Idyllically situated on the banks of the River Nervión, a short distance from the city's Old Town, Bilbao Train Station (also known as Abando Station) is a major railway hub that offers travellers regular regional, commuter and long-distance services throughout Spain, as well as the high-speed Alvia line. Passengers can travel direct to Bilbao from dozens of major Spanish cities like Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid, whilst connecting with Bilbao's metro, tram and bus services. It is also situated adjacent to Bilbao Concordia Train Station which conveniently serves countless local trains, such as the FEVE services to the nearby city of Santander.

The station is perfectly placed for visitors looking to pick up their car hire at Bilbao Train Station and see all the main sights with the minimum of effort. Bilbao's ancient historic centre surrounding the cathedral is a short drive away; just turn right on exiting the station and head down the street called Naffora Kelela which takes you over the bridge. Besides the cathedral, the lovely Casco Viejo (Old Town) is a major draw for tourists with a plethora of attractions, including the church of San Nicolás de Bari which features a Baroque façade and a uniquely-shaped octagonal interior.

But if there's one thing that's put Bilbao firmly on the map in recent years it's the amazing Guggenheim Museum, which is home to one of the Europe's most important art collections. With over 28,000 square-metres of exhibition space, it is bursting with contemporary and modern art masterpieces, with a number of timeless treausres like Joseph Beuy’s Lightning with Stag in its Glare and Jeff Koons’ colossal sculpture he named Puppy. The building itself is a spectacular work of art, a groundbreaking example of 20th-century architecture designed by famous architect Frank Gehry.

The largest city of the beautiful Basque province of northern Spain, Bilbao is the gateway to a magnificent region dotted with interesting sites and fascinating places to visit. The enchanting seaside city of San Sebastian is a short drive east along the coast on the AP-8 motorway, passing many of the area's best beaches en route. Driving a similar distance west brings you to Santander, another of northern Spain's top holiday destinations offering a wealth of tourist attractions with several fine sandy beaches close by.
