Car hire at New York JFK Airport - The Best of the Big Apple

An icon of 20th-century architecture when it first opened in 1948, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport quickly grew into one of the world's largest and busiest air transportation facilities. Located in the borough of Queens, just 16 miles south-east of Midtown Manhattan, it currently has 128 aircraft gates, four runways and six passenger terminals built with enough capacity to cater for the 60 million-plus passengers the airport receives every year.

Operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (which also manages the three other major airports in the New York metropolitan area - namely Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Teterboro Airport), JFK is an important international gateway for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, two of the USA's largest airlines. More than ninety airlines operate from the airport, with direct flights to hundreds of destinations in all six inhabited continents.

One of the world's greatest cities, New York is just as much fun to visit in winter as it is in summer. Manhattan alone has enough first-class attractions to keep both adults and children amused for weeks, most notably the Empire State Building, Central Park, MoMA, Guggenheim and the Met. Each of New York's five glamorous boroughs - Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx - has its own unique tourist features and urban characteristics, making the city the perfect all-round destination at any time of the year.

With a car hire at New York JFK Airport you can enjoy the best of the Big Apple for a few days before taking to the roads and highways to explore the rest of New York state or travel further afield to Philadelphia or Washington DC. With Auto Europe you can rent a small, manoeuvrable car for extensive city sightseeing or a more robust SUV for an amazing trip along the coast roads of New England.

    Airport Information

Originally built as a supplement to LaGuardia Airport, but quickly surpassing it in capacity, JFK is now one of the busiest airports in North America with over 60 million passengers passing through it each year. When it first opened in 1948, it was known as New York International Airport, Anderson Field, or more simply Idlewild (to mark the resort and later golf course that was demolished to make way for the runways and terminals). The airport was renamed in honour of President Kennedy in December of 1963 about a month after he was assassinated.

John F. Kennedy International Airport has a CTA (Central Terminal Area) currently surrounded by six operational passenger terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 4, Terminal 5, Terminal 7 and Terminal 8. All six terminal buildings are arranged in a semi-circle and connected by the Airtrain and the Airline Terminals Train, both of which serve the non-secured areas of each terminal every ten minutes or so. Terminal 1 opened in 1998 with 11 gates, Terminal 2 is exclusively used by Delta Air Lines, Terminal 4 opened in 2013 with a large shopping centre and is the one that handles the most international arrivals, Terminal 5 is the main hub for JetBlue and is home to the Trans World Flight Center, Terminal 7 is mostly used by British Airways and Terminal 8 is the largest terminal at the airport with two concourses equipped with 12 and 17 gates, respectively. A major refurbishment and expansion soon to get underway includes new terminals and more facilities at New York JFK Airport.

How to get to and from New York JFK Airport

Visitors choosing to rent a car at New York JFK Airport normally find that travelling to and from the city is quite straightforward outside the morning and evening rush-hours. From NYC's financial district, the best route to the airport is via the Williamsburg Bridge, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the Long Island Expressway and the Van Wyck Expressway, while from Midtown Manhattan it's best to take the Queens Midtown Tunnel onto the Queens Midtown Expressway which continues on to the Long Island Expressway from which you can turn off onto the Van Wyck Expressway towards JFK. To travel between the city and JFK by public transport, the popular MTA NYC Bus service is the cheapest but slowest way of getting to and from Manhattan. A speedier and more direct route is provided by the JFK AirTrain which runs to Howard Beach Station and connects with the 'A' train to Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Jamaica Station is close to the airport and connects with the 'E' Train to Queens and Lower Manhattan and the 'J' and 'Z' trains to Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan and the Long Island Railroad to Penn Station, Brooklyn and Long Island. Additionally, the New York City Airporter Bus provides services to and from Grand Central Terminal and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Inside the airport perimeter, the 24/7 AirTrain JFK service is an elevated railway that stops at all the airport terminals, parking areas and car rental lots. It also connects with the Long Island Rail Road and New York City Subway in Queens.

    Parking Tips

On-street parking spaces are limited in most parts of downtown New York such as Manhatten, so the best option is to seek out the city's most centrally-located car parks offer which offer lower hourly rates at certain times of the day, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays. Some of the most tourist-friendly options include the Battery Parking Garage in Lower Manhattan, Manhattan Plaza Parking in Midtown Manhattan and large car park located right underneath the popular Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), which is in the heart of the city. For on-street street parking, it's important to pay close attention to any road signs relating to the specific area where you are parking in case restrictions apply, and you should always keep some coins with you in case your credit card isn't accepted for whatever reason. For visitors to the Statue of Liberty, our best parking tip is to park near the boat terminal and take the ferry to save time and money. It's always a good idea to hire a GPS navigational device to help find your way around a city as large and busy as the Big Apple.

John F. Kennedy International Airport provides several parking options, each of which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Prices range from low-cost and well discounted long-term parking options to more expensive short-term car parks in very close proximity to the terminal buildings. Daily parking rates depend on which parking option you choose, with blue and yellow colour codes for short-term covered parking garages adjacent to Terminals 1-8, Green, Orange and Red for short-term parking right next to Terminals 1-8 and FK Economy Lot (Long Term Parking Lot 9) offering the best parking options for extended stays about 4 miles from the terminals. Parking spaces for customers with restricted mobility are available in each parking lot near the terminal entrance. Please note that at no time will you be allowed to park your car hire at New York JFK Airport in front of or next to any of the terminals, not even for a moment. Terminal frontages are for passenger pick-ups/drop-offs only and all unattended vehicles are immediately towed away at the renter's expense.
