Car hire at Bergamo Airport - Exploring Northern Italy

The fortified hilltop town of Bergamo is a fast-growing destination for visitors to the Milan region of northern Italy. Reminiscent of a medieval film set, the city is essentially a two-tiered open-air museum with several impressive art museums and a great diversity of architecture to offer.

Nestling idyllically in the foothills of the Orobie Alps, the region surrounding Bergamo is a land of densely-wooded mountains and charming pastel-shaded villages, making it as popular with hikers and photographers as it is with road trippers. But most of all, it suits people looking to slow down, step back in time and immerse themselves in the lovely landscapes of northern Italy.

Located a leisurely 30- to 45-minute drive north-east of Milan, Bergamo is an oasis of tranquillity with many delightful Baroque and Renaissance-era buildings to explore amidst centuries-old townhouses embroidered with impressive wrought-iron and grand-arched columns. Book your car today with Auto Europe and enjoy some some well-deserved rest, relaxation, culture and gastronomy in one of Italy’s most picturesque tourist regions.

Overlooking the Città Alta (Upper Town), and very much the heart and soul of the city centre, the city’s striking centrepiece is its 12th-century bell-tower which pierces the sky at a height of over 170 feet. Also known as the Torre Civica (Civic Tower), it rewards visitors climbing to the top with some of the most spectacular views in the whole of northern Italy.

After picking up their car hire at Bergamo Airport, most tourists start their city sightseeing in Piazza Vecchia, the perfectly-preserved medieval square conveniently located in the middle of Bergamo's old quarter. The historical richness of this area is mostly credited to the Venetians who built the walls (still standing today) and ruled the city for more than 400 years.

The square’s star attraction is the Romanesque Palazzo della Ragione, one of Europe’s oldest surviving town hall buildings. Dating from the 12th century, it houses the precious Accademia Carrara art collection which feature many rare pieces of art and several masterpieces by Botticelli, Raphael and Bellini.

A fusion of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, the nearby Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica is also well worth seeing for its stunningly ornate interior with some precious tapestries adorning the building's ancient walls.

Surrounding Bergamo and its modern airport, the lovely Lombardy region of northern Italy has many wonderful places to visit, all of which are easy to reach by car. Chief among them is the magnificent city of Milan just 30 miles to the south-west, a thriving megametropolis particularly famous for its huge 14th-century cathedral and the fascinating Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology.

Other places of interest in close proximity to Bergamo include the delightful spa town of San Pellegrino, Le Cornelle Animal Park and Lakes Como, Iseo and Maggiore.

Visiting Bergamo, Milan and some of the other star attractions in the Lombardy region couldn't be easier. Just go to the Auto Europe website and book your car in a few quick and easy steps. For more information about driving in Italy, please consult our Italy driving guide for tips on paying tolls, finding petrol stations, age restrictions and driving distances, etc. Check out our Bergamo car hire reviews page to see what others think about their recent Auto Europe car rental experience in northern Italy.

Where to pick up my car hire at Bergamo Airport

Picking up your car rental at Bergamo Airport is simple and stress-free (even after a long flight) because most of the car hire companies present at the airport have their desks located inside the Arrivals Hall. If you book with a company operating outside the terminal, there is a free shuttle bus that will get you to where you need to be quickly and without any hassle. The desks of on-site car hire companies are located inside the arrivals hall. As you leave baggage reclaim you should head to the left to find the desks. Some off-site suppliers, such as Goldcar, have a shuttle service to their offices. Please check the name of the supplier as well as any instructions on how to find the company's desks in the Terms and Conditions before you finalise your booking online. This information is also printed on your voucher. The car park for rental cars is after the airport car parks A to E. A shuttle service, running about every 15-20 minutes, will take you to the car park. Alternatively, if you do not have too much luggage, you should be able to walk to the car park in about 10 minutes. Check the name of the rental supplier carefully on your voucher. You can find the name of the company under the "Pick-up information" and "Drop-off information" boxes. Auto Europe does not have any local offices or its own cars, as we are a broker, not a supplier. The supplier of your rental is the one whose desk you should go to. One such supplier is called Auto Europa/Sicily By Car. Though the name of this supplier is similar to the name of our company, Auto Europa and Auto Europe are not the same firm. Only go to the Auto Europa desk if they are noted as the rental company on your voucher.

