Car hire at London City Airport - Gateway to the Capital

Located just 9.5km (6 miles) east of central London and all its attractions, London City Airport (LCY) is one of the easiest and most accessible airports in the capital. It is at its busiest during the winter months when a number of major international airlines (most notably British Airways and Swiss) increase their operations to Europe's top ski resorts. LCY has also increased services to a number of popular leisure destinations like Palma de Mallorca, Málaga and Chambéry in recent years to offer passengers a choice of more than two dozen locations for extended breaks and summer holidays.

The first aircraft landed at London City Airport on the 31st of May 1987 before the first commercial routes started operating there a few months later. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the airport in November 1987 and passenger numbers rose gradually in the following years to peak around the five million mark in the 2020s. LCY now ranks as the fifth-busiest airport by passengers and aircraft movements serving the London area (after Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton) and one of the busiest in the whole of the United Kingdom.

London needs no introduction; it has been the UK's most historically fascinating, culturally rich and gastronomically outstanding city since the dawn of tourism due to its iconic attractions, large green open spaces and a more eclectic range of shops than Paris and Milan put together. It's one of the world's great capital cities that's increasingly visited and enjoyed by travellers from all four corners of the world. Who can resist a selfie in front of Big Ben or the chance to see the amazing Crown Jewels at the Tower of London?

With a car hire at London City Airport you can have all the pleasure of visiting this great city before exploring some of England's other must-see attractions, such as Hampton Court Palace, Windsor Castle, Bath, Canterbury, Stratford-upon-Avon, Stonehenge and the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge. Another popular option after a few days' busy city sightseeing is to head for the English coast to visit some of the country's lovely seaside towns, including Hastings, Camber Sands and Littlehampton.

London City Airport has a single, two-storey passenger terminal building with a total of 18 gates. The ground-floor contains the check-in desks and some service facilities, as well as a staircase leading through to the security control on the upper level. In the air-side waiting area there are several more shops and this part of the airport is connected to piers on both sides where corridors on the upper floor lead to the departure gates on the ground-floor. As the airport has no jet bridges, walk-boarding is used on all stands. The Arrivals Hall is on the ground-floor of the main terminal building and after passengers leave the aircraft they pass through passport control, baggage reclaim and customs.

    Airport Facilities

The main part of London City Airport's terminal building has efficient information and taxi desks, a bureau de change and a left-luggage facility. The departure lounge has shops, bars and cafés, including Pret a Manager and Caffé Nero, while Truman’s Brick Lane Brews offers passengers an authentic East London experience. Other food and beverage highlights include Canning Town roasted coffee, as well as a range of delicious Bowery beigels and gourmet sausage rolls. The menu at The City Bar & Restaurant features hearty meals. For travellers in need of any last-minute purchases, they will find toiletries and magazines in Boots and WHSmith, respectively, and for special gifts there's the popular Watch Collection and Aelia Duty Free store which offers a handy Click & Collect service. Passengers can also treat themselves to a relaxing massage or makeover at the Aerospa health and beauty salon.

How to get to and from London City Airport

Many travellers who rent a car at London City Airport are pleasantly surprised to discover how easy it is to get in and out of the city at the beginning and end of their visit. The airport is served by two main roads, namely the A1020 and the A112, both of which provide quick access to Canning Town, the City of London and Stratford, as well as connecting with the North Circular Road (A406) and the A13 which offers easy access to London's orbital M25 motorway. LCY is also part of the extensive London Underground network (more commonly known as the Tube), as wellas the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) which connects to Canning Town, Stratford and Bank stations (services run every eight to 15 minutes). Numerous bus routes serve London City Airport, including the number 473 (which stops at Stratford, Silvertown, North Woolwich and Prince Regent DLR station) and the number 474 for Canning Town, North Woolwich and East Beckton via Silvertown. In addition to there being plenty of taxis available at the airport (our advice is to only use a licensed black cabs or a reputable minicab company and to never use unauthorised drivers), passengers arriving at LCY can also use regular riverboat services to and from central London on the River Thames, passing many of the city's most iconic sights en route.

    Parking Tips

Finding a place to park after collecting your car rental at London City Airport might see challenging at first, but London's traffic system is very well organised with a number of different parking options available to locals and visitors alike. The first thing to be aware of is the fact that parking is not allowed anywhere where there are red or yellow lines on the curb, however a single white line indicates that parking is permitted with some restrictions (ie only at certain times on specific days). Restrictions are particularly common during the working week and it's important to be aware that in some areas parking may be limited to residents (make sure you always check the information available on local street signs). In most places where street parking is allowed, drivers must pay for parking most often through a the city-wide pay and display system, with drivers buying a ticket from nearby machines and displaying it above the dashboard so that it is clearly visible to passing traffic wardens. London's many multi-storey car parks provide a convenient alternative to street parking and can be found all over the inner city and its suburbs. In Central London alone, there are 20 safe and secure car parks operated by Q-Park in key locations such as Chinatown, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, Leicester Square, Soho, Pimlico, Tower Bridge, Harley Street and Oxford Street. There's plenty of parking available at London City Airport itself, with farthest car park from the terminal just a seven-minute walk. The main airport car park is conveniently located a few minutes from the terminal entrance, offering passengers flexibility and peace of mind before their flight.
