was delayed so the counter staff were only needing to process passengers from my flight. There was only one member of staff on duty and although he worked as fast as possible, with 4 people in front of me, I was waiting for around 30 minutes and that is unacceptable. The hand back on the Tuesday was very fast and two members of staff were present - really require at least this level of staffing on a Saturday too please. "

" One slight criticism: the car had not been washed and had also been passed off to me as having no scratches etc. After wiping away dirt and dust, I found four significant marks which meant that I had to go back to the office, queue for 20 minutes then go through the process of confirming the pre rental condition of the vehicle.
