Car hire at New York LaGuardia Airport - Discovering the Big Apple

Located in East Elmhurst in the borough of Queens, New York's LaGuardia Airport is the third-busiest airport serving the Big Apple after JFK and Newark. First opened in 1935, it covers an area of more than 650 acres and caters for over 25 million passengers each year. The land LaGuardia Airport was built upon was originally used for the Gala Amusement Park which was torn down in 1929 and converted into an airfield. It was officially called LaGuardia Airport after the local authorities agreed to the name in June 1947, just three months before the Mayor of New York City, Fiorello La Guardia, passed away from pancreatic cancer.

Today LaGuardia is a major airport with four terminals - A, B, C, and D - with Terminal B being the largest. Flights take off and depart daily to a wide selection of mostly domestic locations operated by over a dozen different airlines, including Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Air ines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and WestJet. Ongoing expansion and reconstruction work currently in progress comprises improved terminals, more facilities and an increased number of aircraft parking bays and passenger gates.

New York LaGuardia Airport has four terminals (A, B, C and D) with 86 gates, all connected by buses and walkways. As with New York's JFK Airport, some terminals at LaGuardia are managed and maintained by the New York Port Authority and others by the airlines themselves. Known as the Marine Air Terminal, Terminal A was originally built for overseas flights and Pan Am’s flying boats with most of today's flights operated by Jet Blue. Opened in 1964, Terminal B (or the Central Terminal Building) caters predominantly for a small group of large airlines, notably Southwest, American Airlines, United and Air Canada. Terminal C (which was inaugurated in 1992) is home to Delta, WestJet, Spirit Airlines and Frontier, while Terminal D also caters for Delta and Delta Connection.

    Airport Facilities

Passengers at NYC's LaGuardia Airport have a wide range of food court options available and a few decent sit-down restaurants in all four terminals. Likewise, there's a good selection of shops, including convenience stores, Duty-free areas and plenty of shops selling make-up and other cosmetics, sunglasses, souvenirs and electronic gadgets, etc. There's also a spa offering manicures, pedicures, full facials and relaxing massages. Furthermore, LaGuardia provides free unlimited Wi-fi throughout the entire airport, along with several power outlets and charging stations so passengers can stay charged at no cost.
