Newark Liberty International Airport serves the US state of New Jersey and is a major airport in the New York City metropolitan area. It is considered the second busiest airport in the world for passenger handling and was the first major US airport. The airport itself opened in October 1928 but it wasn't until the 1970s that it saw expansion. With the opening of two terminals in 1973 and later an additional terminal in 1988, Newark Airport has more than sealed its importance in US aviation history.
