Car hire at Hannover Airport, Germany

This regal German city is swimming in history. As the home of the Hanover dynasty - monarchs who reigned over Hanover and Great Britain from the 1700s until Victoria’s reign ended in 1901 - the city was undoubtedly wholly majestic, however severe bombing by the Brits during the Second World War has left the city with an unorthodox aesthetic. Grand, palatial remnants of this royal legacy remain dotted around Hannover, with verdant parks generously inhabiting large areas within the city’s boundaries. One such park, Eilenriede, is the largest city-based forest in Europe and is over twice the size of New York’s Central Park. Sadly, the RAF destroyed much of Hannover’s original buildings with bombs and these desolated areas were hastily and often questionably rebuilt. This has left the city with a strange architectural brew of medieval, renaissance and often less attractive modern architecture.

Today, Hannover is a business-orientated city – as such, amenities and shopping areas are of a high, corporate standard, which makes it a pleasant place for a city break. Two of the world’s largest trade fairs, Cebit and Hanover Messe also take place in the city every year, bringing thousands of visitors to Hannover’s lively, ambient beer halls and beautiful churches. Hannover Messe has the largest fairground in the world, which hosted EXPO 2000 and much of the incredible infrastructure purpose-built for the event remains, such as a gigantic Bhutanese Bhuddist Temple and the biggest post-box in the world, which gives the district an ethereal, otherworldly feel.

Although EXPO 2000 itself was a financial disaster, it had a hugely positive impact upon Hannover’s transportation system and road network, which follows much of Germany’s public ownership model. Nationally, it is in a key location in Germany, with strong motorway links to Munich, Hamburg and Berlin, which makes car hire from Hannover Airport a very popular choice among travellers and tourists, as well as business-people.

During the day-time, Hannover boasts many attractions of cultural interest to visitors. The Herrenhausen is a stunning countryside home that belonged to the British Georges and is a mere 10-10 minute journey from the city. The Residenz Museum is another interesting attraction, housed inside Celle Castle, which shows Hanoverian artefacts and is around half an hour’s journey from the city. By night, the city has a modest nightlife – nothing to rival that of Berlin or Munich, but a wide variety of bars and clubs that cater to most budgets. Although the city centre tends to be quiet by night, the Old Town usually has more vibrancy. The Staatstheater provides all of your opera, ballet and theatrical needs, while those looking for a taste of something slightly more debauched should head to esteemed cabaret venue, the Georgspalast, which balances inventive choreography with impressive feats of physicality.

Transportation / How to get to the airport

    By Car
It should take between 20 and 45 minutes to reach Hannover Airport from the city centre by car. Take Vahrenwalder Street and then continue onto Flughafenstrasse at the large spaghetti junction. Around rush hour, traffic is to be expected, so leave plenty of time when returning your car hire to Hannover Airport during these times. Aral, Clean Car and Esso all have petrol stations just off Vahrenwalder Street, so please ensure that you return your vehicle with the agreed level of petrol, if stated within your policy.

    By Bus and Taxi
There are several methods of public transport that connect Hannover Airport to the city. The local 470 bus connects to Langenhagen Central Station, from which you can take the RB38 train to the city centre. However, the easiest method is simply to take the airport S5 S-Bahn train, which can be accessed in Terminal C and runs every 30 minutes. It takes around 15 minutes to reach the centre and costs around 4 euros one-way. There was once a shuttle bus, however it proved far less efficient than the S-Bahn.

Various taxi services operate at the airport and all cabs can be found just outside the entrance to every terminal building. Passengers can expect a single journey to the city to cost around 30€, which is another reason to book a car hire instead and travel at your whim, sometimes at prices lower than this for a whole week.
