Car Hire at Almeria Train Station - Gateway to Southern Spain

Located on Station Square (Plaza de la Estación) just a short walk from the city centre, Almeria Train Station is what is known as an 'intermodal' station (ie fully integrated transport hub) that was first opened in 1894 but rebuilt with a brand-new concourse and a host of related facilities in 2005. With its fine façade of monumental stained glass, stone and brick, the original building still stands as a fine example of the beautiful iron architecture characteristic of the Spanish industrial-style architecture of the 19th century.

Thanks to its excellent and very well established railway links, the enchanting city of Almería is easily reached by train. There's a fast Intercity connection direct from Madrid as well as regular high-speed services from Granada located some 160 kiloemtres north-west of Almeria. Plans are also in the pipeline for a direct rail link from Murcia which is due to be completed by 2027 as part of the country's ambitious Mediterranean Corridor train line.

The city of Almeria is one of the largest seaside resorts on the coast of eastern Andalucia. With its dry, sunny climate, it is a popular tourist destination with many interesting places to visit, such as the striking Moorish fortress called the Alcazaba which was built in the 10th century. Many of the city's top attractions are situated close to Almeria Train Station, notably Almeria Art Museum (Museo de Arte de Almería) and the Almeria Archaeological Museum (Museo de Arqueólogico de Almeria).

With a car hire from Almeria Train Station you'll be able to make the most of your time in this lovely Spanish city before exploring both the coastal areas and landscapes of the picturesque Andalusia region close by. A major local attraction is the Cabo de Gata and Níjar Natural Park which covers an area of 460 square-kilometres and was classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1997. With your own transport you'll also be able to visit the famous Alhambra Palace in Granada, another of the most impressive cities in southern Spain.

    Station Information

Almeria Train Station is a traditional Spanish multi-purpose transport facility (intermodal), which means that it was built for different types of public transport which are all housed under the same roof. Railway enthusiasts visiting the city can see the old train station that originally opened in 1863 alongside its modern replacement, which was designed by the French engineer Laurent Farge. This exquisite iron, glass and stone neo-Mudejar-style building operated for 140 years and today is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful train stations in southern Europe. Inaugurated in 2005, the building of the new Almeria Train Station marked the arrival of high-speed trains from destinations all over Spain, including the capital, Madrid.

    Parking tips

Visitors who rent a car at Almeria Train Station often find themselves searching for somewhere to park in order to see the main tourist attractions during their stay. The first thing to take into account is the fact that the city is divided into zones, with the Blue Zone mostly covering the central and main shopping areas where drivers paid a minimum hourly fee to park.