Bergamo Airport has one main and very modern terminal building covering a total area of 36,000 square-metres with 35 check-in desks and 26 boarding gates. The airport's recently-extended departure area covers two levels and allows passengers to enter the departures and arrivals halls through separate doors. The arrivals facilities are located on the ground floor, along with the baggage reclaim area, car hire desks, currency exchange and tourist information office. Passengers departing from the airport must check in on the ground-floor and proceed to the gates on the first floor where the duty free shops, bars and restaurants, newsagents and children's playing area are now located. Bergamo Airport is constantly in the phase of catering for an increasing number of passengers with more check-in desks, baggage carousels and boarding gates due to be added in the future. The number of aircraft stands will also rise as the airport consolidates its status as one of the busiest air transportation hubs in Europe.

    Airport Facilities

The airport has two VIP lounges designed as welcoming areas for all travellers, including Economy ticket holders, as well as special 24-hour Fast Track services offering passengers the chance to avoid long queues for security checks. The airport also features the Sala Amica (a special assistance room for passengers with reduced mobility), a smoking area with an outdoor patio, over 5,000 car parking spaces and several shops selling a wide range of products such as drinks, electrical appliances, leather goods, sunglasses, watches, tobacco, perfume and gifts for friends and family members back home. Besides a good choice of cafés and bars selling snacks and drinks (including fruit juices and smoothies), Bergamo Airport's passenger facilities also comprise a pharmacy, first aid centre, banks, bureaux de change, a chapel, left luggage and lost property offices, tourist information centre and an extensive high-speed Wi-Fi feed.

How to get to and from Bergamo Airport

You'll find it's a relatively smooth experience when picking up or dropping off your rent a car at Bergamo Airport, which is located only a couple of miles away via the SP591 road, as well as just 30 miles away from Milan on the E64. A gateway to northern Italy, Bergamo Airport is easily accessible to those arriving on the A4 from Milan and exiting at Bergamo. Once you have gone through the toll you must take the first exit on the right on the SS671 intercity thoroughfare (direction Lovere), which by following the road signs will bring you directly to Milano Bergamo Airport. For those coming on the A4 from Brescia, the recommended exit is Seriate. After paying the toll, you must take the SS671 (direction Bergamo-Lecco) and follow the road signs for Milano Bergamo Airport. There are several public transportation links to and from downtown Milan, including many express coaches. There are further connections to and from Bergamo city centre, as well as other destinations as far and wide as Arezzo, Bologna, Brescia, Monza, Turin, Malpensa Airport, Milan Trade Exhibition Centre, Parma, Torino and Verona.

    Parking Tips

ViaMilano Parking is the name of the official car park company operating at Milan's three airports, including Bergamo. Offering a quick, convenient and very effective car parking solution for visitors to the area, ViaMilano's airport car parks are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with valet parking an option for people in a hurry to catch their flight. Parking your car hire at Bergamo Airport in Bergamo is relatively easy because the city itself is small and manageable with most of the main tourist sights accessible on foot. There's plenty of on-street parking available in and around both city centres (Città Alta and Città Bassa) although there's great demand for these amongst the locals, like in any other large town or city anywhere in the world. Our best advice is to leave your car in one of the paid municipal car parks recommended by the Bergamo Tourist Board, the list of which includes Piazza Libertà, Central Parking - via Paleocapa, Triangolo - via Palma il Vecchio, Predaparking - via Pitentino, Ecolparking - via Ghislandi, Via Borfuro, San Marco - Piazza Repubblica, Via Camozzi (presso Pam), Via Tiraboschi, (presso Oviesse/Billa), Via Casalino Via Baschenis, Via Pinamonte da Brembate, Via B. Palazzo (presso GS), Via Previtali and Parking express (via Spino, 12).
