Car hire at Newark Airport - The Best of the Big Apple

Catering for around 50 million passenger movements each year, Newark Liberty International Airport is situated in a very convenient location just to the west of New York City, between Newark and Elizabeth in the state of New Jersey. It is one of three major airports that exist in the heart of the New York metropolitan area, along with John F. Kennedy International Airport (more commonly known simply as JFK) and LaGuardia Airport, both situated in the vibrant and these days very trendy suburb of Queens.

Opened in 1928, Newark Airport has three large terminals - A, B, and C - which are cleverly arranged in a semicircle around a central roadway to facilitate quick and easy access for travellers in a hurry. Terminal C is the home of United Airlines' major East Coast hub, while most international airlines currently use Terminal B. Terminal A remains the main hub for domestic USA flights but this will change once the new Terminal A (currently under construction) is open and fully operational.

New York City (aka The Big Apple) needs no introduction; it is one of the world's most appealing and dynamic tourist destinations. This is the city that never sleeps and there are dozens of first-rate attractions to see and visit, most notably the iconic Statue of Liberty (don't forget your camera!) and the famous Met, one of the world's top museums. Another must is the Rockefeller Center, a vast entertainment and shopping complex in the heart of Manhattan.

With a car hire from Newark Airport you'll have the whole of New York state, New England and the rest of America's charming north-east coast at your disposal, as well as some of the USA's other prominent cities, such as Philadelphia and Washington DC, the country's proud capital. To further enjoy your New York motoring experience, why not take advantage of our Free Additional Driver offers to share the driving, plus you can pick your vehicle up in one place and drop it off somewhere else with one of our one-way car hire deals.

Newark Airport has three main passenger terminals - Terminal A, Terminal B and Terminal C. Managed by EWR Terminal One LLC (part of Flughafen München GmbH), Terminal A was completed in 1973 and has four levels. At the moment (while construction of the new terminal takes place), Terminal A is currently handles only domestic and Canadian flights but the new facility is expected to receive international flights once it is fully operational. Like Terminal A, Terminal B was also completed in 1973 and has four levels and handles mostly foreign carriers, as well as JetBlue's international flights along with some selected routes of other carriers, such as Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Sun Country, Elite Airways, Allegiant Air, and Spirit Airlines flights, plus some of United's international arrivals. Designed by Grad Associates and completed in 1988, Terminal C is exclusively operated by and for United Airlines and its regional carrier United Express.

    Airport Facilities

As one of the world’s busiest airports, passengers can expect to find a full complement of on-site facilities and amenities in all three of Newark Airport's terminals, including a wide assortment of shopping, dining and leisure opportunities for those with enough time on their hands. Besides numerous restaurants, fast food outlets and food stores for all tastes, the airport has several lounges available for passengers prepared to pay a few extra dollars, the majority of which are located in Terminal B. There's free Wi-Fi on the airport's '_Free EWR WiFi' network, a large lost and found section, hotels, fitness facilities, a multi-faith chapel (before security in Terminal C), a smoking area, luggage-storage facilities, mobile device charging stations, a medical centre, bureaux de change and a water bottle refilling station.

How to get to and from Newark Airport

When you rent a car at Newark Airport, New York's excellent road network means that you'll have no trouble getting to where you want to go, with a choice of highways available between the airport and Downtown. Take the Interstate 78 if you're heading to Manhattan, while in the opposite direction alight at Exit 57 which is the dedicated turn-off for the airport's entrance. The airport is served directly by U.S. Route 1/9, which provides connections to Route 81 and Interstate 78, both of which have interchanges with the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95) at exits 13A and 14, respectively. The interchange where U.S. Route 1/9, U.S. Route 22, New Jersey Route 21, Interstate 78, and Interstate 95 is known as the Newark Airport Interchange. The good news for visitors is that Newark Liberty International Airport's road access is centered around an elevated loop system that funnels drop-off/pick-up traffic for each of the terminals, meaning that if you happen to miss your terminal's exit you can loop back round again without getting lost! The excellent AirTrain Newark monorail system connects the terminals with Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station and several regional rail hubs such as Newark Penn Station, Secaucus Junction and New York Penn Station where transfers are available to any rail line in northern New Jersey or Long Island. Local buses also operate Downtown Newark and Newark Penn Station where connections are available to the PATH and NJ Transit railway lines. Olympia Trails operate express buses to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.

    Parking Tips

Parking your car rental at Newark Airport and other parts of the Big Apple is a breeze compared with many other large cities around the world, although some parts of NYC can be expensive, such as Manhattan. Available on-street parking spaces are much in demand during the week but less so on weekends. Many large car parks are located near some of the city's key tourist attractions (namely the Battery Parking Garage in Lower Manhattan, Manhattan Plaza Parking in Midtown Manhattan and the public parking garage underneath the MET museum) so try to locate those before heading into the centre. Be aware that few hotels in the city centre offer garage parking and when searching for street parking it's always best to check the local road signs in the case of any restrictions that might apply to the street you're intending to park in. Despite being in the digital age, it's still a good idea to keep some coins with you because not all parking meters in New York work with apps or accept credit cards. A good tip for parking on Staten Island (to visit the Statue of Liberty) is to park near the ferry terminal and use the ferry service to get there, which will save you time and money. As New York is such a large and potentially confusing city to navigate by car, another strong recommendation is to pay a bit extra for a GPS device at the time of making your booking. Additionally, Newark Liberty International Airport offers a choice of daily parking possibilities, with a variety of payment methods available. It's also worth keeping in mind that several parking spaces for customers with restricted mobility are located in each car park near the main terminal entrances.
