When we arrived, the car I had requested was not available and they gave me a Fiat 500 which, if I had booked, I would have saved £25 I chose a higher grade because I didn't want the Fiat 500 but this was all they had available. I therefore felt cheated. This very much disappointed me. The car they first offered us had a dent in it, we asked for a different car which they were able to offer. The car had a fault on it so the alert kept going off throughout the journey. The return was very easy and speedy. "

" Apparently the car I rented didn't come with snow chains, so I was told it was 25 euro to upgrade. I was asked to sign in agreement, but not shown the full agreement as the screen was malfunctioning. It transpires that the whole car was upgraded and I was duly charged an extra 259 euro for the privilege, when I only believed I was upgrading the tyres. Wholly unacceptable and budget are refusing to communicate saying that the form was signed, I accepted it. I am not a French speaker just for reference, I rent cars in France every year and have never experienced this. Never again I'm afraid. "

" The whole experience left us feeling that we were being held to ransom somehow, and that we were expected to part with extra money now that we were standing at a foreign airport looking forward to getting to our holiday destination. It is clear, communication between the broker and the renter is inadequate. The effect of this is a feeling of unease and a complete lack of transparency; this is not a situation I would like to be exposed to again when I have my family standing outside waiting, and certainly not the conditions that I would wish to spend what ended up being a 12-hour journey. Very disappointed. Given that I am due to return over Christmas, I would certainly seek to obtain a more comprehensive and transparent service, without being told that everything about my booking is incorrect and being appealed to for extra funds. "
" Upon attendance at the rental desk we were informed that the car we had rented did not benefit from winter tyres, and I was sure that this was a particular selling point at the time of booking. Additionally, I believed that I had booked the largest vehicle I could. The representative advised that I would've had to have booked a larger class of vehicle to obtain the winter tyres, which I could now do for circa 200 Euros as an 'upgrade' ; this vehicle was no larger than the one initially rented and so the offer was declined. Only upon rejection did the representative then state that I could have snow chains at an additional cost - Circa 100 euros. On this occasion I managed to find the winterization statement in the booking confirmation stating an additional cost of 12 euro per day up to a maximum of 60 euros. The representative stated that this was incorrect and that I should seek to obtain a refund of the difference from Autoeurope as "they always get this wrong" he later added that this charge could also be refunded once the car car is returned having not used the chains; upon return of the unused chains I was advised that this should not have been stated and that they should charge me for the chains even though I hadn't used them even though they remained sealed in their transport case. Through discussion, the representative agreed to do the refund on this occasion as a goodwill gesture; the evidence of the goodwill is yet to be confirmed by my credit card statement. As a separate item, the booking stated an additional Ski rack; no such ski rack was available and the ski had to remain inside the vehicle - to the discomfort of the already full to capacity vehicle. "

Upon returning home after renting a car for three days from Marseille, I received an invoice stating I had been charged 95 euros out of my 115 euros deposit for services that I had no prior knowledge of. I have emailed Avis/Budget multiple times over the last 4-5 weeks, since my rental, asking what these hidden services are which means money has been taken from my deposit for, to receive one response which solely sent me the invoice again and with no explanation, other than I have been charged an extra day, and still not explaining the extra charges that were not discussed at the time of rental. The time of pick-up that Avis/Budget have on record of 20:55 15/07/2023, which is the time of commencement of being acknowledged by Budget staff. They neglected to include the fact that I had to wait whilst Budget staff dealt with me, whilst also dealing with another customer (three staff members were apparently needed to deal with another customer), and then took at least 20 minutes to locate my vehicle's keys. The time of drop-off that Avis/Budget have on record of 21:51 18/07/2023 is the time I was finally acknowledged after waiting, yet again, to be served by the lack of staff they had in their Marseilles branch. These times DO NOT reflect the period which I had the vehicle - they reflect the times which I was either WAITING to have the vehicle or WAITING to return the vehicle. I strongly suggested that they review their security footage and the barrier times for the ACTUAL times I departed and returned - they will tell a very different story. They will show that I, in fact, only had the vehicle for exactly three days. Avis/Budget's lack of staff and the time it takes to be served is in NO WAY an excuse to be able to charge me an extra day of renting the car! In addition to this, they have still not explained the OTHER extras they added on. I have had to raise a case with my credit card company and I am now dealing with the stolen money that way. Highly recommended that you do not touch, not just the Avis/Budget Marseilles branch – but the whole company in general, with a barge pole. Budget added a host of additional charges and insurance costs without flagging so the rental cost around 1/3 more than paid to auto Europe. And the agreements provided were in French so I was unable to properly review the contract before signing. " See above. + The hand back at Marseille was quick but mainly because the on site staff refused to examine the car for damage even though I requested an inspection. Surely this must lead to disputed damage claims at a later date. "
" I can not differentiate between Budget and Auto Europe only to say I booked through A/E and used Budget. A/E quoted me a price for an additional driver of 11E per day incl Vat with a max of 132 E. On arrival Budget tried to charge over 150E. Upon refusal I had to compromise on 131.96E or not have the car. The manager kept telling me it was the money. I assume she meant the euro/£ exchange rate which was irrelevant as we were dealing in Euros. Prior to my arrival Budget had written to me to say the additional driver cost would be the equivalent of 88.99 in euros which was about £100 with no mention of VAT so I assumed it was included. Upon returning the car I was charged 119.02E plus VAT = 142.94E How can I use A/E or Budget when a quoted additional charge is made up as the local office sees fit. Based on 11 days I should have been charge 121E inc Vat - Not over 150E or the final charge of 142.94E. Not only is the discrepancy upsetting but it took over an hour of arguing at the budget desk to get an agreement of 131.96E which they ignored anyway. I have the supporting paperwork if you care sufficiently to investigate. In the mean time I must book elsewhere. "

" At Airport pick up I had Quick Pass so I went to Quick Pass check in. For normal checkin there were 5 people serving. For Quick Pass there was 2 then one serving. I tried to complain and woman said if you don't like it go in other line! She was very rude. I waited about 90 minutes to be served. Several people in front of me did not even have a booking. Was a complete shambles. When I picked up car it was not in a good state with big dent in door and a few scratches on bodywork and wheels. We videoed and took photos but I emailed about 5 times and phoned several times because I was worried they would think I damaged car. However nobody replied or picked up phone. It was not until I dropped off car that I was told Avis were aware. Was a nice car to drive but I should not have been given a damaged car. People kept commenting about the damage! Drop off was excellent but does not compensate for stress of the whole experience. "

" Why can't the price be straightforward from the start, to help the customer? I love the marketing with the underlying message that auto-europe are experts in rentals. However all these experts can't find a solution where the customer pays the agreed price when buying the voucher and that's it. Let me confirm that these are non-damage related fees. Also, the fact that I have to enter my details (address, age) 3 times is non optimised. Auto-europe and car rentals really need to work together and simplify further the process for the customer. "

Even if the extra charges are small, less than 10 euros in this case, it is always frustrating - these are non-damage related charges. Also, I inputted my details before for a "fast-track" check-in. Needless to say, they couldn't find my details and I had to give all the information again at the counter. My one complaint though is that I had to go through the same questions and options several times online - the last being the quick check-in service online. Once at the car hire desk in BOD they asked the same details and offers of extras again! This is not the speedy check in I had anticipated. Went to the local staff who turned up with a much bigger vehicle which we didn't want. We eventually agreed to take this car and when we woke up in the morning at our location one of the tires was flat. We had to take it back and change it. Absolutely dreadful experience. "

" We picked up the rental car at Nice airport on the 9th June at the agreed time of 5pm. The person (male) on the desk was very helpful and explained everything including how to contact Budget in case of an emergency, where to pick the car up from and where to bring the car back to at the end of the rental. He didn't try to give me the hard sell on any additional items including car excess insurance (which I already purchased). This was a very refreshing experience when compared to previous experience with other rental companies e.g. Gold Car at Palma airport, Mallorca. The car was is very good condition and was filled up ready for us to use. The rental went perfectly but Budget fell down on 2 things and that's why I scored it a 4. Firstly after a few days the car notified me that the car key battery was low and required changing. secondly I tried to contact Budget on the number recommended at the airport desk about 4 or 5 times but it just rang out and no one replied. Thirdly I contacted Budget via Facebook messenger and Twitter about needing help with the car key but didn't get a reply for nearly a week, in fact the reply came the day before we were due to return the car. So all in all the car rental was superb but Budget failed on essentially customer service i.e. the contact number ringing out and no response from either my messenger or Twitter messages requesting help. If they had replied to my requests for help then the 4 would have been a 9 or 10 ! "

I moved forward twice and the second assistant waved me back both times pretending he was working. After about 10 mins about 10 further passengers arrived and he called 'Anyone on the Avis priority scheme?' One couple said yes and he waved them forward immediately and deliberately leaving me waiting over a further more than 10 minutes. When I eventually got to the other assistant it took only 5 minutes to get me going as I was pre-registered. It was the rudest I have ever been treated at a car hire counter. " At pickup, I reported that the fuel gauge was only reading three-quarters full. Was told there was an isue with the gauge itself. I was offered a new car (too much hassle, we were already loaded up) or just fill to as far as it would go on return. We filled twice, and both times the gauge went to full, no problem. We returned the car displaying full. No compensation was offered. Had we returned it only displaying three-quarters as we had collected it, apparently we would have been charged for the additional fuel to top up. The system does not allow desk staff to do anything else. "

" I returned the car on the due date and at the due time to Nice airport (10.04) 30th Sept 19. I was told I did not need a receipt because I had taken out full insurance. At 16.00 I received a phone call asking where the car was as it had not been logged in as returned ! I advised them when it was returned and described the operative that refused to give me a receipt. To date and after 6 odd phone calls to indifferent, rude and unhelpful they still have not told me that they have resolved the situation. The stress is unbelievable and their attitude is appalling "

" The vehicle itself was very comfortable and the collection/drop off procedure was seamless. My only complaint was about the windscreen damage noted above. I would have noticed something hitting the windscreen whilst driving the car, but nothing did in the week in which I hired it. Very suspicious that such a small mark could be picked up immediately on a insect strewn windscreen. I am 99% certain the technician concerned had tried that ploy with previous drivers. "
" Everything went perfectly until the vehicle check when I returned it at Lyon Airport. The technician that viewed the vehicle ignored all the scratches and marks that were noted when I picked the vehicle up, instead went directly to the windscreen and pointed out a 'chip' in it. The chip was barely visible (it was the size of a ballpoint pen nib), yet he pointed it out immediately. How he could have seen it with the number of dead/squashed insects on the windscreen is beyond me. In fact it seemed more than suspicious that this incredibly small mark could be viewed from the distance that he maintains he originally saw it from. Thankfully I paid for additional insurance, otherwise I would have been made to pay for this 'chip' that must have been on the windscreen before I picked it up. I fear for the hirer of the vehicle after me as they would have had to pay for it if they were not covered. Shame on you! "

" I phoned autoeurope to explain I was going to be late to collect the car due to missing my flight but would collect the car around 1700 French time. Your agent said this shouldn't be a problem as it would just be a case of holding the vehicle until I arrived but would transfer me through to Budget in Toulouse. I waited on the phone for 1hr with no response!!! Having phoned Autoeurope again and getting a different agent who used a different number I finally got to speak to a budget agent who said that because I was arriving late my booking would be cancelled and basically there was nothing they could do!! I then phoned Autoeurope again and got the first agent I spoke to who couldn't understand why Budget wouldn't hold the vehicle. She very kindly and professionally arranged another vehicle for me at the additional cost of £375.80 and said I should receive £175 back as a refund as Budget would take £110 of my original booking cost of £234.07 (obviously £234.07 - £110.00 = £120.07). "

I did not get the GPS but I obviously needed the child seat. So a complete lack of transparency. When we returned the car, the checking of the condition of the car was minimal apart from zoning into the tyre which dubiously had a nail in the front left tyre. Not five minutes before it had been fine. The Avis employee stated straight away that we hadn't taken out insurance so we will be charged whatever Avis quote it to be which was 316 euros. The counter staff were extraordinarily inefficient and incredibly slow and they basically didn't have enough cars for the people turning up. Even when we were eventually seen by the staff they tried to get me to take a more expensive option simply (clearly because they didn't have the one I booked) expecting me to pay 40 euros extra a day for the privilege of solving there problem! " The only part of the experience that you need to be aware of was on collection. Whilst collecting the car at around 2300Hrs it was clear that i was the last one of the day and that they wanted to go home..i can appreciate that. However future customers should be aware of the fact that befor eyou accept the keys from them that you do a visual handover with the car to ensure that you do not have the issues that i had... 1. My car was not full with fuel...but i had to return it full. Sadly i did not notice this until i was several miles down the road ! 2. The Sat-Nav was not set up for me to use in english, This is clearly not good at such a late hour trying to work that out and then finding the staff had gone home the moment i had walked away with the keys when i returned to ask them. The member of staff made many phonecalls and explained there was a shortage of large cars - I'd ordered a Jeep Compass (or equiv) as we are a family of 4 with quite alot of luggage and we wanted to be comfortable. Eventually I was offered a Fiat 500X - which I reluctantly took (FYI the Jeep has luggage apces of 438 litres, the Fiat 500x 350 litres). Consequently we had to pack luggage in around my children in the back seat in order to fit everything in. No refund was offered or given. I have complained to Auto Europe. Also major building work / roadworks are in progress at Bordeaux airport and as a result the trafiic congestion is very bad and the signposting for rental returns is misleading and unclear. It took me over an hour to figure out how to get to the correct entrance for rental returns. "

" As you will see from the above our experience with Budget has been totally unacceptable and expensive. They do not appear to check vehicles prior to pick up and leave the onnus on the renter to identify damage. On the first vehicle there were three areas of damage to the vehicle which were not recorded by Budget. Our whole experience with Budget, and indeed with yourselves, has been totall unacceptable. We are still waiting for a response from your team for the earlier rental when it was alleged that we returned the vehicle late. We have today sent a letter to the Managing Director of Avis Budget sharing our dissatisfaction. We rent vehicles on a regular basis but would not touch Budget ever again or book through Aut Europe As we have taken the time to share our experience with you we expect a satisfactory resolution to our dispute. It's a pretty commoditised business with not much to choose between the admin of the rental companies and the cars they supply. That's why I use you, to find me the best deal on offer at the time. Answer me this please: why do all car rental desks take an incredible ammount of time faffing around at their computers when you check in? Why can't I leave all my relevant data with you e.g driver's license, you send it straight to the rental firm and they have the documentation ready for me when I arrive? Alternatively, you supply them with the bulk of the data in advance, they send me an online form or link where I complete the rest, and again, I just pick up the car and go when I get there. This waiting around is particularly inefficient and annoying in the summer months. "

" Upon arrival at the Budget desk at Geneva airport i was informed that they do not have any Nissan X-Trail at all at that station. Therefore, it was impossible to provide me with such a car in any circumstances. The only option available for the same price was a C4 Picasso which provided 5 adult seats and (apparently) 2 infant seats using the boot space. It certainly was not a seating for 7 adults as booked, nor would it provide for the suitcase and two small bags as per the voucher confirmation. After much discussion i agreed to upgrade to a 5 seater Alpha Aslvio at an additional cost of 167.18 Euros. There was also a location surcharge of 41.50 Euros and a vehicle licence fee of 28.03 Euros which i believe should not have been charged as these were both included in the original quotation. In summary it meant that two of our party had to organise an alternative lift to our resort and in resort we had to do 2 journeys to and from the ski-lifts and going out for dinner which was highly inconvenient as we had planned to use the 7 adult seater as booked, soiling some of our plans. We dropped the car off after searching for about 40 minutes for a petrol station (only finding one that served lorries only). Your staff explained that there is no petrol station at CdG unless you arrive from Paris direction. My colleague left an iPad in the car only to find the next day when he returned that although the car had not been cleaned the iPad had been removed. It has not been returned to him. The details are below: 1. there was no clear location of the car company. It only says in in terminal on the paper. However, there are two terminals. " Vehicle collection at Budget Nice Airport was very poor. There was a 45 minute queue and when I visited their Presitge desk, there were 3 members of staff doing nothing. The lady there advised that it was not possible to process my booking, even though I offered to pay extra. I I obviously made my feelings known and the situation was further compounded when she waved her arms abruptly at me to go back down to the 45 minute queue. I arrived at the desk after the 45 minute wait, only to be advised by 'Audrey' that I was in the wrong queue and would need to queue again. I suspected that this was a deliberate attempt to anger me further and refused to leave the desk, advising her that I had already queued for 45 minutes. Her response was that 45 minutes was in fact very good and that it can take 2 hours. Audrey eventually processed my booking but not before advising that my vehicle was not available and that an alternative vehicle would be found. No surprise that I ended up with the worst hire car that I have ever laid my eyes on, both bumpers damaged, front licence plate bent and panels badly scratched. The damage to the boot hatch was significant and unsightly. My journey was further delayed by the fact that not all of the damage of the 44,000 km Opel Astra has been recorded, so I had to have this added to inventory. Not a great experience and not a great start to my holiday. "

My car was a nightmare, after driving away from the airport which was gone 10.30pm I noticed that when I went faster than 50km per hour, the back of the car seemed to shake and made a terrible noise. As I was following my wife we had to keep going as it was late at night and with 5 children we needed to get to our destination. My wifes car everytime it went uphill lost a tremendous amount of power, to the extent of stalling which was annoying to say the least. She tried the day after picking the car up to ring Marseille and rang in excess of 11 times. She could not get through so rang an international helpline in the end who told her that I should take my car back to Hyreres airport which was the nearest car rental place. We spent time driving there and swapping my car over. I must mention that Alexander that looked after us there was very good and praise should be given in the professional way he dealt with us. My wife didn't want to make a fuss about her car as it would have looked odd both of us complaining. When we returned both cars to Marseille, not knowing the area and me not having much petrol left to the point we limped home, we decided to get petrol in the airport as if we broke down we were almost there. Unfortunately the airport had no petrol whatsoever. When we went to the Budget desk to explain that we were happy to pay the fuel cost because there was none, they wanted to charge us €120 each for fuel, and my wifes car had a quarter of a tank left anyway. This was daylight robbery and my wife went mad at your staff who I have to say Anne-Fleur dealt with the situation brilliantly and after hearing what a nightmare we had had, reduced the amounts down to €60 or so each. She was very professional and understood our frustration. What also confused me is that my car had a deposit of over €200 euros wheresas my wifes did not, hers was €120 odd yet both were booked through yourselves at the same time and the same type of car. Even Ann-Felur couldn't work out why this had been done. So overall no I was not satisfied with the cars at all, with five children spread over two cars, I need to keep my family safe, which sadly I don't feel Budget feel so strongly about as you wouldn't put out sub standard cars. However I was satisfied with the Alexander and Anne-Fleur as they helped then best they could. "

" I will NEVER book through Auto-Europe again. While I thought it was good value when I booked, we were booked through a firm that must routinely scam their customers by adding extra insurance (that we had already paid for) to the rental agreement without asking and distracting you with upgrades and fuel options while you sign. Just to find out a week later that you have just paid double the original rental. Auto-Europe then wash their hands of it. This must be a recurring theme since when I made the original complaint to Auto-Europe I was told "we'll look at the rental agreement" a precursor to "well theres nothing we can do about it". Yes there is! Dont use a company whose standard policy is to add additional unneeded unwanted insurance into your contract (which you sign on a tiny screen). Or in the pages of instructions make Point No 1 - DECLINE ALL INSURANCE AND MAKE SURE YOU CHECK BECAUSE THESE GUYS ARE AT IT. "

When collecting the car the counter agent spent some time asking if I would like to upgrade and pay for fuel but NONE explaining the EXTRA local insurance he or Budget added without my consent - but marked on the sheet as "my request". I was unable to contact Budget and therefore had to drive the 90 minutes back from our accommodation to the airport to report the fault and exchange the vehicle, this meant half of my first day's holiday was taken up on an unexpected journey driving to & from the airport to sort the car. However there was absolutely no difficulty once there, Budget were very apologetic and exchanged the vehicle without question. In the end we just took the cars to Avignon budget where the staff were incredibly helpful and charged us 80 euros per car. If you've booked in advance, then there should be a car ready and waiting for you. " The car was fine and we had no trouble. Regrettably I managed to scrape a wheel arch (I have a picture of the damage). What I did not see until it was returned was a scrape along the back of driver's wing mirror, which did not in any way affect it's operation. Apart from those marks nothing else was recorded by the person who accepted the car back. ON MY RETURN TO THE UK I SEE THAT MY CREDIT CARD HAS BEEN USED BY AVIS TO CHARGE ME £660 !!!! NO EXPLANATION? " I don'w know what I signed up for with Auto Europe, but this was not a good experience. I have used them in the past, usually without problems. But this could make me go back to the main rival. "
" What a shambles Budget were. Ordered a compact automatic - offered a Fiat 500! - were they joking. Forced into an expensive upgrade. In Toulouse you then go to a separate counter to pick up the car - and that is all they supposedly do - the place was busy because they were booking people into without reservations. They were busy and we had to search for staff to show us the car. It was clean inside - but filthy outside. Difficult to find the scratches. Couldn't tell if the alloy wheels were scratched, so dirty. Had to argue to get them to take notice. Then find the car had a 1/4 tank of fuel. More problems getting that checked. "

" The car was great but I have been overcharged on petrol. I was charged a petrol deposit of £83. On the way back there was a lot of traffic so I was unable to top up before drop off. I used a quarter of the tank. Amazingly, when I got back I was charged £53!! For a quarter of a tank. My friends did the same journey with me at a different car rental place and were only charged £20. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of the fuel gauge so there I cannot contest the charge. I suspect they do this trick to a lot of people as most people (like me) won't take the photo. "

" Everything went well, car as expected (Renault Grand Scenic). Came with Sat Nav as well! One small hiccup however, the snow chains ordered were not new and clips were bent so could not be used. Budget/Avis were helpful and said that they will not charge for them, but it meant that I could not use the car for two days due to heavy snow on the roads. Otherwise, everything was a good experience. "
